The Club colours were chosen to carry over from

the Ngaruawahia High School strip so that the secondary

school boys could wear the same strip during both games

on a Saturday if they wished to play for the club.

For the last few games of the season the team wore

tops supplied by Railways of Frankton until the official strip

arrived. The playing colours were vertical myrtle green and

white stripes on the shirt with green trim, black shorts and

green socks with a single white band at the top.

The Ngaruawahia Borough Council granted the club

the use of Centennial Park as their home ground and many

working bees were scheduled on the small hollow-block

building and on the ground (containing a concrete cricket

wicket).

While the cricket-wicket strip was being uplifted it

was found to have been poured on top of another concrete

strip. The second strip defied the efforts of the lads to

remove it and was left to lay under about 50mm of top-soil.

The concrete was subsequently removed in 1992.

The field marked out was 100 yards by 90 yards and

a great deal of assistance was received from Mr Jack Kelly and

the Borough Council in the basic levelling and development of

the field. It was hoped that the Council would be erecting

toilets on the ground in the near future.

The Club played through the 1969 season with a

small number of members and players, which grew over the

1970 season. Club fees remained at $2.00.

ln two post-season matches against Huntly (in which

Steve Baranyai donated a cup), Ngaruawahia won 6-2 and

lost 3-4 but won the cup with a 9-6 aggregate.

Four trophies were purchased for annual

presentations to its players. The most prestigious trophy was

given the name of the Robin Bell Memorial Trophy in

remembrance of Robin, whose accidental death was deeply

felt by the Club.

At the end of the 1969 season the club had surplus

cash of $69.00 and this was boosted to a satisfying $220.00

by the end of the 1970 year.

The Lions Club had made a donation of $100 to

assist the club in its development This donation was

presented by Lions President Mr George to Jim McCaig

before the opening game of the season at Centennial Park

(Ngaruawahia v Huntly Thistle).

Further funds were raised with two $100 raffles and

a Pig-in-a-Barrow raffle. The three major fundraisers were

won by H. Gray (Pig-in-a-Barrow), T. Hogan, Peter

Henshilwood and E. Tubbs ($100 raffles).

This was the year in which the club opened an

account with the Bank of New Zealand with an initial deposit

of $2,380.

The annual RSA v United fixture was held on the

High School grounds on Sunday October 18th resulting in a 2-

2 draw. Parts of the match were filmed and the Club still has

the 8mm movie of this.
