The above photo was taken on

Centennial Park, later to become the

home of the club. Behind the players is

the block shed that served as changing

room and bar. It had previously served

as the base for the Ngaruawahia Cricket

Club.

The buildings in the distance

are of the Waipa Primary School. The

intervening space, known as the

“Tomato Patch” was later to become

the #1 field for the club.

That area was officially

designated as Cemetery but the

condition of the soil precluded any

digging below the surface, due to the

solidity of the clay substructure. It was

also prone to extremely poor drainage.

In later years the Council

assisted in providing proper drainage of

the field with the provision of two

connected bulldozers pulling a single

router blade to break through the clay

and enable drainage channels to be

provided.
