11th Grade Tournament - 1984

Marist White had defeated Vardon

Gold in the preliminary round of the

tournament before meeting us, the “B”

squad.

The lads played well. Darryl

Donald covered his goal efficiently

(although not having much to do). Kevin

Holmes played a defender/midfield role

perfectly to set up good forays.

Our only goal came in the first

spell when Shane Sayers streaked down

the right and centred for Graham

Pilkington. Graham stepped over the

ball letting it run to Andrew Pope who

calmly side-footed the ball home.

We were through a number of

times in the second half with plenty of

support. A final pass could have created an

open goal but it was not needed. Kevin

Holmes blasted one shot at a stunned keeper

who had to take a deep breath or two to get

restarted. The 1-0 result sent us into the

second round.

Here we run up against a team,

144

Hillcrest Lions, who had played six divisions

higher and were six inches taller!

Our lads were intimidated by the

size of these 11-year-olds and the matter was

not helped by lack-lustre refereeing (at one

stage the referee was seen chatting with

another official as the game progressed).

We failed to mark a Lions striker

and, with no off-side rule, he ran away for an

easy goal. Their second came as a solo

effort from half-way. The referee

ignored a blatant push by the

striker on Graham Pilkington

before making the shot!

During the match one of

the junior Ngaruawahia spectators

intercepted a ball in the penalty

area, picked it up and tossed it to

our keeper. The spectators were

hostile and a drop ball had to be

awarded two meters out from the

post for play interference. The

spectator was completely

unflustered!

After the match the opposing coach

cheekily congratulated our boys for keeping

them down to two goals!

This put the “B” squad out of the

competition but they enjoyed their outing,

including some energy-sapping running about

between matches, and they wondered why

they were tired in the second game!
