Vendors open at varying hours, but one thing you
can count on is the option to eat at any given
time. Street food vendors offer local favourites
like mandu gook (savoury dumpling soup),
kimbap (steam rice rolled in seaweed) and bindae
duk (mung-bean pancake). Just follow the crowd
to see the locals’ favourite hangout and you’ll
never go wrong.
Seoul’s edgy new culture scene is also worth
exploring. Nanta (Cookin’) is an embodiment of
Korea’s most sacred pastime, cooking, and its
emerging playfulness. It is also Seoul’s longestrunning
show and answer to Broadway, having
run for over a decade now. This theatrical, highoctane
pantomime succeeds in amusing audience
with its clever use of music derived from kitchen
utensils, martial arts and comedy in a skit that
takes place in, you guessed it – the kitchen. There
are lots of laughter and humour, and interactive
too, so watch out for fl ying food and more!
For somewhat of a gentler performance, the
Seoul Arts Center combines several theatres and
museums housed in a building that celebrates the
best of Korean architecture. Performances range
from classical music to Broadway-style musicals.
Those pressed for time can still catch various
events that are often provided free at the outdoor
spaces. The area also has many quiet nooks and
relaxing corners where you can enjoy pleasant
strolls amid Korean-style ponds and garden.
