Committed to a process of proactive hoarding,
the museum’s management tracks down
the items that it hopes will one day enrich the
collection. It is not permitted to sell its items,
but it can exchange those for which it has
more than one example. It is also at liberty
to buy using donations from private foundations
such as the A.P. Møller Foundation,
Denmark’s foremost foundation, created
by A. P. Møller, the founder and fi rst president
of the Maersk Group, known amongst other
things as one of the world’s largest maritime
container transporters. The museum also
benefi ts from the fi nancial support of
the Banedanmark, the public company with
responsibility for Denmark’s rail network.
Open to the world
An active member of the International
Association of Transport and Communication
Museums (IATM) – of which Poul Thestrup
is the treasurer – the Danish Railways
Museum regularly undertakes a tour of its
equivalents around the world, to exchange
experiences and to be inspired by their ideas.
“For instance,” he underlines, “the directors
of the Danish, Swedish, Norwegian
and Finnish railway museums have adopted
the habit of meeting once a year in one
of the Scandinavian capitals to work together
as closely as possible.” There is absolutely
no doubt that new space will be needed
to house the projects of the Odense museum!
