and the ground heavy.

Philip Jerry drove in the first

goal for Ngaruawahia when the solid

four-man defence line of St Pauls let a

ball slip through and Jerry was driving

through to put the ball away. St Pauls

equalised from a well-constructed

through ball and Ngaruawahia found

themselves, at half time, still lucky to be

in the game.

A slight rearrangement at the

turn, with Kelly coming on for Farrell

and a shuffling of positions, saw

Ngaruawahia drive in seven more. Kani

Te Wiata had moved out to the right

wing with the halfback line adding

Kelly; Barakat moving from halves to

backs.

The switch brought immediate

results with Te Wiata netting a fine

oblique shot from a good Jerry pass.

Alistair Bell maintained his good

scoring momentum with one, and Kerry

Barakat topped off the eight.

Perhaps the hardest of the

competition to come is Hamilton Boys

High and this match will probably lower

the Ngaruawahia 7-1 goal scoring

average. Grant Prendergast (Jumbo)

has shown improvement in each game

and should provide formidable

opposition to Boys High strikers.

Ngaruawahia High School

in Double Draws

Both Ngaruawahia High

School soccer teams had their progress

in the Secondary Schoolboy soccer

competition slowed by Hamilton Boys

High on Saturday with draws.

The third division were down 3

-4 with goals from Peter Harrop,

Grant Cathro and Andrew Bell, and

with only a few minutes remaining it

was the 18 metre drive of Glen

Solomon that earned the boys a match

point.

The second division squad had

a similar situation, again with Hamilton

Boys High leading 3-2 with only

minutes remaining. Philip Jerry had

opened the scoring from halfway with a

lob shot, with Dean Haggie netting the

second to have Ngaruawahia trailing 2-3

at the turn. Captain Alistair Bell

received a pass from the wing to earn

his team’s single point in the dying

stages.

Results: 3rd div: Boys High 4,

Ngaruawahia 4. 2nd div: Ngaruawahia

3, Boys High 3.

Abysmal Display of Football

Victory to Affco Rangers but

points to Ngaruawahia United! That was

the story when Ngaruawahia defeated

Affco 7-0 in the Waikato 3rd division

38

soccer competition.

Affco commenced the game

with eight men, that later dropped to

seven when injury dropped one man,

and almost outplayed a full United team.

Affco provided the sparkle as they

played 100 percent football for the full

90 minutes while United adopted their

ineffectual “kick-and-rush” technique.

Affco, despite being outnumbered, were

seldom pressured for the ball, and were

allowed to control play for sustained

periods.

At one stage “Paddle Paws”

Dennis was nearly caught napping and

pushed away a snap shot from Affco for

United to clear.

The match against Teachers

this week promises to be a walkover for

Teachers if the same style of play is

adopted by United.

Ngaruawahia H.S. Still

Undefeated

The Ngaruawahia High School

first 11 soccer team remains undefeated

after six games in the Waikato

secondary school’s second division

competition. Four wins and two draws,

places them one point below

competition leaders Otorohanga, and

one point clear of Boys High.

Otorohanga came to

Ngaruawahia as the favourites, almost

assured of two match points, and had to

be content on Saturday with a 2-2 score.

Captain Alistair Bell scored twice for

the home team and with a little more

finishing could have beaten the visitors.

Ngaruawahia must go into the

second series of games as favourites for

the title, as long as they do not drop a

single match point. Their first hurdle is

meeting Fairfield at home this Saturday

at 9.15. The previous encounter

favoured Ngaruawahia 5-2.

2nd 11 Fall to St Pauls

The second 11 (3rd division)

were trounced 0-7 by St Pauls, who

fielded many players from their first

division squad. The Ngaruawahia team

height averaged half that of St Pauls.

David White, Ngaruawahia’s keeper,

excelled himself under the pressure that

was put upon him.

U/13 Soccer Reps to Play

Ngaruawahia

The Waikato under-13 soccer

team will play a Ngaruawahia under-13

squad at Centennial Park, Ngaruawahia,

this Sunday, July 11, at 2.30 p.m.

This will be an excellent

opportunity for the Ngaruawahia boys to

put their skills against a representative

team, and to find out how much junior

football has progressed over the two

years it has been in existence in

Ngaruawahia.

The four primary schoolboy

teams will undoubtedly expand over the

following seasons and provide players

for the higher grade teams.

The Borough Council have

commenced the erection of changing

sheds on the ground and the United

Club have now the clearance to begin

the erection of their clubrooms nearby.

Ngaruawahia High School

Defeat Te Kuiti

The Ngaruawahia 1st 11 High

School soccer team continued its

unbeaten run of games in the Waikato

Secondary Schools competition with a

hard fought away win over Te Kuiti.

Having taken Te Kuiti 5-1 in the home

game, Ngaruawahia was determined not

to spend three hours travelling time on

Saturday, without something to show for

it.

For the first 50 minutes

Ngaruawahia pressured the Te Kuiti

goal, but near misses and some steady

keeping kept the score at 0-0.

Ngaruawahia keeper G. Prendergast

had little to do but keep tabs on the

game and supported his fullbacks in all

situations.

The first netted ball came when

Phillip Jerry received a pass from Phil

Van Houtte and wove through to score,

but had it disallowed by the referee who

ruled the initial pass offside. The

travelling team were getting worried

when three-quarters of the game passed

with no score, although a tonne of

territorial advantage was theirs. Then

Alistair Bell clicked and fired home

three well-hit goals in the last 15

minutes for the 3-0 win to Ngaruawahia.

2nd 11 win over Fairfield

Having taken Fairfield C

soccer team 4-0 in the first encounter,

2nd 11 Ngaruawahia let them take the

initiative with an early goal before Glen

Solomon, Jeff Gray, Grant Cathro

and Alistair Bell (2) sewed up the

match for a 5-1 win away at Fairfield.

Ngaruawahia United

Wins Bruising Match

The big soccer match in

Ngaruawahia on Saturday was that

between the two first division teams of

Ngaruawahia United and Cameron,

played at Hopu Hopu, Cameron’s home

ground. The previous encounter had led

to a 2-1 win to United.

The game commenced as it was

destined to continue. Cameron
