Old Values

Ngaruawahia is well known as a family-friendly club by all

who visit, and we wish to maintain that ambiance.

Times have changed a good deal over the years, but the

old values still mean something. Like many clubs there is a hard core

of people who work behind the scenes to provide the teams with

the things that help the club run.

There are those who search out funds for essentials,

groundsmen to prepare the pitches, bar staff to accommodate the

thirsty, kitchen workers to assuage the pangs of hunger, those who

clean up, and those who faithfully and positively support the club

with an eye on taking us back to the top of our leagues.

All players are a part of this positive ethic, showing loyalty

and a desire, on the pitch, to repay the efforts of those off the pitch.

There are a few simple tips that we are all aware of, but

often forget in the heat of battle. . .

It is a proven waste of time arguing with match officials’

decisions, as it makes you a marked man for any future decisions

they may be called upon to make.

Obscenities and swearing is very common these days, but using

it on the field may well result in a yellow (or red) card, which

puts a dent in your wallet and often means pressure on your

team members when they have to play with a man short. I am

sure they will not love you for it.

Retaliation is a natural reaction to a bad foul and, as brassed off

as you feel, it’s still your marching orders while the perpetrator

smiles and waves you goodbye.

Annoy the opposition by all means (within the rules), but never

rubbish your team-mates - it puts them off their game and they

will be less than happy with you.

When things are not going as you hoped, don’t drop your head.

Ninety minutes is plenty of time to right things. The three things

that coaches and supporters appreciate are (1) plenty of bottle,

(2) never say die, and (3) discipline.

Finding money to provide the things we need is always a

major problem. For those who are employed, try tapping your

employer to sponsor you for the season. Every little helps.

Bins are provided in the changing sheds and around the

club - so it’s good shooting practice if you can hit them with your

rubbish, and the cleaners will love you for it.

Let’s make this a season we can look back on with pride.

- Glen Gray, Club Captain
