1983

MORRIE VICKERS

First Coach of the team, he took on the lads when there was no—one else and

the Club is appreciative of his interest in getting the Team mobile.

BRIAN WEBB

Took over Coaching after leaving the 2nd Division having an understanding of

the excitement, frustrations and everything else that goes with the job.

Nicknamed "Cloughy" by one Northern Leaguer, he has tremendous patience.

NEIL NEWPORT

Scored a good half-dozen in 1982 and several for the High School seniors.

Unlucky not to net one against Claudelands had a very good game

against Tokoroa. Tries his best and, like . las brother, is extremely reliable -

has never missed a practice or a game. Showed improvement throughout

the season. He has Captained the High School 1st XI this past season. Has played

striker, midfield and defender. Nominated for Sportsperson of the Year as well

as Player of the Year, being awarded the latter.

DAVID PARRISH

David still has a lot to learn about the game, but he goes out and enjoys it

every time. He never grouches, and is pretty reliable too. Looking towards a big

improvement next season. Likes to play at the back but appears to be stifled

there! His tackling has improved a lot. Excellent attitude.

EUGENE PATTERSON

A familiar face to Club members. Has even played for the 'Dive Bombers' this

year; plus picked up a 'cert' with Taupiri (along with Mark Abbott). Has only

missed two practice sessions. Has got ball skills and can 'put the pill away', but

that didn't happen too much! A likeable chap who could really sparkle next

year. Good header of the ball. Has been a frequent scorer for Taupiri and played

well in the 2nd Division against Tokoroa.

GARRY PAUL

Garry joined up late in the season and showed he was very keen, but tapered

off a little near the end. Played his best game against Hamilton. With his

enthusiasm he will advance in skills and ability this coming season.

GAVIN PEEBLES

Look out Ralph Wallace!!! He's just about your height and he has your

advantage in youth! Gavin plays centre back which explains why few balls

can be lobbed over him (around him, possibly). His attitude to the game is good

and he never stops trying. Known for his big boot he often takes the goalkicks;

and is especially handy when it is time to put the nets up, or take them

down again!!! Never missed a game, but practices left a little to be desired.

Nominated for Player of the Year.

MARK ABBOTT

At first sight one would be compelled to turn to Elliot Cathro and remark "I see

your brother's in the team?" I wonder why? Similarity aside, Mark has a very

energetic approach to football. Very keen he likes to drive the ball with his

right foot, but he didn't get too many chances to do that this past season.

His competency at heading has been shown in more than one game and he has

the necessary skills to become a good player in the future. He was awarded

Sportsperson of the Year and nominated for Most Improved.

DARREN ALLISON

Likes to line up, does this joker (usually before he kicks!)! Played in the halves

and likes to take any opportunity to have a go at goal. One of the few players

who can actually kick with both feet. He's pretty good at pool and table-tennis

as well (or is that bowls?). Always turns up at matches but needs to rethink

his attendances at practices. Nominated for Most Improved Player.

OWEN ALLISON

Another player who has shown to advantage this year. Tends to score every

now and then. He really turned it on against Taupiri. Mind you, Bernie was the

referee!!! Has potential and also aspirations for the better senior teams. Played

well this year but, with more application, he can go a lot further. He has been

singled out for good comment by opposing Coaches. Nominated for Player

of the Year.

DAVID BRIGHT

Came into the team very late in the season and had a good solid first game

against Hillcrest. Has a good all-round attitude after scoring ten goals the previous

season for the High School! He likes to think about the game and has good

potential for the future. He doesn't play too bad a game of pool, either!

DEAN PUNCHEON

"Billy" ex-2nd Division, one of the more experienced players in the team.

Played for the 2nd Division one or twice this season. Always at practice, he

has a total commitment to it and his field play, and enjoys himself. He total ignores

the fancy footwork of opposing forwards and likes to tack hard. If injured (he

usually manages that at work) he likes to make such a rare occurrence.

128

1983 Youth (U-17) Profiles

Enjoys a good joke and has a very supportive family. A very good game

against Wanderers earned him the Player of the Day award. Joint winner of

Sportsperson of the Year.

DOUGLAS EVERLEIGH

The hard man of the team, An uncompromising approach towards all

opponents. A real hard—case!!!

MALCOLM DOUGLAS

'Dougal' played once or twice this season for mostly in friendlies, and not in his

'Ugh Boots'. Played for CERS too and plans to be as good on the field as he is

with video game

WAYNE VICKERS

Goalkeeper of the team, "Lightning" has shown lot of ability. He has spent a lot

of time in the early stages of the season training with the Northern league Squad

and has improved throughout the year. Has shown dynamic keeping qualities

and there is the definite feeling that he has a long way to go before we se anything

like his potential! Wayne also has excelled as a field player and was awarded

Most Improved Player 1983.

JOHNNIE DUFFULL

Don't know if he's related to Ricky or not, but he certainly is to our Secretary,

Liz! He has the ability to be a very good soccer player (again, with a little

application). Has a nice pass and a good goal scoring foot. He played in one

or two friendlies at the end of the season and for this squad earlier on. He

missed joining the Forces, but that could be their loss and our gain. He has

ambitions towards the 1st Division and we hope he makes it.

WAYNE FRANKHOUSER

"Franky" to all his mates. A very co-operative club member - always willing to

lend a hand. He is another who joined late in the season and has spent a bit of

time on the bench, unfortunately, but shows commendable patience. He

tries very hard and had a good game against Hamilton. He will be better in the

new 1984 season and a whole competition.

PHILIP GRAY

A lot quieter than his Dad!!! Played a few games for CERS this year and was not

with the Youth team towards the end of the season. Had a very good match

against Te Aroha 2nd Division team.

DEREK LAUDER

Came on as substitute against Tokoroa and acquitted himself well. Played

against Hamilton and Wanderers where he repeated his worth. He was

developing well until side-lined with a knee injury (definitely have to watch out

for those fan belts, chaps!).

MICHAEL McLAREN

Exhibits a fine work-rate in each match. Scored a good goal for the High

School against Matamata but tapered off late in the season. Has an abundance

of speed with a creditable shot.

STUART MILLER

Shin problems midway through the season did not give Stuart a good run. He

has the potential to be a more than adequate footballer, if he decides to be so!

CLIFTON NEWPORT

Ex 13th'A' and High School 3rd XI 1982 and played for the 1st XI this season.

Like the coach he's deficient in inches but expends heaps of energy on the

field. Never says die! Good at heading and talking and will not back down

from a situation. It will be good to see him back next season as he is ultrareliable.

Nominated for Sportsperson of the Year.
