Our Sporting Best Honoured

Waikato Times

Sandy MacDonald (Service to Sport), Trish Sanson (Administrator of the Year), Jeff Coulshed (Coach of the Year) and Matt

Williams (Team of the Year - Ngaruawahia United Premier Soccer Team) - proud sporting winners in district awards.

Last week’s Waikato

District Sports Awards honoured

the best that sport produces in our

region.

The seventh annual

awards, staged at the Kimiora hall,

Turangawaewae Marae, saw eight

district winners named. They will

go on to the Waikato Regional

Awards at Hamilton Gardens next

Wednesday.

Fifty-one nominations

were received for the eight awards.

Judges were ex-NZ netball

administrator Monica Leggart,

former All Black Brent Anderson

and ex-NZ Women’s hockey

representative Sue McLeish.

Guest speaker was World

Single Sculls rowing champion

Rod Waddell, who shared some of

his experiences leading up to his

1998 World Championship

competition.

Apart from the more usual

sporting codes, the awards also

promote less prominent sporting

interests.

This year, for the first

time, rowing (Mercer Club),

shearing (Raglan Western Shears),

touch rugby ((Touch Waikato) and

basketball (Huntly Association)

were represented by nominations.

Huntly, Ngaruawahia, Raglan and

Te Kauwhata were all represented

by entries.

Those selected to go to the

regional awards were:

Sandy MacDonald

(Service to Sport);

Turangawaewae Rugby League

and Cultural Club (Club of the

Year); Trish Sanson - Ruawaro

Tennis Club (Administrator of the

Year); Ngaruawahia United AFC
