Mangakino 1, Ngaruawahia 0

The Huntly Press, Wednesday 19th August, 1970

The inability to punch the ball into the net when on

attack was the contributing factor in the defeat of United on

Saturday. Played at Hopu Hopu Army Camp, the game

commenced in almost ideal conditions. The ground was firm,

the sun out and a medium breeze combined to make a good

venue.

Playing a 4-3-3 system against the orthodox 5-3-2 of

Mangakino, Ngaruawahia began the game into the sun and

took the visitors back a step from the onset. However it was

McCulloch of Mangakino who netted after some hectic work

in the penalty area that left keeper Howard Pharo unsighted,

and the ball rolled over the goal-line.

United kept probing at the Mangakino line without

results. On several occasions it looked as though a goal would

come up – once when George Sunnex fired a shot in, to have

it rebound around the players, back to him and then over the

top. Mason nearly scored from a corner for Mangakino, but

his header went inches over the top.

Ngaruawahia were extremely unlucky not to score

and win the game, having the greater percentage of

possession, however the forwards lacked the finish.

Howard Pharo, in goal, brought off some fine saves

and set up several promising attacks. Robin Turner (captain)

worked hard to find the net and later dropped back to the

defence.

Jim McCaig played his last game for the club as

centre-half, as he had been transferred to Tauranga in his

employment. Willis played well for the visitors, but nearly

gave away a goal when a clearing shot spun off his boot and

curled towards the goal, for Barret to clear well.

Mangakino: Barret, Willis (capt.), Lord, Green,

Cooper, Wipani, Parker, Bailey, Mason, McCulloch, Foster,

Greenfield and Conner.

United: Pharo, Frankhauser, White, C Gorman,

MacDonald, McCaig, Sunnex, R Turner, C Turner, N

Gorman, Watson and Nightingale.

Mangakino now has two wins in the Waitemata Cup,

the first 4-1 over Wanderers and this, their second, 1-0. Next

week they meet Huntly at Mangakino. Huntly will have to

work well together to overcome the determined play of the

Mangakino-ites. This Saturday United have a bye.

Secretary Farewelled

The secretary of the Ngaruawahia United

Association Football Club Jim McCaig was farewelled last

Wednesday night, as he has been transferred to Mount

Maunganui.

At the general meeting, Sandy MacDonald was

elected temporary secretary until the end of the season, and

he still retains the position of vice-captain. Robin Turner

was elected captain to replace (the departing) Jim McCaig.

Ngaruawahia came close to bringing home a point in

their away game against Putaruru on Saturday. Missing many

of their regulars, United were forced to play their reserves

and were therefore much weaker than normal. With the

absence of their regular keeper, United had to play their linkman

MacDonald in goal, with Barry White moving from

defence to take MacDonald’s place.

The match was halted on several occasions by

injuries, Robin Turner collecting a rather bad sprig gouging

on his ankle. United played slightly better football than was

expected and went to the turn at 1-1. A perfect pass from

outside-right Sunnex was swept into the net by Robin

Turner. Sandy MacDonald pulled off some near goals after

Putaruru had broken through Barry White’s defences.

Putaruru scored next from a corner. The ball was

placed perfectly on the far post, over the head of the keeper

and was nodded in by their tall forward. Putaruru’s third goal

came from a miskick. Keith Watson, on returning the ball to

his keeper, miskicked and the ball rolled right in front of the

goal for Putaruru to push home.

Robin Turner netted an indirect free kick off a

defender to bring Ngaruawahia within drawing range again.

Several times after that Robin Turner had some good breakaway

moves but could not get power into his shot due to his

ankle injury. United headed over the bar from 3 yards out, to

the consternation of the team – by rights the ball should have

been in the net.

George Sunnex played well, as did Maurice

Frankhauser. Final score 3-2 to Putaruru.

Ngaruawahia: Sandy MacDonald, Barry White,

Maurice Frankhauser, Kevin Dooley, Neil Gorman,

Stephen Barr, Kamira Haggie, George Sunnex, Alan

Rose, Tony Janssen, Charles Gorman, Alan Cotter

(reserve).
