film franchise is too strong a beast for 

any studio to ignore.

Big summer blockbusters 

are the very backbone of 

Hollywood. The studios will save 

their biggest and best fi lms for this 

hugely competitive period of time, 

each hoping to be in possession 

of that season’s golden nugget. As 

such, it is understandable that when 

the studios strike upon a sure-fi re 

hit, they stretch out the success 

and buzz for as long as possible. 

It is in this way that franchises 

are born. Often gathering a cult 

following, these multi-million dollar 

blockbusters are a studio’s dream 

come true. Once a franchise is 

followed slavishly, the buzz created 

amongst fans and fi lmgoers 

guarantees a healthy return. Two 

such franchises that have worked 

hard for their buzz are the Pirates of 

the Caribbean and X-Men collections. 

Pirates of the Caribbean fi rst hit 

the screens in 2003, as a fantasyadventure 

fi lm based loosely on a 

Walt Disney theme park ride. With 

a strong trio of leads, including 

Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly and 

Johnny Depp, the original fi lm The 

Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003) was a 

surprise smash hit. Fun, exciting and 

lighthearted, it was here that the 

world was fi rst introduced to Johnny 

Depp in a pirate’s hat and eyeliner. 

Three years later, Disney produced 

a somewhat darker follow-up fi lm 

Dead Man’s Chest (2006), and then 

again with At World’s End in 2007. The 

fi lms continued to smash records at 

the box offi ce and racked up nearly 

$2 billion in combined box offi ce 

revenue, putting some seriously 

big smiles on the faces of studio 

executives. 

At the risk of franchise fatigue, 

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger 

Tides was released this year. It was a 

risk that paid off, reinvigorating the 

movie franchise back to a simple, 

carefree summer success. With a 

few changes to the line-up and the 

introduction of a variety of fantasy 

staple characters (think mermaids 

and zombies), the well-loved series 

was given a fresh update. The true 

drawcard for each of the Pirates 

fi lms has undeniably been Johnny 

Depp’s turn as the loveable Captain 

Jack Sparrow. Each time, he delivers 

a reliably memorable performance, 

creating humour and seriousness 

in equal measure. From the very 

fi rst scenes, with Sparrow leading 

a great escape through the streets 

of Old London Town, his steadily 

entertaining act is what keeps the 

fans coming back for more. 

The X-Men series is another popular 

franchise that has spawned several 

successful fi lms. Based on a Marvel 

Comics strip of the same name, 

this is a superhero franchise that 

stressed character personalities as 

much as action and adventure. The 

fi rst fi lm had a star cast, playing the 

likes of Wolverine, Professor Xavier 

and Magneto. These characters are 

all “mutants”, possessing strange 

powers and abilities. In the mutant 

community, a war is raging between 

two opposing views. Professor 

Xavier and his X-Men believe that 

humanity and mutants can coexist 

in harmony, while Magneto and the 

Brotherhood of Mutants believe a 

war between the two is imminent 

and intend to fi ght. 

From the very fi rst X-Men fi lm 

in 2000, the series experienced a 

brilliant reception from comic fans 

and regular fi lmgoers alike. It was no 

surprise when the studio followed 

it up with X2 (2003), X-Men: The 

Last Stand (2006) and X-Men Origins: 

Wolverine (2009). Each fi lmed outgrossed 

its predecessor, and saw an 

infl ux of superhero-style fi lms being 

developed throughout the 2000s. 

Ensuring the series does not slow 

down, the most recent X-Men fi lm 

X-Men: First Class (2011) works as a 

prequel, delving into the complex 

history between Professor X and 

Magneto. Once best friends and 

now arch enemies, this fi lm looks 

at how their friendship developed 

as they trained a band of young 

mutants to fi ght a fi endish Nazi 

doctor, only to crumple in a tale of 

revenge and redemption. With the 

added complications of a Cold War/ 

CIA setting, this is an immensely 

complex story that never once 

loses momentum. 

Judging by the success of both the 

latest Pirates and X-Men fl icks, there 

may be even more instalments to 

come. The beauty and the allure of a 

successful fi lm franchise is too strong 

a beast for any studio to ignore. Even 

with the risk of a lacklustre sequel, 

the inherent appeal of a solidly-built 

franchise means that fans will always 

come back for more.

the camera sweeps over a uniquely 

Parisian landscape. Ambling over 

rooftops and down through 

serpentine alleys, the camera settles 

on famous landmarks such as the 

Louvre and the Champs-Élysées. 

This sequence makes one things 

very clear: the focus of this fi lm is 

Paris. So what does his new fi lm 

Midnight in Paris (2011) mean for 

Woody Allen and his long time love 

and home city, Manhattan? Is the 

romance over? 

The iconic director, admired and 

revered around the world is as 

synonymous with Manhattan as 

yellow cabs and giant slices of pizza. 

Both considered American treasures, 

connecting them is as natural a 

pairing as salt and pepper: each can 

exist alone but the combination

thrilling (and delicious!). Some of his 

most well-known work, including 

Manhattan (1979), Annie Hall (1977), 

and Hannah And Her Sisters (1986) 

were all fi lmed on the streets of 

the city he once declared to be his 

biggest inspiration. 

Departing from the streets of 

downtown Manhattan, the entire 

production reads like a love letter 

to the City of Light. Part fairytale, 

it follows a dissatisfi ed American 

screenwriter Gil who is holidaying 

with his typical-American-tourist 

fi ancée Inez. Gil is a nostalgic, 

viewing the streets of Paris as a map 

to the Golden Years of past, when 

great artists and writers of the 1920s 

rubbed shoulders in the plenty, 

spouting ideas and philosophizing on 

the meaning of life. Low and behold, 

one night when Gil is wandering the 

streets on his lonesome he stumbles 

into the Paris of his imagination, 

infused with magic and tinged with 

a heavy air of hope. In this Paris he 

meets a run of his literary heroes, 

from from Ernest Hemingway to 

F. Scott Fitzgerald, and artists such as 

Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. Gil 

is swept along, totally succumbing to 

the enticements of the glowing coals 

of nostalgia. 

From its rapturous opening 

sequence to the neat and pleasing 

ending, this fi lm is classic Woody 

Allen. He showers nothing but 

praise onto Paris, from its impressive 

history, to the beautiful architecture 

and even more beautiful women. 

It would appear that his creative 

skills can blossom very comfortably 

outside of his Manhattan shell, and 

his new admiration for Europe may 

not be a bad thing after all.

have come from a school game 

played in England in the early 

19th century and since that time 

numerous international stars have 

carried the oval ball. One of the 

most historic matches ever played 

was said to have occurred in 1905 

between Wales and New Zealand. 

Game of the Century looks back at 

the monumental game that caused 

so much post-match controversy, 

that it is still discussed today. The 

two previously unbeaten teams had 

never met before their memorable 

match and arguments still rage today 

over the ‘try that never was’ and 

Wales’ narrow victory. 

Less controversial but still enthralling 

was the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

Whilst well loved across the world, Coldplay have often been criticised 

for being formulaic.

When the world fi rst heard Chris 

Martin’s fragile, soaring vocals 

on their fi rst hit single ‘Yellow’, it 

was mesmerized. Melancholy, selfdeprecating 

and intense, Martin, 

the lead singer of internationally 

renowned band Coldplay, isn’t 

exactly your typical rock star. 

Despite being the reclusive pin-up 

boy for the anti-rock star attitude, 

it is this very quality that has in 

part ensured Coldplay’s success. 

At the time of the release of their 

debut album in 2000, the blissfully 

downcast Parachutes, the world had 

already learned to love the subtlety 

and scope of melancholy music 

with the incredible success of UK 

band Radiohead. Coldplay were 

quickly hailed by the industry, along 

with other similar bands like Travis 

and Muse, as “the new Radiohead”. 

Martin’s mournful and murmuring 

vocals may have sounded similar to 

Radiohead front-man Thom Yorke, 

but there were also infl ections of 

a clarity and empathy reminiscent 

of U2’s Bono. It was the addition 

of Martin’s own shy honesty to this 

mix that managed to set Coldplay 

apart. His quivering vocals were 

refreshingly unassuming. Martin’s 

voice, along with the insightful 

lyricism and ambient guitar 

textures were signature features of 

their unique sound. A sound that 

would, despite its intimate nature, 

appeal to the masses. 

While their debut did go multi- 

platinum in several countries 

and earned the band their fi rst 

Grammy for ‘Best Alternative 

Album’ (they beat out industry 

heavyweights like Radiohead and 

Bjork), this was really only the 

beginning for Coldplay. Throughout 

the noughties Coldplay’s record 

sales and public profi le continued 

to climb. In fact, since their debut 

release, Coldplay have sold in 

excess of 50 million records 

worldwide. This makes them one 

of the best-selling recording artists 

of all time, and in contemporary 

terms, one of the biggest bands still 

performing and releasing material. 

The Coldplay of 2011 looks and 

sounds a lot different to the 

group of uncertain musicians who 

fi rst emerged on the scene in 2000. 

That these changes have happened 

in gradual and organic fashion has 

meant the band hasn’t intimidated 

listeners with anything too bold 

or challenging. Instead, through 

gradual changes in their sound and 

creative approach they have been 

able to retain their fans throughout 

their career. 

A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), 

their sophomore effort, was in a 

similar vein to the group’s debut 

but it was subtly different. The lyrics 

and general sound of the album 

was more robust, and less overtly 

depressing than Parachutes, but still 

brimming with charming fragility. 

The band’s next album X&Y (2005) 

saw the band shift the focus of 

their song writing from introverted 

personal issues, to weightier, 

worldlier fare. Fragile ballads 

were replaced with widescreen 

soaring epics. 

Whilst well loved across the world, 

Coldplay have often been criticised 

for being formulaic. However, with 

their fourth release, Viva la Vida or 

Death and All His Friends, Coldplay 

proved they don’t always have to 

play it safe. Politically charged, and 

laden with elements appropriated 

from world music like tribal drums 

and Bollywood strings, this album 

is unashamedly experimental. 

Produced by Brian Eno, (guru to 

U2 and David Bowie), this release 

is more mature than their previous 

material, but it’s still classic 

Coldplay. With their fi fth album 

rumoured to be due in October 

this year, the world is waiting to 

see where the group will take 

things next. 

One thing is for certain - Chris 

Martin’s soaring vocals will send 

shivers down your spine as he 

once again turns the everyday into 

something simultaneously grand and 

fragile. Some things never change.

variety of entertainment available on your fl ight. See the handset 

illustration and key defi nitions to understand the specifi c functions 

of the control. You can access these keys at any time during the 

interactive screening. 

For further information on how to move through the interactive 

process, press the right arrow key on the Welcome screen and 

an instructional page will be displayed. To navigate through the 

entertainment options use the Up and Down keys and make your 

selection by pressing the Right arrow key. The Left arrow key will 

take you back to the previous level. 

If you need any help, please ask one of our cabin crew. 

Key Defi nitions 

LEFT: The Left arrow key takes the user back to the previous level. 

RIGHT: The Right arrow key is used to SELECT an option. 

UP: The Up arrow key takes the user to previous item/page. 

DOWN: The Down arrow key takes the user to the next 

item/page. 

SELECT: This button also performs the SELECT function. 

START: The button labeled START performs the SELECT 

function except in the case of media, where it directly launches 

the application. 

GREEN: This button performs the function of ‘Pause’ when in 

AVOD and takes the passenger directly to the Main menu 

when in the interactive mode. 

BLUE: This button performs the function of ‘Forward’ when

• Control buttons on the monitor can be used for the following: 

Adjust screen brightness to decrease.

The centre button should not be used. 

• The personal seat monitor should be kept stowed for taxi, 

take-off and landing.
