Muhibah
Dear Guests,
Welcome aboard our aircraft.
In this Sep/Oct 2012 issue of Muhibah, we
would like to acknowledge Royal Brunei Airlines’
Corporate Services Department.
Amongst the many things that Head of Corporate
Services, Aji Puteh and his team do for the airline
and its employees are handling recruitment
and training, and The Cadet Pilot Scheme is an
important scheme under its purview. Royal Brunei
Airlines takes pride in recruiting the most talented
young Bruneians we can find to train as pilots.
The Cadet Pilot Scheme receives the full support
of His Majesty’s Government through the Ministry
of Education, and so far the scheme has to date
produced 109 successful pilots (30 Captains,
36 Senior First Officers and 25 First Officers).
For the future, Corporate Services Department is
implementing a new Human Resources Information
System (HRIS) to better manage data and analysis.
This is in line with the Company’s objective of
improving productivity and efficiency with the best
technology available in the workplace.
In this issue of Muhibah, we take a closer look at
the landscape of Scotland through the eyes of a
new animated film – Disney.Pixar’s Brave. The film
successfully brings to life the country’s imposing
Scottish Highlands, the magnificent standing stones
of Callanish, and its all-around majestic landscape.
Also, if you are looking for something more exotic,
look no further than Abu Dhabi in the United Arab
Emirates. From giant theme parks to extravagant
hotels, this modern city comes to life with an evergrowing
list of attractions.
For a family fun-filled getaway, Sentosa Island in
Singapore is home to an array of activities for
adults and kids. This year, Sentosa is celebrating
40 years by launching new child-friendly attractions
such as pirate ships and fun and games with foam
pools and sand pits.
Visitors can also discover a place of beauty and
tranquility in Yogyakarta which is located in
Central Java, Indonesia. This enchanting town is
surrounded by lush greenery and some of the most
stunning natural wonders in the region.
We also take a closer look at Thailand’s second
largest city, Chiang Mai, and highlight some of
the stunning cultural attractions the city has
to offer, such as rainforest tours, bargain-filled
shopping and boutique resorts.
In our home base of Brunei Darussalam, cyclists are
gearing up to be a part of the Butra Heidelberg Tour
de Brunei which will take place in September 2012.
Finally we are eagerly anticipating the upcoming
sixth edition of the Royal Trophy Golf Match
between Europe and Asia. This great event will
welcome world renowned golfers such as José
Maria Olazábal and Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki to Brunei
Darussalam on 14-16 December 2012.
Royal Brunei Airlines is the official airline sponsor
and already we’re selling holiday packages to eager
golf fans from around the world.
I sincerely hope you will enjoy this issue of Muhibah.
Thank you for flying Royal Brunei and we wish all of
our passengers a safe and pleasant journey.
With warm wishes,
Dermot Mannion
MuHIBAH
Like other listed UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the
world, Borobudur plays hot spot for the many tourists who
make their way to Yogyakarta in Central Java. In fact, this
monument remains one of Indonesia’s most visited spots, for both local and
overseas tourists. They mainly come here to walk amidst this great complex
for themselves while simultaneously discovering the landscape and beauty of
its surrounding areas.
With the steaming Mount Merapi in the background and its beautiful
architecture, Borobudur plays a wonderful picture-perfect host; but skip an
exploration of the surrounding villages and you’ll miss the opportunity to
discover an area filled with beauty and tranquility.
Yogyakarta is known today as the launching pad for visits to Borobudur;
but way before that, it served as a Dutch military post. Remains of its Dutch
colonial history can still be seen but elsewhere, the area is very much a laidback
and peaceful town. The lush greenery is often punctuated with typical villages.

Be enchanted with the tranquil lifestyle these villages have to offer
– even if you’re visiting just for a few hours. easy-going locals will no
doubt share a smile with you; they might even extend the hospitality
with a glass of cold tea or fresh young coconut, a perfect respite for
the hot weather here. look beyond and the beautiful scenery such as
that of padi fields with grazing cows will definitely take your mind off
from the stress you’ve come to get away from.
located some 116km away is the astonishing Dieng Plateau, where
beautiful natural wonders await. some refer to this as the strange
beauty of Java, mainly for its unique landscapes and surroundings.
Here, volcanic craters are a main attraction, namely the sikidang
Crater, which is located in a barren stretch of land surrounded by hills.
The smell of sulfur will hit you the minute you arrive, and it becomes
stronger the nearer you get.

Visitors often try to catch a
pre-dawn view of Borobudur.
Crater holes are everywhere, and in some
places even bubbling with water. sikidang
Crater is at the end of this area – a large pool
of water mixed with bubbling grey mud often
surrounded by a thick puffy white smoke. it is
interesting to note that ‘sikidang’ is taken from
the word ‘kidang’, a Javanese word that means
‘deer’. Why the moniker? a magma chamber
lies beneath this crater that, when enough heat
and energy is produced, eruptions ensue and
a new crater is formed! Hence, sikidang Crater
is always on the move, as if jumping as a deer
would to find a new location.
another icon not to be missed while in Dieng
Plateau? Definitely the spectacularly beautiful
Telaga Warna, or also known as The Colourful
lake; no doubt a name given because of its
calm and mysteriously enchanting crystal green
water that changes colour when exposed to
the sun, almost rainbow like. surrounded by
a row of hills and at an altitude of more than
2,000 metres above sea level, Telaga Warna is a
testament to Cetnral Java’s surreal beauty.
legend has it that the lake cries the tears of
a queen a long time ago who, after being
barren for years, had finally given birth to a
beautiful daughter. alas, her parents spoiled
the princess. When presented with a necklace
on her 17th birthday, the princess took and
threw the necklace on the floor, shattering
the jewellery into pieces. The queen started
to weep and soon everyone else followed
suit. and in the place where the necklace fell,
spring water started to appear, which grew
larger until it formed into a lake and drowned
the whole palace. The unique colours at
Telaga Warna is said to reflect the scattered
necklace that is still at the bottom of the lake.
Whatever the legend, Telaga Warna is a true
Anyone who has seen Disney.
Pixar’s summer release Brave
would immediately be drawn
to the stunning, impressive setting of the film.
Scotland, with its rich tapestry of myth, legends and
culture, was the inspiration for the film and was the
perfect medium to highlight the country‘s majestic
castles, unique heritage and fascinating folklore.
With Brave, Disney•Pixar’s collaboration with
Scotland’s national tourism organisation,
VisitScotland, marked the first time the studio
has worked with a country’s tourism organisation
on such a scale. The film depicted all the thrills
of Scotland, combining the spectacular scenery,
fascinating folklore, unique heritage, majestic
castles and magnificent landscapes of this
truly iconic country in a stunning big-screen
adventure. From the rolling heather-clad hills to
the imposing peaks of the Scottish Highlands and
the idyllic lochs of Scotland, all these came to life
in shimmering hues of blue and green while the
shadowy forest glens and the mythical standing
stones were replicated in stunning computer
animation never before seen on the big screen.
The story of Brave takes place in a rugged and mythical time, and
focuses on the film’s protagonist merida (voiced by Kelly macdonald),
a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voiced
by Billy Connolly) and Queen elinor (voiced by emma Thompson).
Determined to carve her own path in life, merida inadvertently
unleashes chaos in the kingdom and must learn the meaning of true
bravery before it’s too late.
Brave maybe set in mythical scotland, but many aspects of the film
captured the very essence of scotland that may make the country the
hottest place to visit yet this year.no doubt the families who were drawn
to the cinema to see Brave would also be considering visiting scotland,
the inspiration behind the film’s impressive setting. at least, that’s what
visitscotland hopes for. With their help, visitors to the country may play
merida and indulge in many of Brave’s magical moments.
To play archery like merida, visit laggan outdoor activity Centre,
Dumfries and galloway. First time archers need not fear as you can
practice shooting your arrows first indoor before opting to have some
fun outdoors and tackle the archery range. set up in a forest, live like
the scottish ancestors and try Castle laggan attack with your newfound
skills, and try to conquer this hill top castle. You can also cheer
at the tug of war at a Highland games. rub shoulders with royalty at
the Braemar Highland gathering, which takes place on 1 september
annually. enjoy scottish traditions such as Highland dancing, tossing
the caber, putting the stone and throwing the hammer.
Wind things down by exploring the mythical forests
of scotland, in particular, The Hermitage, Perthshire.
Birdsongs, emerald cushions of moss and hauntingly
dark foliage including some of europe’s oldest trees
can be found here. a visit any time of the year will be
awe inspiring, with wildflowers and leaves changing
colours with the seasons. Discover the circular trail of
The Hermitage for a magical landscape ornamented
by stunning waterfalls, old stone bridges and hidden
grottos.
and what is Brave without the royals? Be the King of
the Castle at Dunnottar Castle, stonehaven, where
past visitors included William Wallace, mary Queen
of scots, the marquis of montrose and the future
King Charles ii. Walk in their footsteps as you explore
the dramatic clifftop fortress set within a spectacular
coastal surrounding. Dunnottar holds many secrets of
scotland’s colourful past and is probably well known
for hiding (and successfully smuggling out) the
scottish Crown Jewels from the english enemies.
another castle worth visiting is the eilean Donan
Castle, Dornie, by Kyle of lochalsh. as one of the most
iconic images of scotland, eilean Donan is recognised
all around the world. The castle is situated on an
island at the point where three great sea lochs meet,
and is surrounded by majestic scenery. although first
inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified
castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood
guard over the lands of Kintail. since then, at least
four different versions of the castle have been built
and re-built as the feudal history of scotland unfolded
through the centuries.
You may also want to consider the mythical standing
stones. The magnificent standing stones of Callanish
(or Calanais in gaelic) will be forever immortalised
in Brave. inspired by its legendary fame, these huge
and imposing stones made it into one of the movie’s
scenes, and for those who visit the stones, it will
no doubt leave everyone speechless. no one really
knows how or why these ancient stones came to be,
but a visit never fails to move anyone. a similar site
that will intrigue is the ring of Brodgar stone Circle
and Henge, which is part of The Heart of neolithic
orkney World Heritage site. The ring is surrounded
by a large circular ditch or henge and was one of the
first sites in the British isles to be awarded unesCo
status. For more ideas on how to do scotland ala
ere’s the question: Would you pay for
a dinner that requires you to prepare
your own meals, bring your own cutlery,
tablecloth and chairs at a venue you know nothing of except just a few hours
before on event day?
Well, apparently thousands of people would and will gladly do it again.
Dîner en Blanc (dinner in White) has been touted as ‘an organised flash mob’;
bringing together a crowd in an event that, from the outside, seems like
a logistical nightmare. It sprang to life in 1988 in Paris when host François
Pasquier wanted a reunion with friends. As that ‘friends’ list grew, the dinner
venue changed to a public place, and for everyone to easily spot themselves,
every guest was required to dress in white.
Hence, Dîner en Blanc was born.
What started with simple word-of-mouth – friends inviting friends – today has
as many as 15,000 white-clad guests meeting annually in Paris’ public spaces,
tens of thousands on a waiting list hoping to get a sought-after ticket, and
thousands more worldwide. Dîner en Blanc has managed to create interest
worldwide and link culinary enthusiasts in one network across the globe.
The event gained in scale, from Paris to Montreal, New York and Singapore.
With no advertising or major outreach, the summer soiree has social media
to thank for its explosive growth and popularity. People simply place their
names on an online waiting list and those who get to attend a Dîner en Blanc
can become members, are invited back, and in turn, can invite their friends.
Dîner en Blanc is about building a pyramid of friends and a network that links
memories. And members are encouraged to join the party in other cities to
make Dîner en Blanc a truly global event.
Throughout all stints taking place annually worldwide, certain things remain
unchanged. The outdoor location still remains a secret right up to the final
hour, diners are still asked to dress entirely in white, prepare a three-course
meal, bring along their favourite china and silverware, white table and chairs,
then wait at a rallying location.
Once guests arrive at the dinner location, everyone sets up their own table
and enjoy their picnic dinner and experience a public space in their city in a
new way. When the time comes to leave, everybody folds their tables and
chairs, pack their crystal and dinnerware, collect all garbage and head back.
Not a crumb is left behind, and not a sign can be seen of what had just taken
place a few hours before.
The allure of Dîner en Blanc transcends differences in culture. In cities across
the world, people regardless of who they are and where they are, embrace
the fundamental value of wanting to share a meal with friends, be a part
of a wider community and appreciate the beauty that exists in their own
backyards. The magical nature of the event will continue to captivate people
wherever it goes.
Seems like a lot of hard work for just one night of dinner. But that’s part of
the allure … and what’s kept Dîner en Blanc going and growing globally.
bit of fun and games, there’s Capture The Flag, where kids help to
save stranded Wonder Crew. over at Curiosity island, children can
practice upon their green fingers to plant seeds at Pots & Planks. There
are also the more ‘traditional’ programmes kids can look forward to
such as board games and storytelling. What’s interesting is that all
the activities involve Curio Coins, the Port of lost Wonder’s collectible
currency. The coins are issued to the young guests at the entrance with
the ticket admission and they can use these coins to ‘pay’ for their
chosen activities or a surprise snack! it’s a great way to encourage
children to experiment and explore with the currency and teach them
accountability.
For more extended fun for the little ones, stay on at sentosa to catch
water jets, flame bursts, lasers and captivating music for a unique,
songs of the sea was created by world-renowned and internationally
guggenheim abu Dhabi, part of the wider saadiyat Cultural District,
where there will be two other museums – the louvre abu Dhabi and
september. This will be followed by the annual abu Dhabi art in
november. This cultural renaissance is central to abu Dhabi’s national
identity. With its deep awareness of the need to preserve traditional
culture while balancing the demands of the future, it is through the
evolution of art and creativity that the visitor discovers abu Dhabi’s
materstroke in crafting its own identity.
again into the capital for the final leg. As details
at press time remains unavailable, spectators and
cycling enthusiasts can rest assure that this year’s
mulanya acara ini pada tahun 2005, dengan
Jelajah Asia 2011-2012 dimulakan di Tour
d’Indonesia pada bulan Oktober 2011. Sebagai
tuan rumah perlumbaan terakhir musim, Negara
Brunei Darussalam akan menjadi ujian getir
terakhir yang akan menjadi saksi kepada individu
dan pasukan yang mampu memungut mata
terbanyak. Ketika ini, Hossein Alizadeh dari
pasukan Tabriz Petrochemical mendahului senarai
pelumba individu, diekori rapat oleh Andrea
Guardini dari Farnese Vini serta Kam-Po Wong.
Memandangkan terdapat lima peringkat dalam
Tour de Brunei, masih belum terlambat untuk
pelumba lain memintas Hossein Alizadeh.
Acara di Negara Brunei Darussalam ini akan
berlangsung dari 26 hingga 30 September. Tahun
lalu, perlumbaan lima peringkat ini membawa
para pelumba ke setiap pelusuk negara. Mereka
bermula di Bandar Seri Begawan menghala ke
Kuala Belait sebelum bergerak ke arah Tutong dan
kembali semula ke ibu negara untuk peringkat
terakhir. Walaupun butiran terperinci perlumbaan
masih belum dimuktamadkan, para peminat
The
Royal Trophy
MuHIBAH
golfing excellence comes to the sultanate.

The Royal Trophy was the vision
of the legendary five-time Major
winner, the late Seve Ballesteros,
of gifting the Asian Continent with the same
golf growth impetus the European Continent
experienced in the 1980s and 1990s as a result
of the Ryder Cup.
Brunei Darussalam is proud to host its inaugural
Royal Trophy from 14 to 16 December, 2012 at
The Empire Hotel & Country Club.
In the Royal Trophy’s history, Europe prevailed in
the first two editions of the championship while
Asia secured a most historic victory over the
European masters of team match play in 2009;
possibly the Asian Continent’s most important
achievement in the sport to date.
In the making of a most amazing sporting drama;
the fourth edition of the Royal Trophy came down
to the final putt of the final hole in the final match
of the championship. The Royal Trophy delivered
the best of sport, the greatest level of competitive
spirit and the utmost sportsmanship.
The fifth edition of the Royal Trophy was held at
the magnificent Black Mountain Golf Club in the
beautiful coastal city of Hua Hin in the Kingdom
of Thailand.
On the first day of the matches, Asia and Europe
were comprehensively even registering a tie of
2-2. On the second day the Asian Team produced
flawless golf to secure the first clean sweep in the
history of the competition winning all four fourball
matches and assuming a lead large enough
which seemed nearly impossible to be reversed.
the Royal Trophy.
MuHIBAH
But the final day of the Royal Trophy was to deliver
an incredible and historic recovery by Captain
Colin Montgomerie and his team members with
their remaining undefeated in all eight singles
matches, securing six wins and halving two
matches which resulted in the European Continent
retaining stewardship of the Royal Trophy with a
narrow victory of 9-7.
An exhilarated Montgomerie stated at the
conclusion of the matches: “This was such a
dramatic event, and it must have captivated
spectators and viewers all over the world. It was
an enthralling spectacle and a fantastic match,
played in an exemplary spirit. Even though the
result went against the Asian Team, the match can
only help the growth of golf in this area, just as
Seve Ballesteros predicted it.”
Consistent with the foundations outlined at
the establishment of the Royal Trophy by the
legendary five-time Major winner Seve Ballesteros,
the Championship delivered the most powerful
sporting inspiration to the public at-large in over
250 countries and territories worldwide through
the television broadcast of the matches which was
transmitted by more than 70 television channels.
The tournament compellingly inspired the youth
of Asia and Europe to one day represent their
continent and people; the competition broadly
promoted friendship and cooperation between
the peoples of these two great continents; and
the Royal Trophy simultaneously showcased the
competitiveness of sport and the truest spirit of
sportsmanship.
In the words of Royal Trophy European Players
Committee Members six-time Major winner
Sir Nick Faldo, former world number one Ian
Woosnam OBE, two-time Masters champion José
Maria Olazábal and European Ryder Cup hero
Paul McGinley, “The opportunity to play for your
continent is at once a most meaningful gift and
a most heavy responsibility; something Asian golf
can now experience as a result of the Royal Trophy.
We are ready to support the continuing growth
of the Royal Trophy and we are delighted to have
joined the late Seve Ballesteros in this significant
undertaking.”
The fifth edition of the Royal Trophy certainly
provided further confirmation of the late Seve
Ballesteros’ vision, first voiced at the inaugural
edition of the Competition in 2006: The Royal
Trophy will grow into one of the worlds greatest
sporting events.
The next edition of the Royal Trophy will be held
as a tribute to the late legendary Seve Ballesteros
who led the Europeans to victory at the two
inaugural editions of the competition. The
prestigious and highly competitive team matchplay
continental championship will once again
feature eight players and a captain representing
the Asian and European continents respectively
in a series of sixteen foursomes, four-ball and
singles matches.
The two teams will be battling for stewardship of
the Royal Trophy at the palatial Empire Hotel &
Country Club in the Sultanate of Brunei. Twotime
Masters Champion José Maria Olazábal and
35-time tournament title winner Naomichi Joe
Ozaki have been nominated as the European and
Asian Team Captains respectively. Japanese golf
superstar Ryo Ishikawa and Korean match-play
maestro Kim Kyung-tae have been selected by
Asian Team Captain Ozaki for the Asian defense,

while eight-time European Tour Order of Merit
winner Colin Montgomerie OBE is the first player
nominated by European Skipper Olazábal for the
defense of the Trophy.
The hosting of the Royal Trophy in the Sultanate
of Brunei offers visitors a fantastic opportunity
to experience world class golfing action on the
Empire Hotel & Country Club’s Jack Nicklaus
Signature golf course and enjoy the splendour of
Brunei, a jewel set amidst the monumental Borneo
The audi Q3 premium compact suv
feels right at home on or off any road.
The Q3 showcases audi’s expertise
in all aspects of engineering: From
its lightweight body through
strong and efficient drive trains and a dynamic
chassis to its state-of-the-art assistance systems
and multimedia systems. many of its features
are straight from the luxury class.
The audi Q3 features the sportiest and most
progressive design in its segment. The singleframe
grille with its tapered upper corners
dominates the front; its outline is extended
by the dynamic curve of the engine hood.
The wedge-shaped headlights are available
as a xenon-plus version including leD daytime
running lights. leD rear lights are also
included. large air inlets hint at the potential
of the engines.
viewed from the side, the Q3 similarly exhibits
audi’s classic design characteristics. The tornado
line divides the side underneath the windows.
The dynamic line imparts additional flourishes
near the side sills and the wheel arches have
a muscular look. metal constitutes two thirds
of the vehicle’s exterior; the greenhouse the
remaining third. The roof line slopes markedly
toward the ground; the D-posts resemble those
of a coupe.
Despite its coupe-like styling, the audi Q3 is
clearly recognisable as a member of the Q
family. its wraparound tailgate is similar in
design to those on its larger siblings, the Q5
and Q7. its drag coefficient of 0.32 raises the
bar in this segment; moreover, it’s under body
fairing facilitates optimum airflow – underneath
the vehicle, too.
This compact SUV’s body is very rigid and impact-resistant yet quiet on the
road. The passenger cell incorporates a great many tailored blanks as well as
extremely strong hot-formed steel. These components are quite thin, which
reduces the vehicle’s weight. The tailgate and the engine hood of the Audi Q3
are made of aluminium.
The roomy interior of the Audi Q3 harmoniously mirrors the exterior
design’s sinewy yet gentle styling. A large curve, known as a wrap-around,
encapsulates the driver and the front-seat passenger – a feature familiar from
the brand’s large model lines. The dashboard’s horizontal layout underscores
its width. The colour display (as large as seven inches diagonally) on the
instrument panel is a first in the Q series.
Operating the Audi Q3 entails straightforward logic and intuitive userfriendliness
– typical Audi. It is simple to read the instruments at a glance;
the seats provide outstanding support and comfort, the Audi concert music
system with an AUX-IN input is standard, as are an air conditioner and an
extensive array of occupant restraint systems.
Numerous high-end options attest to the excellent technological standards of
the Q3. They include Audi’s MMI®, an ambient lighting package with a great
many LEDs, a storage package, sports seats and starting the engine at the
touch of a button. Two-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning and a threespoke
leather steering wheel in a new Q-specific look.
The Audi Q3 has a luggage compartment that offers plenty of room for
recreational and sports equipment. Its 460 litre (16.24 cu ft) capacity swells to
a volume of 1,365 litres (48.2 cu ft) with the split rear seat backrests folded
down. A roof rail is standard. A wealth of options makes driving this compact
SUV even better. Among them, a luggage compartment package, a frontpassenger
seat with a folding seat back, a reversible load liner, a reversible
mat, a loading-sill protector made of stainless steel and a load-through hatch
in the rear seat backrest. The Audi Q3 can tow a trailer weighing as much as
2.0 metric tons (4,400 lb).

The Audi Q3 for Brunei will be available with a four-cylinder engine with
displacement of 2.0 litres. It delivers a great output of 155kW or 211hp and
terrific torque of 300 Nm. In addition, the engine combines Audi’s mighty
efficiency technologies: direct fuel injection, turbo charging and the energy
recovery system or Recuperation.
The 2.0 TFSI delivers 155 kW (211hp) propels the Q3 from zero to 100 km/h
(62.14 mph) in 6.9 seconds and on up to a top speed of 230 km/h. Averaging
7.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.
The TFSI engine will be supplied with quattro® permanent all-wheel drive.
Its key element is a hydraulic multi-plate clutch, which redistributes power at
lightning speed from the front axle to the rear axle as needed.
The Q3 2.0 TFSI quattro with 155 kW (170 hp) will roll off the assembly line
with quattro drive and a dynamic seven-speed S tronic. With the Recuperation
system kinetic energy during coasting or breaking is converted into usable
electrical energy and is used to assist the generator during subsequent
acceleration saving up to 3% of fuel.
A Passage
Through Time
a deep passion for his city and history
inspired ivan man dy to establish old
manila Walks; allowing him to show
others the manila he loves and through
fresh eyes.
what prompted you to start old Manila walks?
I worked as a volunteer docent in a local museum before
and have had a very deep interest in the history of my city.
One thing led to another and pretty soon, I found myself
doing work in the biggest museum of my life: Manila.
when you first began, how did you get people
excited about your walks?
Before we started, historical walks were not really popular
in Manila. I guess there was a novelty in it – you now
suddenly have this guy walking around and passionately
sharing tidbits on Manila’s history and heritage. The press
started to notice, then came the bloggers and soon,
TV media followed including international coverage
(Discovery Channel was among one of them).
Since its inception, were there any parts of
objectives of the walk that have changed much?
Old Manila Walks has and always will be about sharing
Manila’s history and heritage with others. By and large,
this also stems from my personal advocacy in making
people aware of the heritage of the old city, most
especially the built heritage (old buildings). In general,
heritage structures were not appreciated much nor
were they protected. It’s sad to note but that was how
the Walks began. We wanted to make some noise that
Manila’s heritage is something worth preserving and
learning from. Of course it helped too, that the tours
became popular and we were able to create something
which combined our passion with elements of
entrepreneurship.

Do you ever get bored doing the walks?
Never, since we get to meet new people every day. And we
don’t have office politics and take home assignments!
Any memorable moments you’ve encountered?
Well, Old Manila Walks did open certain opportunities that we
never anticipated, such as media coverage. We have hosted
countless local media personalities as well as foreign ones,
including chefs Anthony Bourdain and Bobby Chinn of the
Discovery Channel. We’ve also been featured in History
Channel and National Geographic as well as meeting lots of
interesting individuals like Nobel Laureates and top business
people. In all, a tour is memorable when you can rub off
your enthusiasm to people and make them leave with an
appreciative face afterwards.
what do guests find most interesting about your walks?
The history, the food, the architecture. Things that they didn’t
know about my city but have always been there. We do get a
lot of locals; people who have lived in the Metro all their lives.
In a way, we’re glad that we’re helping them rediscover the
roots of Manila and taking them out from the oversized malls
even if it’s just for 3 hours.
what do you find interesting about this job?
I like the creativity of it because I wear several hats at the same
time – as an educator, a tour guide, a host and an ambassador
of our city. Our tours have also been used for a lot of creative
events such as product launchings, birthday parties, educational
school trips and even PR events. I find it refreshing to be
able to combine my interest in history and heritage with all
these things.
Is this a full-time job for you?
Yes, it is full-time but I don’t do it everyday; which leaves me a
lot of time to do other stuff as well.
How do you see old Manila walks evolving?
Well, we are now partnering with outside parties in developing
our brand of tours in certain history-rich areas outside Manila.
Currently, we are developing themed tours such as a historical
hike in the island of Corregidor (48kms from Manila), one of the
most famous World War II sites in the country.
what do you love most about your city?
My personal attachment to it. This is the city I was born into and
for all its warts, I find inspiration in it.
movies, classic Hollywood films and TV and
audio programmes for all ages are available
1970s 1980s
• The maiden Royal Brunei Airlines
flight to Singapore left Bandar Seri
Begawan on a Boeing 737-200 on
14 May, 1975.
• Two Boeing 737 aircraft were put
into service flying five times a week to
Singapore, two times to Hong Kong,
and seven times to Kota Kinabalu.
• Services to Bangkok and Manila
were added.
for freshness and flavour. In fact, there’s
lighter meal options, complemented by our
award-winning cabin service from our crew.
Alcohol-free Environment Policy
Royal Brunei Airlines operates alcohol-free
flights to all destinations.
• RBA added a Boeing 737, the quick change
convertible aircraft, to its fleet. This aircraft
allowed for either an all-passenger or an all-cargo
configuration, or a combination of both.
• RBA accepted the delivery of its Boeing 757 aircraft
that featured a redesigned livery combining Brunei’s
traditional Royal colours on 16 May, 1986.

Special Meals
Royal Brunei offers a variety of tasty culinary
solutions to suit our passengers’ special dietary
requirements. Special meals can be ordered
when you make your reservation; please
confirm your request at least 24 hours before
boarding your flight.
Hand Luggage
For your safety and comfort, you may store
your hand luggage in the overhead lockers
or under the seat in front of you. Please
do not hesitate to ask our cabin crew for
help in stowing your luggage properly. Be
careful when opening the overhead luggage
compartments, as items dislodged by
aircraft movement may fall on you or fellow
passengers.
Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAG)
Various countries have implemented
restrictions on the carriage of liquids, aerosols
and gels in compliance with new guidelines set
by the International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO). Passengers transiting through airports
and carrying any liquids, pastes and gels
in containers over 100ml may be asked to
dispose of the items at security checkpoints.
These restrictions may affect your ability to
carry duty-free purchases onboard the aircraft.
Customers are advised to check with duty free
personnel before making their purchases. All
liquids, aerosols and gels must be carried in
containers of no greater than 100ml/3.3oz
capacity (approximately 100gm in weight)
and placed in a transparent, resealable plastic
bag. The plastic bag must be removed from
carry on baggage and presented to security
1990s 2000s
• RBA took delivery of the first of three leased Boeing 767-200ER
aircraft in June 1990 and set a long distance world record for
twin-engine commercial airlines.
• The delivery of Boeing 767-200ER aircraft enabled RBA’s route to
extend to London Gatwick in November 1990.
• Twice-weekly flights to London Heathrow began in May 1991.
The route became a daily service on 1 December, 1996.
• RBA employed the use of a Fokker 50 aircraft to service Miri and
Labuan in Malaysia, two destinations that were significant to the
growth of Brunei’s oil and gas industry.
• The opportunity to expand regional connections saw RBA
establishing a service to Surabaya, Indonesia in 1997.
• RBA took delivery of two new Airbus A319
aircraft in August and September 2003.
• Two more Airbus A320s were delivered in
December 2003 and January 2004.
• In January 2010, RBA introduced Royal
Brunei Holidays, a revamp of its Golden
Touch Holidays, which offers passengers
value-for-money holiday packages available
locally and abroad.
personnel at the checkpoint for inspection and
separate x-ray screening.
Exceptions to the new regulations are
medicines and dietary supplements needed
during a flight, including baby food. Proof of
need may be required.
use of Electronic Equipment
Mobile phones cannot be used at any time
during the flight. They should be switched
off as soon as the cabin crew makes the
announcement. Other electronic devices
included in this list are: Citizen’s band (CB)
radio, remote-controlled devices (such as
radio-controlled toys), and transmitting devices
that emit radio frequencies. These devices
may interfere with the aircraft’s electronic
equipment, compromising aircraft safety and
endangering the lives of passengers and crew.
• Direct services to Shanghai were relaunched
in March 2010.
• RBA’s newly-leased Boeing 777-200ER
aircraft took off on its first commercial flight
from Bandar Seri Begawan to London via
Dubai in June 2010.
to Melbourne, Australia in March 2011.
Welcome onboard
Abode of Peace
Brunei Darussalam is a country rich in culture and heritage.
it is a small, peaceful, prosperous kingdom on the northern
shore of the ecologically-rich island of Borneo. Come and
discover Brunei, a Kingdom of unexpected Treasures.
Brunei is arguably best known today as an oil producing
country. The nation became independent in 1984 and,
thanks to its large reserves of oil and gas, now has one of the
highest standards of living in the world. Its population is just
over 370,000, made up of two-thirds ethnic Malay, with the
remainder being Chinese, Indian and other indigenous groups.
The Sultanate has four districts: Brunei-Muara (which includes
the capital Bandar Seri Begawan), Temburong, Tutong and
Belait. ‘Darussalam’, the Arabic word for ‘Abode of Peace’
describes Brunei’s Islamic history that dates back some 1,500
years. Today, Brunei remains the world’s only Malay Islamic
Monarchy with an unbroken royal lineage that has ruled the
nation for the past 600 years.
