Club hope for pledge pay-off

By: ANDERSON Ian

Don't forget to pay.

A fundraising venture begun by the Waikato Times

will get the Ngaruawahia United soccer club to their

Chatham Cup semifinal in Dunedin -- but the club would

appreciate it if all the money pledged was in the bank before

they head south.

Club president Maxine Williams said the club has

been delighted with the response from backers after the

Times pledged $1000 for Ngaruawahia to fly to meet

Dunedin Technical on August 16.

But the publicity surrounding their fairytale Cup

run has rebounded slightly.

"We've been running raffles to raise funds and

people have told our sellers that we've got plenty of money,"

she said.

"In theory we've got enough -- but we'd like to get

the money pledged to pay for fares," Williams said.

String of injuries casts a cloud over Ngaruawahia

By: ANDERSON Ian

Physiotherapists may be the busiest people

in Ngaruawahia this week.

The Ngaruawahia United side who will meet

Dunedin Technical in Sunday's Chatham Cup semifinal have

a worrying injury list after Saturday's 1-0 home loss to Three

Kings in the Northern League division one soccer

competition.

Striker Nikolai Helwig is in doubt with a groin

strain which saw him complete only half of Saturday's loss

while Scott Granville, Andy Bell and Kerry Hawkes are

also in a race to be fit for the semifinal.

Ngaruawahia's loss didn't upset coach Jeff

Coulshed, who felt his side competed well in a competitive

match settled by a first-half strike from the away side.

Former All White uneasy over selection

By: ANDERSON Ian

Former All White Brian Hayes may be an unwilling

participant in Sunday's Chatham Cup soccer semifinal.

Hayes is wanted by Ngaruawahia United coach Jeff

Coulshed for the trip south to face Dunedin Technical but the

national league veteran is agonising over his availability.

Hayes can usually only play home matches

for Ngaruawahia in the Northern League division one

competition on Saturdays as the Waikato University student

works at the campus on Saturday mornings and doesn't train

regularly with the side.

With the semifinal being played on Sunday, Hayes is

able to play but feels his presence in the side may upset his

team-mates.

"I don't want to put the team in a bad position on

such an important day for them," Hayes said.

"I feel it's not really fair to other players if I play on

what should be their day in the sun. I wouldn't want the same

situation to happen to me if I was a player missing out."

Coulshed said with many of his players struggling

with injuries, he would like to have the experienced Hayes in

his squad, even if he was to start the match on the bench.

The Melville United captain in last summer's national

soccer league, Hayes could play at centre-back but is more

likely to be used in the centre of midfield with Coulshed

unwilling to split up his key defensive pairing of Aaron Kingi

and Marcus Traill.

Hayes, who has both Chatham Cup winners' and

losers' medals from his tenure with Waikato United, hinted he

would leave the final decision up to Coulshed.

"He's the coach, he has to go with the side he feels

and he has to wear the flak."

LOVE'S SKIN DEEP

Ngaruawahia's assistant managers Ricky Duffull and Emmett Connolly

have shouldered the responsibility

for helping publicise their club by visiting a tattooist.
