BRUCE McINTOSH

Bruiser or Fifi was born in the Ngaruawahia

Nursing Home (which they promptly closed down after they saw

him). He played Rugby League since 6 years old and was in the

NZ Under-15 League side that met New South Wales.

He started with the Green machine in ' 7 8 a n d w a s

a m e m b e r o f t h e victorious 3rd Division side when it won

the League.

A building Constructor by trade he majored in

Apple & Pear Board boxes, moving on to specialize in

outhouses. He now works on matchboxes for Bryant & May.

He is a speedy player who delights in zipping down the

wing, ball at toe, and just before reaching the goal-line he

scoops it up and dives over for the touchdown!

His other interests include squash ( t h o s e

t h i n g s t h a t l o o k l i k e pumpkins) and is a fair pool player

(when he can keep his feet dry).

CHARLES GORMAN (Jnr)

Affectionately known as Chas’ he had a schoolboy

career in Rugby League as a winger and as a half-back for

Ngaruawahia and Waikato. He tasted soccer at Ngaruawahia

High and has been a Green Machinist ever since.

He used to be 6' tall in his teens until his father had

him practice-heading a medicine ball. He was adept and

skilled with both feet, finding no difficulty in tripping

over either and was a regular recipient of the Broken A***

Trophy every year since its inception.

As a mechanical fitter he spent time w o r k i n g o n

g a r a g e f o r e c o u r t s cleaning the few windshields he could

reach, in the Horotiu Fitters Shop as teabag boy and in the

Mines as coal cleaner.

He has served the Club over the years in administrative

positions across the board and his chair-bashing days have

become obvious as certain parts o f h i s a n at o m y h a ve

r e s h a pe d themselves.

SANDY MacDONALD

Alias McBandy or Crayfish Legs started his soccer

at Huntly College in 1958 as Fullback/Goalkeeper and moved

on to keep the nets at the Hamilton Teachers College from

1963 to 1965 continually confusing the opposition with his lillywhite

legs into thinking there was another set of uprights to the

goal.

While at Teachers College he turned down offers from

Claudelands Rovers and Wanderers who wanted him to play a

specialist role as a corner flag.

Huntly Thistle took pity on him over the next three

years and gave him a warm spot in goal for their senior side

which played in the Auckland B competition.

He came to Narra in 1969 as an o r i g i n a l

m e m b e r a n d b e c a m e involved in Club administration,

coaching, training and playing. It was in 1964 that he shared

Player of the Year with Chas Gorman (collectively known as Abbot

& Costello).

Sandy has managed to stay injury-free since 1958

due to a cunning ploy of goalkeeping behind the net! He

occasionally grows a beard and ends up looking like a chorus

girl in the Muppet Show.

One of the projects he claims he never should have

started happened in 1977 when the weekly club bulletin "Centre

Spot" commenced, died b r i e fl y f o r t h r e e y e a r s

t h e n resurrected itself to be later taken over by Glen Gray

and Brian Webb.

This year (1993) is the first time in 36 years that he

has not taken the field in a competition match but claims

the thrill of emulating Gladdis Gray (Alias Sideline Sam) when, in

1992, he played several Waikato 1st Division games with his

sons Andre and Regan.

PHILLIP HUNTER

Phil answered to the name of Wurzel (a wurzel is a

type of turnip), and was given that name as he would

turnip to every game of soccer in N arra. P hil resembled

the lead drummer Floyd of the Muppet Show and had a

distinguished career as a Rugby League Schoolboy Rep' until he

ripened into an old 13 year-old.

He played Cricket for the Lower W a i k a t o

S c h o o l b o y s a n d h a s represented Waikato at Senior Golf

(with a modest handicap of 36). His other handicap is hitting the

ball! If he can't get a medium-sized soccer ball into a 192

square-foot goalmouth what could he do with a golfball?

He followed his cousin Micky Dribble into the Narra

soccer scene in 1978 while working as a mynah (he was often

seen cadging bread-crumbs and chasing after the other birds!).

He was born in Huntly and raised (with a jack) in

Pukemiro. He was a very capable goalkeeper. He learned his

keeping skills in the mines. Whenever a shot-firer set

off the charges he would catch the lumps of flying coal to

take home for his mum.

He was a tireless worker on the field, like a terrier always

chasing the ball, sometimes picking it up in his mouth,

scampering over to the goalposts and cocking a leg!

THE DUFFULLS

Alias the Three Stooges, these lads are collectively

known as Duffell Boy, Duffull Bag and Duffull Coat.

DAN: Dan the man or Daggy Boy.

CHRIS: Pee Wee.

RICK: Tricky Ricky.

Three of these lads were born in Ngaruawahia while

the other wasn't and, like most lads, learned their trade in

the hurly burly of Rugby League football and still use League

t a c k l e s a g a i n s t u n s u s p e c ti n g opponents - one under,

one over, and one up the Khyber!

Split up to evade capture, Dan joined Cameron AFC while

Chris and Rick attached themselves to AFFCo Rangers.

All three continued their nefarious occupations

disguised as freezing workers where they were often found in
