Ngaruawahia to Play Two International Teams

Not many football clubs can boast two

international matches as a way to start a new year.

Ngaruawahia united has scored a major coup by securing

games against Samoa U-20 and Solomon Islands U-20 as

both countries prepare for the OFC U-20 Championship in

Auckland, New Zealand with the ultimate prize being

qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada 2007.

New Zealand U-20 is heavily favoured to win

their way to Canada but with Solomon Islands proving a

very worthy and competitive obstacle. Perhaps the Kiwis

will not have it all their own way.

Solomon Island Football Federation Technical

Director Eddie Ngava will be hoping Airton Andrioli and his

team will be flying for the tournament and we extend

them a warm Ngaruawahia welcome.

Samoa U-20 will face a difficult task with their

preparation programme only just coming together.

Damian Fonoti of Waikato FC has yet to confirm his

availability but will be familiar to the Ngaruawahia United

faithful. Damian is a graduate of Mount Albert Grammar

School under the tutelage of Kevin Fallon and is also the

cousin of Australian and Everton midfield great Tim Cahill.

Of course, from a Ngaruawahia United

perspective, these matches represent a chance for our

players to test themselves against the best players from

two nations within the Oceana Football Confederation

football community. It is a rare opportunity and one to be

savoured by the players.

I urge our players to give an honest account of

themselves and to enjoy the chance to play top level

football. These are your international caps (so to speak)

and many footballers in your position would be envious of

this opportunity. Always play hard but fair in the spirit of

goodwill and competition.
