1985

Tongan National Team plays Ngaruawahia United

On December 12th 1985 the Club met the

Tongan National Soccer Team on Centennial Park. A

big day was made of the event with several guest

players invited to appear for Ngaruawahia.

The match kicked off at 6pm and an

entertaining spectacle ensued. John McDermid

opened the scoring to put Narra ahead but Tonga

equalised just before half time with an excellent

angled shot from outside the area. Barclay McGhie

netted the winner for Narra in the second half, 2-1.

The Tongan Squad was drawn from:

The squad was managed by T Unga

Tuitavake and coached by Tongia Tupou. The Tongan

King's representative A Halatijituia travelled with the

side as did Digger Douglas, their liason officer.
