passed the ball better and developed good attacking moves.

Ngaruawahia made two substitutions in the second

half and the team looked much better. Sharon Mabbet played

an improved game in defence, using her keeper with defensive

back-passes that were safe and accurate. The forwards were

given a lot of ball to work with from Robin Harris and

Adriana Kaui but the last touch before shooting often put the

ball too far ahead and the defence was safe.

The last goal came as Jo’s hat-trick, when she again

broke through. The keeper came out to cut down the

opportunity and Jo struck the ball between the keeper’s ankles

to see it roll on casually through the goal 3- 1 .

Lynette Karina, Ngaruawahia’s barefoot

winger, played well, although suffering from a cut toe. The

strikers enthusiasm caught them off-side a number of times.

Ngaruawahia only made partial use of the tonne of room

available to them in mid-field when all of the Hillcrest strikers

and halves were on attack.

The withdrawal of Fairfield No 2 team leaves only

Melville to play. This Saturday at 10 am, at the Ngaruawahia

H.S. sees a friendly between Hamilton Girls High and

Ngaruawahia. No doubt Ngaruawahia will not want to lose

any matches this year – even in friendlies. The date the local

girls have played 8, drawn 1, won 7, for 25 goals gained and 5

against – a good start for girls soccer at the school.

Northern League

Lost 1-2 away to Ngongotaha. Ngaruawahia could

not put away to goals that counted, having disallowed for

infringements.

First Division:

Lost 0-2 to Hamilton in a scrappy game that did little

for both teams. Jeff Coulshed, Hamilton’s volatile player

clashed in a running battle on the ball with Ngaruawahia’s

counterpart, George Sunnex, providing some excitement for

spectators. Both Hamilton goals came in the first spell.

Third Division:

Defeated Te Awamutu 3-0 away.

Ladies:

The “A” team predictably downed the “B” team but

by only 5 goals to nil. This helped Ngaruawahia “A” rectify

the goal difference between them and Hamilton – now coleaders

with Ngaruawahia having the better goal difference.

Challenge:

The Sunday challenge between Northern League and

a combined lst/3rd Division went 6-0 to the Northern League.

Second Chance Gone

Northern League Ngaruawahia-Affco United lost

their chance of 2nd place in the Northern League 4th division

on Saturday when they were defeated 2-1 at home by Taupo.

For the 3rd week in a row, Ngaruawahia had more

than their share of possession but lacked finishing ability in

front of the goal. The first, 30 minutes saw countless chances

go astray, each one adding to the growing frustration of the

home team. A good through ball by John Brown in the 20th

minute was picked up by Ken Murray who was unable to get

it past the advancing Taupo keeper; the rebound fell to Jeff

McLaughlan who somehow managed to miss the open goal

from close range.

The second half deteriorated into a very physical

encounter and a confused Ngaruawahia defence saw two goals

put past them. Ngaruawahia retaliated when John Brown

closed the goal difference with a fine header from a corner.

Five minutes later Brown again netted the ball, but

the referee ignored his linesman and awarded a goal kick. This

proved to be the last straw for the disheartened home team,

and soon after the final whistle was blown to leave the score at

Taupo 2 – Ngaruawahia-Affco 1.

High School Girls

Pae Brown (4) and Paula Douglas (3) lead the goalscoring

against Hamilton Girls High School at Ngaruawahia

on Saturday. Betsy Maxwell and Jenny Clow added one each

for the 9-0 win.

As a non-competition game, many of the reserve girls

were given a full run and they enjoyed the 60 minutes.

H.G.H.S., a late entry, was unable to enter in time for the

initial round and is playing friendlies in the place of the

withdrawn Fairfield No. 2 team.

With a full-strength squad this Saturday to meet

Melville, the girls are hoping for another win to claim the

competition before entering the knock-out round. Ace goalkeeper

cum winger Lyn Karina will replace Diane Fairey in

goal on Saturday with the regular squad members coming

back in after a one-game rest.

Under 16 Honours

Andrew Bell of the Ngaruawahia-Affco United

soccer club was selected to play in the Waikato under 16

squad. Andy plays wing for the club 1st division and full back

for the Ngaruawahia High School 11, which he also captains.

Ladies Reps.

Six members of the Ngaruawahia-Affco ladies A

soccer team have been named in the Waikato squad –

Elizabeth Gorman, Doreen Clancy, Jan Morris, Glenys

Fraser, Carolyn Anderson and Carol Legalais.

Junior Soccer

Ngaruawahia-Affco 9th grade ‘A’ defeated

Fairfield ‘A’ in the first round match for the Parker-

Hilton trophy at Ngaruawahia on Saturday.

Ngaruawahia took initiative from the start, but poor

finishing by the forwards and some good saves by the

Fairfield goalie kept them out until the 15th minute when

Eugene Patterson slipped through the defence and lobbed the

ball over the keeper.

In the second half, right wing Gavin Skewes

carried the ball down the sideline and centred to striker

David Tilstone who made no mistake from close

range. Eugene Patterson did the work for the third and

‘final goal but his shot was blocked by the Fairfield keeper.

The rebound fell to Malcolm Douglas who hit the ball low

into the far corner of the net.

Players to stand out for Ngaruawahia were

Gavin Skewes, Blair Aberhart and Glen Sterling.

Schoolgirl Soccer

An early goal from Karina Graves started Ngaruawahia’s

goal-rush against Fraser No 3 at Ngaruawahia on

Saturday morning. Ngaruawahia (Narra) had been narrow

victors over Fraser in their first encounter and a revamped

home team appeared to dominate much of the game at

Ngaruawahia.

Not one of the players in the Narra team failed to do

their best. The second goal, from Paula Douglas, brought up

the half time score. Jenny Clow and Betsy Maxwell (2)

netted in the second spell.

Mid-fielder Ann-Marie Wanakore worked herself

to a standstill and was well supported by Adriana Kaui at

centre-back. Adriana’s solid clearances gave Jenny Clow

and Karina Graves plenty to work with up front. Goal keeper

Diane Fairey had little to do as she was mostly well protected

by her backs, who were obviously under instruction not to let

the attack get anywhere near the goal. However she was called

on to make two fine saves.

Left back Robin Harris had her best game of the

year and was partnered by Diane Edmonds at right-back,

whose solid display cemented her position as a dependable
