Reserves - Waikato Division 1

The first five games of the season were played

without a coach present! Manager Bobby had

problems with three losses and a draw under the belt in

the initial four games.

Lost 1-3 away to Unicol; drew 3-3 at home to

Melville; lost 0-1 at Huntly and lost 0-4 in front of a home

crowd to Wanderers. The fifth game was away at

Tokoroa and there were three changes to the team —

Ray Havill, Chris Spray and Grant Carlson all moved into

the squad.

Bernie Carmody turned up at Tokoroa (in

torrential rain and in the cold) to see a convincing 2-1 win to

Narra. This was Bernie weighing up the team where he

decided to make the move from Melville to Narra to

become Reserve Team Coach. Under this new tutorship

the next 14 games saw 8 wins and two draws.

The knockout match against Tokoroa featured

as perhaps the better game of the season — a spectator

match of 120 action-packed minutes with the game going

to Tokoroa 6-5.

This was a game of skills, thrills and

excitement with the usual dubious doubts about

penalties. Corners favoured us 7-4 while Tokoroa had the

advantage 16-13 in free-kicks. The goals flowed freely. In

the 18th minute Chris Spray netted a penalty; Tokoroa

replied in the 36th and 43rd minutes; Chris Barakat

equalised in the 46th. Eleven minutes later Tokora

pulled in front before Chris Barakat took us ahead with

goals in the 57th and 60th minutes.

However Tokoroa forced extra time with their

equaliser with 11 minutes to go. In extra time they netted

twice in the 100th and 103rd minute to a sole goal in the

107th from Steve Williams.

Rod Hill had the dubious distinction of being sent for

an early shower, while Player of the Day was

shared by Peter Magee and Eddie Callaghan.

EDDIE CALLAGHAN SENIOR

Manager for the season and built up a rapport with the team. His secret? If

they do not perform he threatens to Coach them!

BERNIE CARMODY

Honourable Coach. Has welded the players together into a cohesive unit,

which will show through more dramatically in 1984. A valuable member of

the Coaching staff.

RODNEY HILL

A goalkeeper of no mean ability. He is not backward about

aggressive defending. Backflips into the uprights is his specialty.

Pulled the ball out of the netting 41 times while he watched his

forwards tuck 50 in the other end.

EDDIE CALLAGHAN

Full of fire and verve. Will chase anything the looks

vaguely like a ball on the paddock. Has had a few runs with the

Northern League and showed promise.

GEORGE SUNNEX

One of the "older" brigade. George has got out of the habit of trying

to beat a player three times before passing! A hard

grafter who has been with the Club for most of its existence.

BILL EMMENS

Well known for his mouthguard. A dependable marshal in defense and a tidy

worker. Good sense of humour.
