Seniors Promotion Slips Away

In the final match of the season (a postponed game) against

Metro), Ngaruawahia had to win to take the second promotion spot.

An excellent crowd attended with a large representation from the

Melville AFC, Waikato United AFC and Metro FC supporters as well as

a large number of local supporters. New Zealand Director of Coaching

Alan Jones was there to see the result and to watch his son Vaughan

gain Narra’s consolation goal.

In the opening sixty seconds a clearance from our defence

that rebounded goalward off the head of Paul McMillan, was quickly

pounced upon by Metro, who centred across the goal and three red

shirts tossed for the opportunity to put the greens behind.

Late in the first half Brent Rodgers saw his clearance deflect

wickedly off his boot and screw around keeper Bruce Williams to put

Metro up 2-0. In the final minutes Vaughan Jones flicked his foot

under a cross and saw it arc high over the Metro keeper and into the

net for his first goal of the season.

With Greg Larsen sitting out the third week of his four-week

suspension and Craig Wallace having ruled himself out by gaining a

surplus of demerit points in the previous game, Ngaruawahia had

gained the services of Eden defender Craig Stevens to replace Wally

at the back. “Chats” had been a regular at Ngaruawahia during 1992.

Ngaruawahia remains in the Northern League 1st Division

for the 1994 season, to be joined by Claudelands Rovers and

Cambridge from the 2nd Division. Melville and Onehunga Sports were

promoted to Division 1.
