Another Hat Trick

The Huntly Press

Wednesday September 7th, 1977

Waikato 1st Division Subsidiary

John Brown of Ngaruawahia-

Affco United 1st division soccer team

scored his second hat-trick in three

games when playing at Porritt Stadium

against Hamilton Wanderers in the

Waikato 1st Division Subsidiary

competition.

Prospects of a good game did

not look bright as the Ngaruawahia

team looked at the field they were to

play on. However, when they looked

across at the number one pitch that the

Cornwall and Wanderers Northern

League teams were to kick off on, they

were more heartened. United’s squad

was almost identical with that of the

last two games in which they notched

up wins of 8-1 and 2-0.

Wanderers played throughout

the game with ten players and played

well enough to be up 2-0 within twenty

minutes of play starting. They scored

from an in-swinging corner that Bell

got his hand to but only managed to

parry it into the roof of the net. A

break-away saw Wanderers second goal

that was well hit from 20 metres out.

However Ngaruawahia had the

majority of the play with promising

moves breaking down within attacking

distance due, in part, to the mud

patches at crucial spots. The United

forwards laid off the ball to the halves

following through on many occasions

but solid goal-keeping by the

Wanderers goalie kept the visitors out.

It was only going to be time

before United broke through to score,

and Wanderers realised this by trying to

urge their team into a greater goal lead.

Exactly one minute after Wanderers

second goal (21st minute) a good move

from Jason Cargo to John Brown put

Neil Gorman through for a sure shot

past the advancing keeper. Two

minutes later a boomer of a shot from

John Brown was handled in the area

for Ray Guy to bring the score up to 2-

2 by placing the ball high and to the left

of the keeper.

The second spell was barely

two minutes old when Brian

McLuskie worked the ball down to the

left corner-flag before cutting it back to

Eddie Carrigan, who promptly

chipped it back infield to catch the

Wanderers defence moving the wrong

way. John Brown received the ball

with his back to the goal, juggled it

over his shoulder to make a powerful

looping drive in from the edge of the 18

-yard line.

In the 53rd minute Wanderers

gained another break-away to level the

scores again, in what seemed to be a

movement that involved three off-side

strikers.

In the 60th minute Mike

Liddle replaced Cargo, and in his first

touch of the ball set Brown up for a

scorching 30-metre drive that the

Wanderer’s keeper’s agility pushed

wide. In due time (69th minute) John

Brown gained his second goal when a

Steve Williams corner scudded low

across the penalty area to Brown who

was lurking deep and who first-timed

his successful shot to put United ahead

4-3.

As a direct result of the loose

control the referee had on the game,

Malcolm Sowerby was tackled from

behind in the 77th minute and was

injured off with a dislocated knee. Play

was held up for eight minutes. Neither

a stretcher or St Johns was available, a

situation that did not endear the

Wanderers officials to the United

players or fans.

Philip Bullivant, replacing

Sowerby, immediately had the

Wanderers defence in a tangle and

contributed to an angled 30-metre drive

by Liddle that the keeper did well to

parry, but a swift moving Neil Gorman

got to the ball before the keeper could

recover to make it 5-3.

Wanderers looked dangerous

on only one other occasion in the match

– this from a corner. However Stu Bell

came out and cut out the ball well.

John Brown had the last say of the

match when, after being pushed in the

back, elbowed, and being hacked on the

back of the legs (all in the space of five

strides) struck a 35-metre direct spot

kick along the grass into the far corner

for the final tally of 6-3 to Ngaruawahia

-Affco United.

United has 6 points from their

3 matches with Unicol to meet, who

have gained 2 points from 2 matches.

With the bye this weekend, United will

be playing an Under-19 team from their

club plus invited players, before their

final game against Unicol.

Super Star Strikes Again

Waikato 3rd Division

While John Brown was

gaining his hat-trick for Ngaruawahia-

Affco United’s first division at Porritt

Stadium, super-star McGee was

basking in his hat-trick of goals against

Fraser at Galloway Park.

Steve McLaughlan and Tony

Armstrong added to the tally in the

third division match to give United a 5-

3 win. United nearly threw it away after

being up 4-0 at the turn with Fraser

coming back strongly in the second

half.

The second division match

against Te Kuiti was called off when Te

Kuiti failed to turn up, and the players

travelled through to watch the first and

third division forays

Bruce McIntosh Seals

Win

The Huntly Press

Wednesday September 14th, 1977

Waikato 2nd Division

After trailing 0-1 in their

Waikato 2nd division match against Te

Kuiti, Ngaruawahia-Affco drew back to

1-1 with an equaliser from Mike

Liddle and then took the lead in the

second half when Bruce McIntosh

slotted home a rebound off the keeper

for United’s 2-1 win.

Joey Wright was substituted

early in the match when he was injured,

trying to prevent Te Kuiti’s goal, by

Mike Liddle. Rod Hill in goal for

United was called upon on one

occasion to brilliantly finger-tip wide a

hard angle shot that should have gone

into the net.

Tom Morgan set up some

fine runs with Mel Riches getting

through more work than he was

expected to do, especially in situations

where he was faced with three

attackers.

Lindsay and Phillip Bullivant

worked hard but never really got

completely intot he game. Billy

McCaig on the left wing had a few

chances but had difficulty getting his

left foot into shooting gear.

Mead Cup to

Ngaruawahia-Affco

The Huntly Press

Wednesday September 21st, 1977

Waikato 1st Division Subsidiary

Ngaruawahia-Affco United

soccer club ended their 1977 season by

winning the Mead Cup in a subsidiary

competition of the Waikato first

division.

Accumulating 19 goals for and

four against in their four matches, a

high note was achieved for their

manager, Hans Czichy, who is

currently preparing to move with his

employment to Australia.

.At the top of the table with a

maximum of 6 points, United met

Unicol who had accumulated four

points from their three games. United

had to draw or win to be assured of the

trophy as it was mathematically

possible for Tokoroa and Unicol to

overtake United.

Played at the University, one

goal-mouth was found to soft and

deceptive, with United defending this

end into the sun with no advantage

from the cross-wind. Stu Bell, in goal

for United, was called upon once to go

down at the feet of two Unicol forwards

to smother a possible shot. Despite

having Ken Murray keeping the

pressure away from the keeper, Stu had

a confident 90 minutes in goal and this
