GIVEN PLOT
BANYAN TREE
ACCOMODATING ALL ANCILLARY
FUNCTIONS WITHIN EXISTING
SPACE SUCH THAT EXTENSION
CONSISTS SOLELY OF BATHS.
EXTENSION CONTRADICTS
GEOMETRY OF EXISTING STRUCTURE
BY DIVERGING RADIALLY TO PRODUCE
“JAGGED LINES”.
THE LARGE BANYAN TREE PRESENT IN THE PLOT HAS BEEN
TAKEN AS THE TRIGGER BEHIND THE DESIGN.
THE FORM OF THE BUILDING IS SUCH THAT IT COMPLIMENTS
THE FOLIAGE OF THE TREE. IT INCREASES IN HEIGHT AS THE
FOLIAGE RECEEDS. LARGE OPENINGS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED,
OPENING INTO THIS FOLIAGE SO AS TO INCLUDE IT INTO
THE SPACES AND ACQUIRE FILTERED, DIM LIGHT.
The studio as a whole had to collaborate to design an art and wellness centre using the existing AES blocks
present in close proximity to the knowledge precinct of Ahmedabad. I was assigned the bath house as a part
of the wellness centre.
The projects attempts to contradict the language of the existing building and adopt that of the banyan tree in
front of it. The form of the building recedes against the foliage of the tree in response to it. The spaces are meant
to be reminiscent of those found in caves, with light coming in through slits and odd shaped openings placed at
the top. The colour palette consists solely of shades of grey. Reinforced concrete has been used extensively, for
majority of the walls, the roof and the floor, to be able to easily create the “jagged” form of the building.
