White Fragility I’ve been hearing a deafening noise in the silence of the white collective ... Talking about racism makes white people uncomfortable. It triggers defensive actions, feelings + behaviours such as anger, fear + silence. Professor + author Robin D’Angelo calls this defensiveness when white people are challenged to break their silence, White Fragility. (see her book of the same name.) And im not talking about the white voices that are making themselves the centre of the narrative. White Saviours + Virtue Signallers might think they mean well but if you are at the centre of your conversation or action then its still behaviours rooted in privilege, bias + cultural hereditary. By not speaking up + sharing the responsibility of the issue it puts the burden on people of colour + discounts what they have to say. “It’s no longer on us to change things, it’s on the majority. It is that privileged voice that can extend their platform + share their spaces + resources + create opportunity for people + amplify issues in ways people of colour have not been given the opportunity to.
