defender under pressure. Kathleen Maru got through a good
rate of work at right-half, mostly demolishing any attacks
building up on her side. Betsy Maxwell worked alongside
Lyn Karina on the left and these two stood out as arguably
the two best players in the Narra team. Lyn’s crossed drives
had Fraser in a tizzy and Betsy was the other player
who, thoughout her game, made accurate interpasses with
Adriana and Lyn, and sealed her successful game with a
curling field goat and a penalty.
Paula Douglas worked well on the right wing,
feeding strikers Jenny and Karina. At one stage late in the
game, the Fraser keeper swapped for a fullback and tried to
mark Lyn Karina out of her effective attacking role. Being
also a solid girl, she nearly wiped out Lyn in an enthusiastic
charge.
Fraser were unable to find the net but did give Narra
a scare or two. The Narra girl’s unwillingness to use the inside
of the foot for accurate controlled play, saw many chances go
astray, and in this manner, five further goals went begging.
Player of the day was shared by Ann-Marie
Wanakore, Betsy Maxwell and Lynette Karina.

Ngaruawahia-Affco v Tauranga
Early pressure by Ngaruawahia United in their
northern league fourth division soccer match against Tauranga
was soon reversed by Tauranga and they went ahead in the
18th minute when an error in defence caught United wide
open from a simple cross and United found themselves down
0-1.
However United received a penalty for obstruction
several minutes later and John Brown smacked the ball in for
the equalizer. Later it was Brown who gave United the winner
when he took the ball on the half and, ball to toe, neck and
neck with the Tauranga defence, he slid the ball through
between the frantic defender and the keeper to see it beat the
cover defence into the net.
George Paul looks better every game in midfield,
and along side Jason Cargo whose touches of brilliant
distribution caused concern in the Tauranga defence, they
made a good midfield team with Mike Liddle. Shawn Finn
was his acrobatic self ,and, along with winger Jeff
McLaughlan, were named men of the match by Radio
Waikato.
Neil Gorman Finds Form
Neil Gorman notched both United goals in their 2-1
win over Unicol at Hamilton in the Waikato 1st division
soccer competition. This was the first game of a subsidiary
round.
United Still Undefeated
With five championship games behind them in the
Waikato 3rd division soccer competition, Ngaruawahia United
continued their wins with a 6-2 victory away at Tokoroa. This
puts Ngaruawahia four points clear at the top of the table in
front of Tokoroa and five points clear of Te Kuiti.
High School Girls
In the final match this term Ngaruawahia High
School girls team met in a friendly at Fraser High School,
Fraser’s No 2 team. Goals from Jenny Clow and Jo Keeley
(2) paved the way for a 3-0 win to Ngaruawahia.
Diane Fairey had two tight situations to clear up in
goal for Narra. while Betsy Maxwell tried out her power shots
from long range. Eileen Harrison had her first run on the left
wing before shooting off to netball in Taupiri.
From 11 games the girls have lost only one and
drawn one, and conceded five goals while scoring 47.

Fraser Eclipsed at Ngaruawahia
Mike Liddle’s boomer from 30 metres out set the
seal on the Fraser v Ngaruawahia-Affco northern league
soccer match at Ngaruawahia in the home team’s 2-0 win.
It was in the 18th minute of the second spell when
Mike Heappey’s left-wing corner was headed clear and met
full-bore by Liddle on his “wrong” foot. The speed of the shot
was such that both teams were still reacting from the initial
corner when the Fraser keeper had the embarrassing situation
of retrieving the ball from the bottom corner of the net. This
shot followed eight minutes after John Brown had put
Ngaruawahia ahead from the penalty spot.
Fraser’s Graeme Kenny found United’s Charlie
Gorman too skilful on the wing and resorted to some
indiscriminate tackling to try and put Charlie off his effective
raids. It took referee Len Morland some eighty minutes to
book Kenny for his efforts. Fellow defender Kerry Barakat
had previously been booked by the referee for similar tactics,
and although his gesticulations were fortunately missed by the
referee, it availed him little.
Ken Murray hit the woodwork with a curled shot in
the first half, as did Fraser from a long drive from the wing.
Fraser’s build-up was slightly better than Ngaruawahia’s but
Tozer, Burt and Dornan proved able in defence for the home
team.
Steve Williams had a good day and John Brown
caused Fraser problems with his “new-fangled” left-foot
shots.
Third Division Unbeaten
Ngaruawahia’s 5-1 win over Te Awamutu
continued their unbroken run of wins in the Waikato 3rd
division soccer tournament. Since qualifying for the play-offs
by finishing in the top six of 14 teams, United has not
conceded a match.
Stafford Magee gained an early goal before Te
Awamutu equalised. However shortly afterwards winger
Andy Bell pressured the Te Awamutu defence into an own
goal for the lead which Narra never lost.
Staf gained his second with a snap shot from an
acute angle for a 3-1 lead. Then it was Bruce McIntosh’s
moment. Taking the ball down the right wing he dummied his
way past the defence, centred to Staff Magee whose shot
scooted across the face of the goal. Andy Bell, chasing hard,
reached the ball and cut if back for Bruce McIntosh to volley
home, with the keeper at sixes and sevens. 4-1.
Ngaruawahia looked bemused in the second spell and
the only goal came as a surprise to Jim McCaig when he saw
his centering cross drift over the keeper into the net. 5-1.
Ngaruawahia now have a comfortable lead of five points in
the competition.
First Division
Tony Armstrong prevented Ngaruawahia United
from going down without scoring against Tokoroa in
Ngaruawahia’s 3-1 loss in the Waikato 1st division soccer
competition. Grant Prendergast performed well under
pressure.

Hat Tricks Missed
With the possibility of the referee abandoning the
match always present Ngaruawahia United and Unicol met at
Ngaruawahia in the last-but-one game of the Northern league
4th division subsidiary round.
Four large muddy patches down the centre of the
pitch, made more impossible by the application of gravelstrewn
top-soil during the week, were the embarrassment of
