Town firms get soccer ball rolling

Welcome to raffle town.

Ngaruawahia, after making the last four of soccer's

Chatham Cup, has gone fund-raising crazy to get the team to

Dunedin.

Club president Maxine Williams says it could need

closer to $15,000 than the $10,000 first suggested to fly the

Northern League first division team south on August 16 to play

Dunedin Technical.

And spurred on by a $1000 donation from the Waikato

Times, town businesses have queued up with offers of cash and

vouchers.

Now club members must sell a host of raffle tickets to

make sure the vouchers help the fund.

Mrs Williams said she "just about cried" this week

after children at Waipa School, across the road from her club,

raised $50.

But it's back to bread and butter stuff

tomorrow. Ngaruawahia have a Northern League home match

against South Auckland Rangers.

Albany may host soccer showpiece

Albany's North Harbour Stadium appeals as the

likely venue for this year's Chatham Cup soccer final -- but

the decision may be made after next month's semifinals.

The stadium's general manager Graeme Running

said they and Soccer New Zealand (SNZ) were interested in

hosting the knockout Cup final there and a date in late

September or early October would suit.

But SNZ and stadium management may wait to see

wheher Ngaruawahia or Dunedin Technical reach the final

before setting a date.

Waikato's Cup heroes Ngaruawahia United meet

Technical away and Central United host fellow Auckland side

Metro in the August 15-16 semifinal encounters.

"If Ngaruawahia got through, we'd want to host a

final on a weekend when Waikato didn't have a home NPC

rugby match and get a whole bunch of Mooloo supporters

making the trip up to support them," Running said.

Meanwhile, the Ngaruawahia club want their

Sunday semifinal match in Dunedin brought forward a day.

Club president Maxine Williams

said Ngaruawahia would prefer the match to be played on

August 15, because that would allow the team and 50

supporters, who have plans to travel to Dunedin, to celebrate

after the game.

The club, which feared it could be priced out of the

cup after being drawn away to Dunedin, has been rescued

after a Waikato Times challenge to businesses to help with

funds.

In the latest fundraising development, the Waikato

District Council has matched the Times' $1000 donation

to Ngaruawahia.

CHATHAM CUP giant-killers Ngaruawahia United

have $4000 already in the bank with the promise of at least

another $9000 to come before the northern league division

one club heads south for its semifinal clash with Dunedin

Technical.

United needs $15,000 for the trip, and the whole of

Waikato has come to its aid. The Waikato Times kicked

things off with $1000, and Radio Sport held an appeal during

its soccer hour last week.

semifinal to be brought forward to the Saturday has been

declined.

Ngaruawahia president Maxine Williams said the

club was hoping to be able to relax after the game which,

because of the travel, would not be as easy with a Sunday

match.

"We're a bit disappointed, but we can see their point

of view," Williams said. "It's their home game, and they

reckon they'll get a better crowd on the Sunday."

Ngaruawahia United have their sights set on North

Harbour Stadium. The stadium has been allocated this year's

Chatham Cup soccer final on September 19.Ngaruawahia,

had their semifinal in Dunedin against Dunedin Technical

next weekend confirmed for Sunday after trying

unsuccessfully to switch the match to Saturday.
