by getting his second, Phil Hunter

Ngaruawahia Crush

Tauranga

Waikato Times, 16th August 1982

In the third division all was

quiet on the promotion front on Saturday

after several up and down weeks.

Division leader Otara Rangers

had a bye, and chasing teams

Ngaruawahia-AFFC0 United and Oratia

United closed the gap to three points

with a game in hand with wins on

Saturday.

Ngaruawahia convincingly

crushed Tauranga City 4-1 at Tauranga,

but Oratia had more of a struggle in the

back-blocks of west Auckland against

Claudelands Rovers before winning 1-0.

Ngaruawahia's clear-cut win at

Tauranga kept it in second place, ahead

of Oratia on goal difference, with two

games to play.

Otara seems certain to take one

promotion spot, unless it drops its final

game of the season to eighth placed

Tauranga, but the second position is still

wide open.

Red versus Green...

Hamilton Press, 18th August 1982

THE Red Army vs the Green

Machine ...

That's the billing for one of the

most thrilling local soccer matches in

years — Claudelands Rovers vs

Ngaruawahia-Affco United, at Galloway

Park, Hamilton East, on Saturday. Kickoff

is 2.45pm.

Ngaruawahia (the Green

Machine) have been pacesetters in the

Country Foods northern soccer league all

year. Currently second, they're a strong,

powerful team, built around the

experience of former Hamilton City and

New Zealand international John

McDermid.

Claudelands (the Red Army)

are the glamour team of the league. After

a stumbling start, they imported English

professional Milton Graham and tore the

competition apart.

Since Graham returned, the

young side has shown spunk by

continuing a run that has seen only one

loss in two months! They're fourth in the

league.

Claudelands can claim to be the

most entertaining soccer team in the

Waikato — their free-scoring forwards

have netted almost 60 goals this year,

more than any other side in the league.

The teams also have a private

score to settle. They've met twice this

year — Ngaruawahia winning 2-0 in the

league, Claudelands triumphing in a

penalty shoot-out in the Adidas Chatham

Cup.

So in the last game of the

season, Claudelands coach Brian Lloyd

and Ngaruawahia boss Dave Hall will

each be out to show that their 11 men are

top dogs. It promises to be a great

afternoon's soccer.

Ngaruawahia has set up

fine finish

Waikato Times, 23rd August 1982

By Steve Waddingham

Ngaruawahia-AFFCO United

set up a superb climax to the Country

Foods League third division promotion

battle when it downed Claudelands

Rovers 1-0 at Galloway Park on

Saturday.

In the two other vital results,

Oratia United sneaked in, 2-1, for the

win it needed over lowly Kelston West,

but for the third season in a row Otara

Rangers faltered at the line, dropping a

point to Tauranga City in a 1-1 draw.

With its 11-match programme

completed, Otara has a two point lead

over Ngaruawahia and Oratia, which

both have a game to play.

Otara has a goal difference of

plus 23, Ngaruawahia's is plus 22 and

Oratia's plus 20:

So the three month promotion

battle has come down to a simple

equation.

Ngaruawahia and Oratia must

win their last matches to overhaul Otara.

Ngaruawahia needs a two goal winning

margin, Oratia needs four.

Ngaruawahia will have the

advantage of knowing exactly what is
