needed — it plays its final match against

Tauranga City at Ngaruawahia on

September 4, while Oratia meets fifth

placed Cornwall a week earlier.

Ngaruawahia cleared the

penultimate hurdle on Saturday in a free

flowing local derby thanks to a 10th

minute Jeff Tozer goal.

Ngaruawahia completely

dominated an injury-stricken and

makeshift Claudelands line-up, but

failed to capitalise on the countless

chances it created.

With six of his regular first

team players not available, Claudelands

player-coach Brian Lloyd was forced to

call in reserves from the club's Waikato

league teams, and the lack of

combination was a telling factor.

The decisive goal came from a

Mike Liddle through ball which found

Tozer in space, and the big striker

finished the move well.

Ngaruawahia stamped its

authority on the match in the first half,

when it had the benefit of a fitful, gusty

breeze, but hesitant finishing kept the

scoreline at 1-0.

Claudelands occasionally

threatened, mainly through fast breaks

by pacey striker Craig Stewart, but only

appeared likely to score late in the game

when Ngaruawahia abandoned its match

tactics and pulled men back in defence

to protect the two vital points.

Huntly Thistle wound up a

promising debut season in the third

division with a 1-1 draw against

Cornwall at Huntly Domain.

The draw left Huntly in sixth

place, one point adrift of Cornwall,

which almost certainly lost its chance of

overhauling fourth placed Claudelands.

Warren Manktelow put Huntly

ahead early in the second half with a

backheel from a goalmouth scramble,

but Cornwall grabbed the equaliser just

before full time after an error by Huntly

keeper Ray Foran.

Away From Promotion

Huntly Press, 25th August 1982

Ngaruawahia-Affco's Geoff

Tozer's 10th minute goal against

Claudelands Rovers last weekend was

enough to enable his team to look

towards their final match of the season

with the definite possibility of winning

the Northern League 3rd Division and

gaining promotion.

With one game in hand and two

points adrift of Otara Rangers,

Ngaruawahia needs to beat Tauranga

City by two clear goals to overtake their

rivals on goal difference. Oratia United

also have the possibility of gaining

promotion also if they can defeat

Cornwall by four clear goals, leaving

Otara in the 3rd Division for the 3rd

time in three years after leading the

division each time.

Galloway Park, Hamilton saw

some enterprising football from the

mighty Green Machine as they gained

their two vital points off the Red Devils

on Saturday. Rovers used their offside

trap to effect but Ngaruawahia were able

to mount a number of telling forays and

forced numerous corners.

Nacho Reyes, Tozer, Phillip

Hunter, Jason Cargo, John

McDermid and Keith Mackrell all

came close to developing their lead

further while Man of the Match Barclay

McGhie worked like a trojan at both

ends of the field.

Captain McDermid’s ball skills

were poetry to watch while John Mohn

performed like a terrier in defense along

with Steve Williams and Jason Cargo.

Keith Mackrell's hot pace on the right

wing was partially nullified by Rovers

speedy and young left fullback but
