Wanderers and United

facing tough weekend

Hamilton Wanderers and Ngaruawahia United play

for their promotion playoff lives in round 22 of Northern

League soccer today.

It is reward or rejection for Ngaruawahia at

Papatoetoe AFC today, kick-off 2.45pm. A win would get

them the second division title and into the promotion playoffs,

while a loss could see them miss on both.

"It's a very difficult situation but we just have to be

confident that we can go out and win it," captain Matt

Williams said.

Ngaruawahia have scored 16 goals in their past three

games. Papatoetoe have not lost since July 10.

Wanderers miss out

while Ngaruawahia left waiting

By SCOTT PRESTON

Ngaruawahia missed their chance to seal the second

division league title, losing 1-0 to new leaders Papatoetoe AFC

at Murdoch Park in Auckland, and could miss out on the

promotion playoff.

Third-placed North Force play bottom-ranked

Manukau City in a catch-up game on Saturday, a North Force

loss or draw enough to keep Ngaruawahia second and with a

shot at first division.

"We can just keep our fingers

crossed," Ngaruawahia coach Jeff Coulshed said.

A goalkeeping error from a Papatoetoe free kick in

the 50th minute accounted for the game's only

goal. Ngaruawahia had two shots cleared off the line as they

attacked in the closing minutes.

Late goals costly for Melville

By: PRESTON Scott

As if the challenge of avoiding automatic relegation

was not difficult enough, Melville United are not helping

themselves.

Melville gave up 78th and 88th minute goals and

squandered a two-goal second half lead to draw 3-3 with East

Coast Bays in Northern League premier division soccer at

Gower Park in Hamilton on Saturday.

Level 1-1 at halftime, midfielder Josh Billman scored

minutes after the resumption, then L J Pijnenburg scored his

second on a curling left-foot free-kick in the 57th minute as

Melville were on track for just their fourth win of the season.

Starting with Friday's decision by New Zealand

Soccer to reverse Melville's loss to Onehunga Sports on

August 21, then the two-goal buffer on Saturday, Melville

appeared to be finally dancing with fortune.

Instead, it was more of the same for coach Chris

Smith and his players.

Melville sank back in defence in the last half-hour,

allowing East Coast to play at them with almost 100 per cent

possession.

"If we had won, you could have said we would be in

the playoff," Smith said. "Up 3-1, we should've won that

game."

Strikers Nathan Holten and Gordon Glen Watson,

defenders Wayne Bates and Richard Harris, keeper Ed

Trubshoe and midfielder Jeremy Prasad had outstanding

games.

Melville host Waitakere City at Wintec in Hamilton

on Friday night, at 8pm, and travel to Mangere United on

Sunday in their last two catch-up games.

* Hamilton Wanderers ended 2004 third in first

division with a 1-0 win over Three Kings United at Porritt

Stadium on Saturday. Stu Watene scored the game's only goal,

tapping in after Darryl Gibbs had beat a defender and

goalkeeper one-on-one.

* Watching results did not play out the

way Ngaruawahia United wanted on Saturday. Needing thirdplaced

North Force to draw or lose to Manukau City to hold

their place in the second division promotion

playoff, Ngaruawahia were denied as the Force prevailed 1-0

in Whangarei.

Ngaruawahia will accompany fellow Waikato teams

Cambridge and Claudelands Rovers in the second division in

2005.

Claudelands dominate

Force Three's squad

New Zealand representative Anne Ormrod was the

most notable inclusion in the Force Three squad of 20 named

yesterday for soccer's National Women's League.

Ormrod is currently in the US with the national

women's team --- the Swanz.

The midfielder played her club football for

Claudelands Rovers in the Northern League women's premier

division, under Force Three head coach Grant Hastings, but

lives in Tauranga, attending Tauranga Girls' College. She was

chosen for the national team on September 22 and played in

the Swanz's 5-0 loss on Monday.

Ormrod is one of five Tauranga-based players in the

Force Three squad, along with Emma Butler, Dana Braunias

and Tarryn Laing, who all played for Claudelands in 2004,

plus Tauranga Girls' Tessa Seivers.

With 12 players, Claudelands dominate the squad,

which also includes New Zealand secondary schools player

Katie Hoyle and former NZ under-19 rep Katherine Whittle.

"There's a few experienced players there, like Terri

Comber and Andrea Timings, plus some exciting young

players, who are very good technically," said Hastings.

Force Three finished sixth in the past two seasons,

going winless in 2003 with a 0-1-5 record and 1-0-6 in 2002.

The women's national league kicks off on Saturday,

but Force Three do not open their season until October 16,

hosting United Soccer at Weka St, kick-off 2pm. Other home

games include on October 30 against Capital Soccer at Links

Ave, Tauranga, and on November 14 hosting Soccer 2 in

Hamilton.

Force Three squad: Kelly Aitken, Dana Braunias,

Emma Butler, Jo Chambers, Selena Holmes, Katie Hoyle,

Katherine Whittle, Tarryn Laing, Kirsten Moore, Cherie

Newman, Anne Ormrod, Lucy Thompson (Claudelands), Terri

Comber, Andrea Timings, Tanya Wakefield (Melville),

Stephanie Bell, Stacey Smith (Cambridge), Lynda Hemming

(Eastern Suburbs), Kirsten Henkel (Ngaruawahia), Tessa

Seivers (Tauranga Girls' College).
