Hello Readers...

Welcome to Essentially Local’s July-August Edition

It’s been a tough old few weeks for us small businesses. While it’s great to

see inklings of things slowly picking up, it’s going to take time.

essentiallylocal

Effect on Small Business Owners

Government schemes and grants have offered lifelines to small

businesses and self-employed. They’ve prevented businesses with

premises from going under, sadly though, some have closed their doors

for good. Unfortunately, additional funds do not cover the day-to-day

costs for most.

During the crisis, residents up and down the country turned to small

businesses now the essential message is:

Keep supporting us local businesses - the crisis isn’t over for us all yet!

Lovely Stories

Local businesses have been incredibly kind - volunteering for the NHS,

supplying food to essential workers and generously putting right work

for residents who have been let down by other contractors (Francis Rose).

Residents have enjoyed more local produce than ever - some businesses

even selling out! There have been hair-cutting tutorials. We’ve seen

innovative online Zoom classes from our fitness, (Happy Bodies) ballet

and performing arts (Rosemary Lane School of Ballet and True Colours)

and language businesses (Alliance Française).

Nearly every one of the small businesses also report positive impacts -

particularly doing more with precious family time. Long may it last.

We loved beautiful skies

at night with the best

Super Moons ever, along

with growing tomatoes

and cooking!

Schools

We owe thanks to the school teachers and assistants who continued

to work and support our home-schooling efforts. The juggle for small

business owners is not easy but we manage. My brain is bursting with

new and forgotten knowledge – English, maths and even some very

relevant psychology theories on social influencing!

The social isolation has affected youngsters and their carers; let’s hope

their mental well-being recovers very quickly.

What We’ve Been Up To

I’ve made the most of my daily hour of exercise - walking, running and

cycling. I loved my back garden tent holiday, growing veg, sewing and

cooking. The night sky has been captivating with the biggest Super

Moons, Lyrid Meteor Shower and Elon Musk’s Satellites and SpaceX

Starship. The gorgeous weather also eased the pain and I will now always

appreciate where we live and the time spent dedicated to doing these

things.

I hope you enjoy this edition - Emma

Feature

Cats in Need, Care in Deed

RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks have so

many lovely adult cats looking for new homes at

this time of year.

With so many kittens available they often get

overlooked. These felines also deserve a second

chance in life, where they’ll be loved and cared for

properly.

All adult cats are neutered, microchipped, vaccinated

and treated for fleas and worms and you can opt in

for four weeks’ free insurance from Petplan. They ask

for a minimum donation of £80 for each cat to help

cover costs. If you would like to adopt a kitten or a

cat or rabbit or small mammal, please complete the

adoption form found on their website.

A selection of them can be found on the local RSPCA

website.

Accessing The Vet Centre

The Vet Centre is currently open during weekdays from

9am-1.30pm and their DIY dog wash at the entrance of

Cherry Lane clinic is available during the garden centre

opening hours. Whether a registered client or not, use

it unless you have any COVID-19 symptoms. It’s only £8

a cycle, simple to use and be sure to use 30 seconds to

carry out a quick disinfect cycle and thoroughly rinse the

machine before the next dog and human. Keep an eye on

Facebook for the full reopening timetable.

Getting Ticked Off

If you enjoy long walks in the countryside you may have

brought home more friends than just your dog. Ticks tend

to latch onto dogs and cats, commonly around the face,

neck and ears. Helen Wigley, Head Nurse, The Vet Centre,

says, “If the ticks are removed incorrectly, it can lead to

minor skin infections that have to be treated. Pets can also

catch more serious diseases such as Lyme disease so it’s

best to use effective preventative treatment.”

Book in to see one of the Maids Moreton or Cherry Lane

nurses to discuss preventative treatments for ticks, fleas &

worms. Remember fleas will enjoy your central heating in

the autumn - get them before they set up home!

Protect Your Pet

Protect your dog from the harsh UV rays of

the summer sun, when you’re at the beach

or enjoying outdoor activities. Canines are

susceptible to painful burns and potential skin

cancer and cats with white and light-coloured

ears are also at risk.

Avoid going for walks during the middle of hot

days and test the temperature of the paths you

are walking on. Hot roads and paths can burn

paws, especially if it's too hot for your own feet.

Walk in the shade or carry your dog if you need to

cross hot paths and roads.

Well-Being

Nothing's Going to Stop Her

If you need inspiration to lose weight and get fit, Jane Hammonds owner of local

Slimming World franchise helped her members to receive nearly 500 awards for

weight loss and exercise during lockdown. She supports people keen to address

their weight issues with her popular zoom sessions with the most successful

members attending weekly - showing the importance of regular contact with

Jane.

This year, her own personal mission included 12 marathons to raise money

for Alzheimer’s Research. The marathons might not be happening but she’s

still on the move. On 4 July she’ll walk the 100km MK Boundary instead of the

100km Race to the Stones run, I’m not sure which is preferable!! Sponsor a

kilometre for £5 and a memory stone will be placed at that point.

Stay Safe, Stay Active and Look Out

for Others

Coronavirus has had both a positive and negative impact on physical and

mental health. Restrictions are lifting but we have to stay aware.

WORK LIFE BALANCE

Establishing a better work-life balance has

become a priority for many families who’ve

enjoyed this unique opportunity of enforced

quality time. Technology has also helped to

improve connections with wider family members

and new skills have been learnt. Simple pleasures

like family walks, bike rides, crafts and playing

games are becoming more important.

As we return to normality let’s not fall back into

old habits.

STAYING ACTIVE

Adults discovered a love of walking

and cycling but for others physical

activity fell and weight was gained.

Socio-economic group, age, ethnicity

and gender played a big part in levels of

activity during lockdown.

TOP TIP

Exercise brings many

benefits to physical

and mental health

and wellbeing.

Get active.

FEAR OF WORK

Many workers are fearful of

returning to the office due

to infection risk and being

able to juggle work and

home schooling. Employers

need to provide adequate

support to prevent stress

and mental health having a

negative impact on work.

THINK ABOUT OTHERS

The NSPCC reported a dramatic spike in demand

for services during lockdown with calls for

physical, sexual or emotional abuse or neglect.

Many others did not seek medical help for strokes,

heart attacks or cancer symptoms. Experts believe

it could take years to redress this balance. Look

out for your neighbours and friends.

CHANGED SOCIAL

INTERACTION

Psychologists have

identified a new

phenomenon ‘video

call fatigue’. Zoom,

Skype, Houseparty

and Google Meet

rose from 10 million

daily participants in

December to more than

200 million in March.

Many participants can’t

relax and more are

feeling worn out and

overly self-conscious

of performing for the

camera. In reality we

miss real people despite

the benefits of virtual

communication.

SOCIAL DISTANCING

Local health, wellbeing and leisure businesses continue to be

restricted due to the nature of their work. They can only carry

out some elements of their work and they have provided

excellent online instructions and reviews. This takes more

time, planning and effort than normal meetings, although

may seem easier. Please continue to support and use our

amazing local businesses. Look out for updates on social

media for easing of the restrictions.

Healthy Eating and Drinking

During Restrictions

As supermarkets ran out of stock and people feared going in, residents

turned to local food and drink producers. In fact, many suppliers were

overwhelmed and eventually even they were unable to meet the demand.

Others adapted what they made and the way they made it. We have some

great local produce and need to keep buying and using it.

OIL USE THIS LOCAL ONE!

The Fruity Farmer’s cold-pressed rapeseed

oil proved particularly exciting for us

during lock-down. We found many culinary

uses - salad dressings, breads and possibly

our favourite was chocolate and hazelnut

spread! The oil offers perfect consistency

and taste.

Once again, the Fruity Farmer has returned

to farmer’s markets for you to buy the

oil, their gins and liqueurs. Celebrate

with friends by popping a drop of their

strawberry gin into a glass of Prosecco.

Alternatively, slip into thoughts of

the serene Italian Lakes when sipping

Limoncello in the summer sun. The oil is

also on sale in local shops – Castlethorpe

COVID19 has not stopped the fantastic Bucks Star Beer brewing

upturn in their home delivery service locally and demand for their

open, they implemented safety measures at their new venture

The Brewery Tap House. They celebrated their first customers, on

June 13, who came to Growler Swap their purchases. Choose from

the full range of flavours and styles of beer - pale ale, Belgium

Westbury Arts Centre Awarded Grant

Westbury Arts Centre (WAC) have successfully won their bid

for funds to help them survive the crisis caused by Covid-19

and the lockdown.

Eighteen artists, ArtistsCollective@Westbury, lost their

working home and income from selling art, leading

workshops, exhibitions while WAC’s income from rental

and public events completely stopped too. The Board at

WAC applied for the Emergency Response Funds run by

Arts Council England (ACE), (administered on behalf of the

National Lottery) to ensure their survival.

They’ll now be able to:

• Keep providing artists with individual studios for work

• Support artists in maintaining community outreach

• Allow WAC and the ArtistsCollective@Westbury to create

and develop new means of bringing art and creativity to our

local community in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas.

They will seize the opportunity to widen support of artists

and the wider community in artistic creativity of all kinds

from Westbury.

Wishing everyone involved the best of luck.

Take a look at owner Peter Corrigan and friends’

Tom Maxwell is celebrating 5 years of improving the gardens for

customers in Milton Keynes and the surrounding villages. From

hedge-trimming, turfing, lawn mowing and lawn treatments in

summer, to cleaning patios, fencing and hard landscaping in the

winter, Tom loves his work. He also loves working outside, whatever

the weather, because of the customers and variety it offers.

However, when not in a garden, Tom makes noise! You may even

have seen him playing drums or his squeeze box in a show or festival

in Milton Keynes, within the UK and even further afield. And to relax,

Tom runs, recently completing his 10th half marathon.

Support Small Local Businesses

Small and medium-sized businesses account for about 90% of all UK businesses and sadly, COVID-19

has had a major impact on our sustainability. It’s thought that up to a third of small businesses may not

survive the crisis, in spite of government financial support. This could be catastrophic.

Thousands more UK businesses collapsed in the last few months this year than last, impacting new as well

as long standing companies. The transport sector was one of the hardest hit which could affect holidays and

school transport.

Proposed loans have been difficult for business owners to organise because of lack of resources and eligibility.

Interest rates were often excessively high, took weeks to come through and if the company made a loss in 2019

but were profitable this year they could not apply for a loan. Personal guarantees were also required, making the

decision to apply for a loan harder.

Grants were available for businesses with premises but not if located in serviced offices or working from home

and depended on the profits over the past three years, further restricting applications. The furlough scheme

paid staff salaries in small limited companies but not their day-to-day expenses. Employees could not carry

out income generating work when on furlough. Some self-employed received furlough payments and could

continue to work, others received nothing. Deferral of VAT and some taxes has helped in the short term but

these will still need to be paid.

Residents, more than ever, need to pull together and support the growing community of small local businesses,

for the economy to survive.

Family Impact From Lockdown

While for some lock-down has offered some very special

and dedicated family time. For others increased time spent

together and financial worries has led to a 40% surge in divorce

enquiries. Generous divorce settlements are being challenged

due to the downturn in the stock market, wiping thousands off

investments and leaving individuals feeling that maintenance

payments are no longer affordable. Financial crisis is not

considered unforeseeable or unforeseen; therefore it will be

interesting to see which direction appeals will go. The advice is

not to cut any maintenance payments without consultation.

Phone calls and requests for online help to the National

Domestic Abuse rose by a shocking 66% during lock-down.

Social isolation, household tensions and restrictions were

potentially contributing factors to the increase. Abuse from

children towards parents also increased. A lack of escape routes

made this harder for victims. If you need help due to an abusive

relationship call

Excitement is rising as the first ever radio station

surrounding villages hit the airwaves this May. The new

station was launched by professional radio host and

DJ, James Tully. Despite being in full restriction mode,

James saw this as perfect opportunity to support our

residential, volunteering and business communities

with music and talk. He’s now teamed up with

Essentially Local to help promote all things local.

The aim is that there will be something for everyone –

young to the more senior, with slots music of different

genres as well as talking. So far, James offers Theme

Wednesdays, Request Fridays and Chilled Saturday

mornings. If you prefer more soulful house and jazzy

beats listen into Ali’s Picks every Thursday from 7-9pm.

The younger audience will love what up and coming

starting soon.

Flowers Bring Happiness and Hope

As daffodils began to bloom and tulips were opening along

with other beautiful locally grown flowers, COVID-19 took

hold. The shocked Branch-Out MK CIC team were terrified as

weddings were postponed, talks cancelled and their shop

closed its doors. Staff were furloughed leaving service-users

isolated and in lockdown.

Then Billy, desperate to see something positive, ordered 15

Rainbow Posies and took them to Milton Keynes University

Hospital while his daughters made signs for NHS staff to pick

the posies. A ‘Nominate and Donate Scheme’ began – keeping

Branch-Out in business, flowers from going to waste and

importantly 250 key worked received beautiful rainbow posies.

Director Theresa Wedderburn, her husband and teenage

children worked tirelessly on the flower plot with orders and

deliveries, yet sadly, they may be facing another potential

catastrophe. The local council, along with many others all over

the country, are withdrawing all day service provider care

support funding from 1 July leaving their gardeners unable

to access their essential day care. This is due to a change in

leglislation that reduces the responsibility of local authorities

to provide care for vulnerable adults. We cannot allow this

to happen, please give your support to Community Interest

Cloudy2Clear, A Local

Service With A Smile.

I think we can all agree that the sooner

we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful

corona virus the better. That said, there

are also some heart warming positives

that we can take out of this situation.

It has often been said that we can only

really get to know one another and realise

what is truly important in times of crisis.

I think few would argue that in this case

what has proven to be important is local

community spirit.

All C2C

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear

these values have been held dear for a number

of years. Since starting the business some years

ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their

core values of supporting the local community

by providing a service that saves the public

money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the

“Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our

Getting the Job Done Well and Safely

To make our homes work better during lockdown we undertook more previously avoided home

improvement jobs than ever before! The home office and organising usable space became a

priority. In fact Aviva found 85% of homeowner undertook some kind of home improvement.

WHEN NOT TO DIY

As restrictions ease, it may be time to call in local

professionals. Confused.com discovered 47% us doing

DIY had a mishap. DIYers have burst water pipes,

knocked holes in walls, doors or floors, fallen off ladders

and with one in ten electrocuting themselves, DIY may

not be as easy as it seems! Some DIY jobs could even

void your insurance. Think carefully, check your tools,

plans and skills before you start!

LOCAL GARDEN COMPANIES TO THE RESCUE

Three local garden companies came to the rescue of community nurse,

Laura Kirkman, when a rogue landscaper conned her.

Laura paid the landscaper £3,000 for materials to build her dream garden,

but he vanished without starting the job.

When Danny Prestedge, Director of Francis Rose Landscapes, spotted her

warnings on social media, he along with Golden Gardens and Buildings

and GC Landscapes gave Laura the garden she deserved – for free.

He said, "The NHS staff work so hard. The last person you want to be doing

anything like that to is an NHS worker. As soon as I heard about it I thought

let’s see what we can do."

Other businesses also contributed generously to the £15,000 project,

including Cranfield Haulage, Dudley Plant Hire, Elphick Electrical, Bletchley

Turf, Darren Wright and Bedford Rockery.

Laura is delighted with her garden and said, “They are

amazing, they've all been lovely and polite. NHS, nurses,

doctors, key workers may be their heroes but they're my

heroes.”

SMALL BUSINESSES APPRECIATE

THE SUPPORT

GreenThumb Milton Keynes want to say a

big thank you to all their supportive and

appreciative customers who have

continued to use their services throughout

lockdown. While things may be different,

small talk reduced, as always they strive to

create the best possible lawn as efficiently

and considerately as possible and in

partnership with their customers. They’ll

continue to practice all the measures

essential to keep you and their staff safe.

Thank you to GreenThumb too!

Back to

Business

Bright & Beautiful have

additional procedures to

protect and keep you safe while

providing their sparkling service.

Training Teams – Housekeepers

understand corona symptoms and

self-isolating guidelines. They’ll

rearrange your visit if anyone your

household has symptoms before

a clean and if isolating they’ll

try their best to help with your

shopping or prescriptions.

Staggered Start Times – They’ll

give you an estimated arrival

window the day before visiting

and tell you about changes.

Hygiene – They disinfect

equipment between visits and

use different cloths and mop

heads for each household.

Housekeepers use a hand sanitiser

before entering your house and

thoroughly wash their hands

during your clean, even bringing

their own soap!

Disinfectants – Their disinfectants

remove bacteria and viruses,

including Covid-19, to a safe level,

with a higher concentrate for high

touch areas. When they leave

they’ll disinfect your door handles

and light switches.

Contact during a Clean – They

ask that you go out or isolate

and they’ll aim to keep the 2m

social distancing. Someone is

always available if you need to

update your schedule, give special

instructions or feedback.

Keeping Our Area Looking Beautiful

Volunteers and local businesses have not stopped in the mission to work together and keep

the area looking fantastic. Green Thumb have continued to treat the lawns and grassed areas

in Stony Stratford while Axiom B help out in Wolverton.

SUNFLOWERS FOR ALL

Children planted sunflower seeds donated by

the RHS and Odells, and gave fantastic feedback.

Older residents enjoyed blooms of sunflowers

grown by SSIB Volunteers - a great idea from

Clare George.

VEGETABLES FOR THE FOOD BANK

SSIB used the community gardens to grow

vegetables for the local Food Bank (with

York House Trustees support). They weeded,

planted, and nurtured beans, lettuce, tomatoes,

courgettes and more, to be rewarded with

lovely produce. Bianca Bendig-Ceesay, Chair

of the Fullers Slade IYN, distributed rhubarb,

lettuce and new potatoes. Andy and Debbie

from the Kings Food Bank in Wolverton shared

more fresh food supplies.

BRINGING SOME

CHEER TO STONY

STRATFORD DURING

LOCKDOWN

Stony Stratford in Bloom

(SSIB) achieved their aim

of bringing cheer to the

town during lockdown with

perfect social distancing.

KEEP ON BLOOMING

SSIB and the Town Council selected

drought-resistant geraniums for the

planters. Pat Kyd organised the plants

while volunteers took charge of planting

and watering. They continued to weed

perennial beds as volunteers increased

including younger members like the

Shaw family who contributed hugely.

STAY IN TOUCH

A Facebook Page virtual plant sale raised funds shared by SSIB

and the Food Bank.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Residents are needed to look after flower

beds at Greenleys Croft car park entrances

in the same excellent way as at Bounds

Croft. Greenleys Community Garden also

needs helpers to keep it tidy.

Thanks to residents for watering doorstep

and dustbin planters, pulling weeds and

dead-heading flowers around the area.

This effort keeps the area looking great and

encourages more blooms!

Get in touch with the Town Council to help

and enjoy coffee breaks at BarBar’s, the

North Western, Gordano’s and other local

cafes.

WOLVERTON AND GREENLEYS IN BLOOM

Bulbs and flowers provide their usual great show. The daffodils,

courtesy of Tesco, produced beautiful floral displays around the street

signs in Wolverton and Greenleys.

Keep on

Growing

If you’ve discovered a love of

growing your own don’t stop

now. You can sow your seeds over

the summer for use later in the

autumn and winter.

Carrots – Sow seeds in June/early

July to enjoy this winter without the

risks of them being destroyed by

carrot fly.

French beans, beetroot and

spinach – Sow in July and they’ll

happily grow to bring your more

winter produce. The beans and

beetroot can even be grown

amongst your flowers.

Kale – A hardy veg, meaning it’s

happy in the winter soils and the

leaves will feed a hungry family.

Potatoes – Add about 10cm

compost to a container about 30cm

by 30cm with drainage holes, pop

1-3 potato tubers into it and then

cover with about 15cm of compost.

As leaves appear, cover with more

compost until the container is almost

full. Water and use a general-purpose

fertiliser. Prevent frost damage by

covering with fleece. As the foliage

dies back in late autumn remove it

and leave the potatoes in the pot

until needed at Christmas.

Pressure to plant has reduced for the six In-Bloom volunteers as RHS

judging is off. They’re re-siting flower baskets where some lamp-posts

can no longer take the weight and contractors, Axiom B are helping

with summer bedding plants.

Pre-lockdown the team along with Ash and Alec, the Town Council’s

invaluable caretakers, cut back and removed overgrown shrubs and

weeds in the raised beds in Oxford and Bedford Streets. Householders

planted new perennials.

Flower planters, shaped as two engines with three carriages, are

being placed at Wolverton station, West Midlands Trains funded

the work. Regular commuters can help by pulling out weeds and

deadheading.

Motoring

Essential Driving Only

According to the British Lung Foundation, as air

pollution decreased during lockdown, one in six U.K.

residents with lung conditions

reported improved symptoms.

Higher air pollution levels are

already known to damage to your

heart and lungs. Now, it’s been

found prolonged exposure to toxic

air also contributed to the greater

numbers of cases and deaths from

Corona.

The Corona pollution holiday shows how much cars and

industry contribute to air pollution - nitrogen dioxide

levels in the air dropping by an average 50% as fewer

cars were driven. It’s now estimated that 1.3 million fewer

working days will be lost to respiratory illnesses, there’ll be

6,000 fewer new cases of asthma in children and almost

2,000 avoided emergency hospital visits due to asthma

attacks. Health and fitness

also improved as more people

cycled, jogged and walked.

Wildlife also thrived.

So if road transport is one ofthe

main causes of air pollution and

if as the AA report people in the

UK want to drive less and cycle

more, let’s take action. Most trips

are local and most of us could

cycle or walk them in as little as

10 minutes. If cities like Milan,

Brussels and Paris can prioritise

walkers and cyclists we can do

more. It’s not about giving up

our cars but about changingthe

way we use them so thatwe

don’t lose the benefits to our

health, economy and life that we

have created.

Green & Clean

up Your Car

1. Reduce your car usage - aim to work

from home more regularly or walk/cycle

to the local shop – save time, fuel and

particulates from tyres and get fitter.

2. Make your new car electric – see FSG’s

special offer on charging points.

3. Prolong the life and performance of your

car - service regularly; replace spark plugs

and high-tension leads. Regularly check

engine oil, coolant reserve and windscreen

washer. Drive occasionally, at least once

a week in winter, to maintain your car’s

battery. Occasionally rev your warmed

engine to reduce build-up of carbon

deposits to improve efficiency.

4. Improve fuel economy, reduce wear and

particulate loss - drive more smoothly and

keep the weight down. Leave your air-con

off to save fuel but use occasionally to

reduce refrigerant gas leak.

5. Check tyres for correct alignment and

pressure to improve fuel economy and

handling. Swap tyres around to prolong

tyre life.
