BUBBLE COMMUNITY

VERTICAL LIVING | HIGH RISE HOUSING PROJECT

The project is based in the year 2050 which is imagined as a time where public transport becomes

the main mode of movement in the city with movement of people restricted at city level and a

significant decrease in number of people travelling outside of the city. To support this lifestyle

largely self-sustaining communities will house large numbers of people within a single complex

having multiple functions with residents spending most of their time within the complex. The aim is

to provide middle income citizens with affordable housing of a middle category between high end

and low end developments.

Introduction of clear axis through centre of site to house public realm and its activities and make development

more inward. Approach roads have been placed towards the edges of plot to keep centre free from vehicular

hindrance and pedestrian-friendly. Curved and wavy nature of development allows for fluidity in spaces and

movement and could also help in achievement of communal quality. Commercial built up is integrated by

placing the commercial buildings along ends of axis of public realm. Hence, public realm acts as a connector

between residential and non residential.

DATE OF ISSUE: 24-10-2019

The work done during internship included making GFC drawings, tender

drawings, presentation drawings, 3D sketchup models, budgeting and

quantification, correspondence with consultants and sourcing of materials.

Following are some of the drawings and views of sketchup models that

were made for a design studio for Mahindra & Mahindra as well as a craft

The project comprises of a series of industrial sheds that have been converted for the most

glamorous and trendy role in the automobile industry - the styling studio. The MS portals of

the structure have been retained and have created an enigmatic studio, using just concrete

and steel in various forms and textures. The play of light and shadow, and minute steel

details, along with the challenge of working with an undocumented existing structure that

refused to take any loads had lead to a deceptively light and nuanced design.

The craft centre named ‘Shambhala’ is a re-purposed building. The original function of the

building is that of a bank. The client wished to tranform the space such that it could add

to the cultural value of the area around it. Craftsmen would set up stalls to display and sell

their products on the ground floor while the upper floor would be used as a cafe and pantry

space for the visitors. Though the building itself was a retained structure, the in-situ casted

terrazzo floor, furniture as well as the lighting have been carefully sourced and articulated to

create the warmth and charm that would accompany the art pieces being sold.

“JAGGED LINES”.

THE LARGE BANYAN TREE PRESENT IN THE PLOT HAS BEEN

TAKEN AS THE TRIGGER BEHIND THE DESIGN.

THE FORM OF THE BUILDING IS SUCH THAT IT COMPLIMENTS

THE FOLIAGE OF THE TREE. IT INCREASES IN HEIGHT AS THE

FOLIAGE RECEEDS. LARGE OPENINGS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED,

OPENING INTO THIS FOLIAGE SO AS TO INCLUDE IT INTO

THE SPACES AND ACQUIRE FILTERED, DIM LIGHT.

The studio as a whole had to collaborate to design an art and wellness centre using the existing AES blocks

present in close proximity to the knowledge precinct of Ahmedabad. I was assigned the bath house as a part

of the wellness centre.

The projects attempts to contradict the language of the existing building and adopt that of the banyan tree in

front of it. The form of the building recedes against the foliage of the tree in response to it. The spaces are meant

to be reminiscent of those found in caves, with light coming in through slits and odd shaped openings placed at

the top. The colour palette consists solely of shades of grey. Reinforced concrete has been used extensively, for

majority of the walls, the roof and the floor, to be able to easily create the “jagged” form of the building.

FINAL PROJECT PLACED ON SITE

FINAL PROJECT

The brief was to design a centre for DoCoMoMo

International (International Committee for

Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites

and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement).

The trigger behind the design was a quote by an architect

whose work was supposed to be the inspiration behind

the spaces in the institution. The quote chosen was ‘The

Nature of Space reflects what it wants to be’ by Louis

Kahn. The design intention throughout the process was

to create spaces that are directional and have the power

to guide the people that inhabit them. The centre is

meant to promote awareness about modern buildings

by conducting workshops, lectures and exhibitions

focusing on them, for people of all ages. The resultant

design was divided into three distinct bays for working,

learning and interacting, with all three functions coming

together at the Cafe’ placed in the center on top.

The Nature of Space reflects what it Wants to Be.

WORLD OF WECORP

VERTICITY 2030: LIVE | WORK | PLAY

The program was to design the

context of the year 2030 and a

40,000 sq.m vertical building in

this context.

My imagination of the year

2030 involved the complete

breakdown of social interaction.

People have been imagined to be

living digitally with an augmented

reality displaying before their

eyes at all times. Everyone has

become indifferent to the spaces

and people around them and do

not interact with anyone outside

of the virtual realm. People work

from and stay within the confines

of their single room occupancies

for weeks at a time, having food,

water and all the services they

could need delivered at their

door. Architecture turns into the

making of banal spaces that are

only optimum and nothing more,

since no one would be able to

appreciate or even experience

it. A storyboard was made to

solidify the concepts existing in

this imagined world, showing a

day in the life of a person living

in it.

7

8

BEFORE AFTER BEFORE

AFTER

The next step was to start understanding how a space can be made banal by making simple changes to it.

The process of designing spaces in such a world began by establishing that they are not meant to provoke any

experience since the value of a space has now been brought down to that of a container. Studies were conducted

into the different kinds of spaces that have the potential of causing an experience for the user, and one such

space that can invoke curiosity is a curved corridor. An exercise was carried out werein the different methods of

removing the mystery out of a curved corridor were illustrated.

BEFORE

AFTER

BEFORE

AFTER

These exercises and studies helped me gain a deeper knowledge into the design process that would be used in

the world imagined to exist in 2030.

WORLD OF WECORP

VERTICITY 2030: LIVE | WORK | PLAY

All spaces were imagined

to be comprised of curved

surfaces that would create fluid

movement, which in turn is

easier for the user who cannot

see as they walk and instead

rely on on-screen navigation.

The spaces in the building -

residential units, commercial

floor, recreational rooms,

gymnasium, swimming pool

- were represented as a

series of sketches forming a

walkthrough .

READING BOX

LEARNING FROM HISTORY AND RESPONSES TO CLIMATE

SITE CONTEXT AND PLACEMENT

The project entailed designing a

9m x 9m x 9m reading box which

would be located in the old city of

Ahmedabad.

The intention was to create a

space having a variety of smaller

individual spaces to provide users

with the cosy privacy that is best

enjoyed while reading. Climate

responsive interventions such as

fins at the southern end, an opening

designed to capture north light and

Brie Soliel have been harmonised

with changing levels in the floor to

create a 3D maze-like effect.
