29th April 1972

Fielding the strongest team possible against their

skilled opponents, Ngaruawahia met Hamilton in the 3rd round of

competition.

Man-for -man Ha m il t on wer e m or e ski ll ed than

their host s but this wa s not to upset or dictate to Ngaruawahia.

Confident in their defence, Ngaruawahia for war ds harried

and probed and brought off an early goal from the boot of

Tony Armstrong from 10 yards out.

Ha m i l t on wer e st un g into retaliation, building up a

slow and deliberate attack but found that the Ngaruawahia

defence was like a brick wall. Ever y t i m e t h e y bea t on e

defender, another was there. The few times that a quick attack by

Hamilton moved past the advancing keeper, R e x N i gh t i n ga l e ,

t h e y foun d d e fen der s T od d, M a r k a n d M a c D o n a l d

blocking any further progress.

Lon g Ha mi l t on sh ot s lifted well over the bar;

through ball s wer e col lected easily by Nightingale and the

two occasions on which Hamilton thought they had the defence

beaten, manof-the-match Steven Mark materialised to clear the

b a l l .

George Sunnex goaled from 35 yards out with his shot

having "goal" written all over it from the time it was kicked.

This ended the first half.
