Experience Matters
In most jobs, age and experience has its benefits, but for
Hollywood with its obsession with youth and beauty, many
brilliant performers find themselves on the outer once they reach a
certain age. During the black and white era getting older wasn’t the
cardinal sin it is for film stars today, receding hairlines were hidden
by hats, expanding waistlines masked by tailored suits, and make-up
and lighting was used to cover all manner of age-related issues. Now
when actors start to get a few wrinkles, they must make the decision
about whether to get plastic surgery, Botox or other treatments to
keep looking young, or risk being relegated to supporting roles or
worse still, cast aside never to be seen onscreen again. But it seems
that all the complaining about there not being enough good roles
for people over 40 has finally started to get results with ageing stars
appearing more frequently as the leads in some surprising new films.
IN THE
LIGHT LIMELIGHT
By Rachel Monk
Hollywood seems to have noticed that the world’s population is
ageing and that the baby boomers are a very large and significant
audience that are demanding quality films. In response, being 40
isn’t the death sentence it once was for an actor, but rather the
chance to play a different kind of character. Even last year’s Academy
Awards recognised two stars for their long and successful careers
as well as the brilliant performances they gave. Jeff Bridges won
the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Crazy Heart (2009),
while Sandra Bullock took the Best Actress award for The Blind Side
(2009). Playing someone different to the roles they are known for
managed to help these actors get the Oscar and win over critics
and audiences alike, proving that movie-goers are happy to see
their favourite film stars doing something new and different as they
get older. Of course it is still rare for a film to feature more than

one older lead actor, unless they happen to be playing parents
or grandparents. Two films out this year defy this stereotype,
featuring older stars in very active and unusual roles that in
the past would more than likely have had much younger actors
resulting in a very different kind of movie.
Action packed Red (2010) has an all-star cast, all of whom are
over 45, with even a couple who are eligible for retirement
benefits. Bruce Willis shows he still can be an action hero at
the age of 55, playing a retired CIA agent Frank Moses, who
recruits some of his old spy friends to help him get to the
bottom of a government conspiracy that is threatening his
life. Proving they are still dangerous despite their advanced
years, his friends include a machine gun toting Helen Mirren,
Morgan Freeman as a slightly depraved nursing home resident
and an ultra-paranoid unbalanced John Malkovich. Along with
Mary-Louise Parker as the bored pension office worker who
manages to get caught up in the drama, all of these actors
have been working in the industry for decades. Seeing senior
citizens take on a bunch of assassins is an amusing sight, but it
is a brilliant way to show that just because someone has gotten
older, it doesn’t mean they are incapable of doing things.
Another film that pushes the boundary for what is normal
behaviour for someone a bit older is Morning Glory (2010).
Starring Rachel McAdams as a young ambitious television
producer who scores a job on a failing morning program, she
sets about making it a success by bringing an experienced
news anchor onboard to co-host with an ageing beauty queen.
Featuring Harrison Ford as the world weary serious journalist
sixties, these Hollywood heavyweights prove that age doesn’t
matter when you are funny.
Some stars will always be able to get work no matter what
age they are, after proving themselves with a mix of success
and failures, actors like Willis, Mirren and Ford will no doubt
continue to draw a crowd on their name alone even as they get
older. As more stars reach their age bracket, hopefully there
will be more films that will benefit from their experience, and
the younger generation can see how it should and can be done
when you know what you are doing.
PROFILE PROFILE
Cee Lo Green
By Megan Gordon
Cee-Lo Green is cool. In fact, he’s cooler than owning an Apple product. Beyond the bling, the ‘Crazy’
voice and the aviators, there’s an effortlessly original kat. His new album The Lady Killer proves that.
As one of the best albums of 2010 Cee-Lo has
come in to his own as a solo artist. Before its release, he
was probably best known as one half of the dynamic and
idiosyncratic hip pop duo Gnarls Barkley. The pair made
music history with their debut album St. Elsewhere when
their huge hit ‘Crazy’ became the first single to reach
number one in the UK charts based purely on digital
downloads sales.
Prior to his Gnarls Barkley fame, not only was Cee-Lo
part of pioneering hip-hop group The Goodie Mob, he was
also a backup singer for TLC’s infamous number one single
“Waterfalls”, as well as writing and producing the hit “Don’t
Cha” for the Pussycat Dolls. But like his first two solo
albums Cee-Lo Green And His Perfect Imperfections (2002) and
…Is The Soul Machine (2004) Cee-Lo has largely remained in
the shadows. He was always a highly recognisable voice and
never a household name. And then, The Lady Killer landed
and changed everything.
Lady Killer is a clean, smooth and surprisingly modern release.
It represents Cee-Lo’s most focused solo work in over
20 years, which is perhaps key to his new found fame. He
manages on his new album, unlike so many other “modern”
soul artists, to sound contemporary, another key to his
success. His cool, mellow falsetto is equal parts Barry White
smooth and Sam Cooke croon, and the music itself is a swirl
of synth, motown and doo-wop.
There are horns and the odd staccato of gospel choir, but
unlike fellow soul singers like Daniel Merriweather and Amy
Winehouse he doesn’t rely too heavily on retro sounds.
Instead, his entire album is a blast of an eclectic mix of
sounds. There’s plenty of hand-jiving and booty shaking
horns, but the addition of swirling synths gives the album an
urban, modern edge.
Another thing that separates Cee Lo as a performer on
this record is his vocal treatment. Aside from being
incredibly buoyant, his voice is at once dextrous without
drawing unnecessary attention to itself. It’s so refreshing
to hear a soul singer who doesn’t engage in superfluous
vocal acrobatics.
The album blasts off in cinematic fashion with a short-lived
intro. ‘The Lady Killer Theme’ sounds something like a James
Bond opener crossed with a psychedelic romp and sets the
mood to off-kilter for an album packed with Barry White
and broken-hearts.
Album highlight, ‘Bright Lights Bigger City’ is a funky synth
heavy tune propelled by driving base and a euphoric chant
along chorus. What’s surprising here is that this tune didn’t
make the cut as the second single (the first and current
single being the wonderfully vitriolic ‘Forget You’). The
second single, ‘It’s Ok’, is an upbeat number filled with handclicks
and bright xylophone tweets. It’s a great track but it
lacks the chant-along quality of ‘Bright Lights’. On the whole
the album is an upbeat, accessible and smooth soul affair
that’ll have you doo-bopping along. In short, Cee-Lo is the
new soul.
O Allah! Make easy for us this journey
of ours, and roll up for the distance
thereof.
O Allah! Thou art our companion
in this journey and guardian in (our)
household.
O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee from
the toil of this journey, from beholding
a miserable sight, and on ill return, in
my wealth and household.
And may Allah grace be upon our
leader Prophet Muhammad and his
family and companions. And Praise be
to Allah, The Cherisher and Sustainer
of the Worlds.
Taylor Swift
She is cute, she is sweet, she is undeniably talented.
Strong and self assured, this starlet isn’t the type that will
become swept up in fame and glory, trashing her good looks
and talent like many young stars have before her. She is
country’s sweetheart. Her name isTaylor Swift.
Brought up in Pennsylvania, Taylor has described herself as
being the outsider at school. Being teased and bullied there,
though horrible, pushed Taylor to watch people at school
rather than participate. So she turned to writing as an outlet,
drawing on her own experiences and not holding back anything
of her thoughts. Taylor has become well known for her honest
writing and the use of real life situations and names in her
songs, in turn causing many fans and critics to look deeper into
them and research their origins.
One of these songs is from her second album, Fearless (2008).
‘Hey Stephen’ is said to be about a guy who opened some
shows for her and whom she had a crush on. Too shy to tell
him and with no need to, Taylor instead wrote a song about
him and released it for him to find out that way. It’s this
song and many others from her latest album Speak Now
that have garnered extra attention. ‘Innocent’ was one that
caught some major attention when Miss Swift performed
it at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Regarded as a
response to her being interrupted by Kanye West during
her acceptance speech the year before, although it seems
forgiving some of the lyrics have a subtle sting to them, a
‘Swift’ bite to show she’s no pushover.
Tune in and see if you can figure out who and what
she’s talking about on her new album Speak Now (2010) as
Taylor becomes a little less country and a little
more popular.
