midfield beat the defence and slammed the ball into the back

of the net, Huntly l United 0.

Chances were being missed left right and centre by

the Huntly forwards and it wasn’t until five minutes to

halftime that midfield player Donna Hepburn lobbed a ball

from about 20 metres out over the heads of the United

defence into the goal. Halftime score Huntly 2 United 0.

The second half had only been going five minutes

when Brenda Stuart, recent signing from Ngaruawahia scored

Thistle’s third goal. Huntly at this stage were all over the

opposition and were unlucky not to have scored on several

occasions.

The third goal was a bit of a scramble in the penalty

box before Marteene managed to get her foot to it and thump

it into the net to make the final score Huntly 4 United 0.

The Thistle keeper Rangi Troughear only touched

the ball once during the whole game showing the Thistle

defence were very sound, in particular Christine Towner, the

Thistle player of the day.

Other players to stand out were Karen Ruston who

played on the right wing, and Marg Robinson who played a

good game as centre back.

Next week they will find the game a lot harder when

they travel back to Ngaruawahia to play the number one team.

One aspect of ladies soccer that was noticed is the

number of coaches on the side line, not official, who scream

at the girls to do this and that. I think if these people were to

keep their mouths shut and let the girls get on with the game

it would be more interesting to watch.

Other results were Adidas Challenge trophy. Huntly

5 Matamata 0. Waikato 2nd division Unicol I Huntly 0.

NORTHERN LEAGUE

An Adidas Challenge Cup match against Tokoroa

away permitted coach Dave Hall to experiment with several

team positions. Tokoroa ran up 4 goals to Ngaruawahia 2.

Mike Liddle and Graeme Bowers scored for the visitors.

FIRST DIVISION

Ngaruawahia were expectedly overwhelmed by

Melville 6-1 at Galloway Park with Tony Armstrong and

George Paul being jointly responsible for Ngaruawahia

getting its one goal.

THIRD DIVISION

Waikeria’s goal-keeper Sampson singlehandedly

won the match against Ngaruawahia with a display

of brilliant saves to shut out any scoring attempt. Waikeria’s

single goal came early in the second half. Rod Hill missed an

open goal from three metres out in front to balance out the

penalty Waikeria missed in the first half.

LADIES A

13TH GRADE A

Northern League

Tony Armstrong netted United’s only goal against

Rotorua Suburbs who ran away with the game 6-1! United

contributed to Rotorua’s tally with three well-taken, owngoals

from Graham Bowers and Tim Coyne 2. Half-time

score 0-3.

1st Division

Cambridge proved too strong for United with goals

from Graham Took 2, Steven Dicks and Steven Moore. Glen

Solomon of United replied from the penalty spot for a 1-4

score-line. Although Cambridge out shot United, the home

team were always in with 4 chance.

3rd division

Rod Hill celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday by

being given his marching orders in the game against

Cambridge. Trailing 2-3 at the turn, and having made the

gross error of using both subs too early, United’s strength

went down to nine men before they won 6-3. Goals were

from Staf Magee 3, Ben Henkel (penalty), Ricky Duffull

and Trevor McLaughlan.

Ladies A

Carol Legalis made the only goal in United’s 1-0

win over Huntly. The Huntly ladies soccer team were

defeated 1 goal to nil by Ngaruawahia Affco No 1. at

Ngaruawahia’s Centennial Park last Sunday.

This game was played in ideal conditions and followed

by a fair crowd was very entertaining to watch with

both teams trying to open the scoring.

Ngaruawahia Affco found the Thistle defence very

tight as did Huntly find out at the other end.

A scoreless draw would have been a better result as

both teams played attractive football. But after 15 minutes in

the second half the inevitable happened when Ngaruawahia

Affco broke through the Thistle defence. To make it

Ngaruawahia 1 Huntly 0.

For Thistle, as a team, it was a disappointing result,

because both teams were lying second equal on points -

behind Hamilton.

The Huntly team’s player of the day Brenda Stuart

played a great game on the wing so also did Karen Ruston,

the skipper, playing on the other wing. The Thistle defence of

Betty Dixon, Marg Robinson, Christine Towner and Kay

Simpson are finally starting to knit together as a unit which

the opposition are finding hard to penetrate.

Our (the Huntly) forwards and midfield are

improving with every game if only they would pass the ball

more often.

Ladies B

An improved performance by the girls saw them

going down only 0-1 to Unicol, after holding them for much

of the game.

13th grade

A. team lost 3-5 to Fairfield. B. team lost 2-3 to St.

Andrews.

11th grade

After a scoreless first half, and suffering the

effrontery of being described as a mediocre team by

opposition adults, United netted through David Bright and

Darren Allison 2, to win 3-1 against Marist B.

9th grade

B. team lost 0-3 in a friendly against Nawton. A

team (Charlies Angels) defeated Nawton 2-0.
