Ngaruawahia Facing Former Cup Finalists

by Bruce Holloway - Waikato Times, April 24th, 2002

It is axiomatic of Chatham

Cup soccer that the “wrong” team

often wins.

But it is really odd when a

Waikato team which has yet to win a

match this season finds itself

entering a first-round tie against a

former Cup finalist and flagship club

from another city as hot favourite.

That’s the situation

tomorrow when Ngaruawahia united

host 1989 finalists Rotorua City at

Centennial Park.

While the Green Machine

have hardly moved out of first gear

this season with two draws and a

loss, Rotorua City have been on a

stead downward slide since their

brief bout of Cup fever 13 years ago.

Rotorua showed little sign of

being capable of causing even the

mildest of upsets at the Cambridge

Tournament this year, but

Ngaruawahia coach Mark Cooper is

nevertheless wary.

“It’s always difficult against

an unknown entity where they have a

lot of history in the club and nothing

to lose,” he says.

“But the scary part is that we

are favourites. I think we need to

show a lot more pride and passion.”

Cooper will be looking for

big games from nuggety midfielder

Phil Stables and centreback Jared

Williams tomorrow, but finishing -

or lack of it - may be his biggest

problem.

In the only other home tie

Waikato Unicol will have a difficult

job subduing a talented Mangere

United team which leads the

northern league second division.

Given their excellent goalscoring

potential Cambridge are the

best placed of the Waikato Clubs to

cause a boil-over in travelling to

premier leaguers Three Kings, who

are bottom of their league, having

leaked 12 goals in four matches.

Metro Motors Melville

United have a tough task away to

Fencibles United who have already

beaten them once this season and are

now captained by one of their former

stalwarts, Greg Larsen. Larsen is

relishing the chance to secure a

second successive victory over his

old club.

“I’m expecting a very tight

match,” he said. “Melville look like

a good young side but we are also

steadily improving. Anything could

happen on the day.”

Local 2002 Chatham Cup results for April 25th.

Ngaruawahia 4, Rotorua City 2

Waikato Unicol 1, Mangere United 6

Three Kings 4, Cambridge 1

Fencibles 0, Melville 1
