In the opening decade of this century a new
Morocco emerged. Behind the magnifi cent
palaces, the abandoned desert ksars and
the lively souks in medinas, a modern country
began to face Europe. King Mohammed VI,
after acceding to the throne in 1999,
encouraged the country’s modernisation.
The economy has seen a period of constant
growth (averaging + 5% per year) and has
hardly been affected by the recent worldwide
economic crisis. The State is attempting
to reinforce the three pillars of the economy:
agriculture, industry and services, in particular
tourism. It has several objectives: improving
the integration of the regions of Tangiers,
in the north, and Marrakech, in the south,
until now too isolated from Rabat and
Casablanca, reinforcing infrastructure
Rabat
Ouarzazate
to favour sustainable development and above
all attracting tourists and foreign capital,
essential to the country’s future. The deep
water container and passenger port of Tanger
Méditerranée, located 14 kilometres from
Kenitra
Spain, entered service in 2007. The same
hub serving all of West Africa, was built.
The Mediterranean bypass connecting
Tangiers to Saidia is being completed.
The motorway from Marrakech to Agadir
opened in June 2010. Work on the express
way between El Jadida and Essaouira
has begun. In the last few years there
has been an entire series of inaugurations.
The ports of Nador and Safi are being
developed and fourteen regional airports
renovated. Throughout the territory,
cranes, cement mixers and bulldozers
are busy constructing new towns, structural
networks and tourist centres.
The role of rail, in this context, will be decisive.
Led by the Minister of Equipment and
Transport and the new ONCF management
team (ref. box opposite), the public authorities
are investing heavily in a programme
to modernise infrastructure and signalling.
