Huntly pulled one back right on

the stroke of halftime when Flowerday

sent new Ngaruawahia 'keeper Jim

Barry the wrong way with a penalty

after he had been pushed by Dick

Plume.

Huntly, which had almost given

away the midfield in the first half, came

out in the second and closed it down to

the point where players were falling over

each other in the crowd.

The tactics worked and

Ngaruawahia seldom threatened over the

final 45 minutes, although Foran was

forced to make several courageous saves

from dangerous through balls.

Midfielder John McDermid

went close to making it 3-2 when he hit

the post after a goalmouth scramble, but

Flowerday replied for Huntly when his

blinding direct free kick forced a brilliant

diving save from Barry.

Shocks and Upsets

Waikato Times, July 12th 1982

Shocks and upsets galore were

the order of the day in Country Foods

northern league soccer on Saturday.

The biggest was Ngaruawahia-

AFFCO United's crash to a 1-2 defeat at

the hands of middle of the table

Cornwall.

But Ngaruawahia coach Dave

Hall refused to concede the upset result

put his side out of the three-way chase

for the two third division promotion

spots.

"I think the lay-off last week

affected us, but the lads are so

determined we are going to win

promotion this year," said Hall after the

game in Auckland.

"We still have matches left

against Otara and Oratia, and if we don't

win those we don't deserve to go up".

Cornwall rocked Ngaruawahia

with two goals in the first 10 minutes,

and for 80 minutes the greens struggled

to pull the lead back.

John Cyples gave Ngaruawahia

some hope when he got one back in the

20th minute, but although it was oneway

traffic in the second half the

Waikato side was all at sea on the

narrow Cornwall pitch.

Ngaruawahia's hopes took a

further knock when Otara Rangers sent

Oratia United tumbling to its first loss of

the season, 3.1,

When the dust settled at the end

of the upset weekend, Otara held a three

point lead over Oratia, with

Ngaruawahia another two points further

back.

Oratia and Ngaruawahia both

have two games in hand over Otara, but

the crucial matches will be the return

games between Ngaruawahia and the

two leaders.

Fans Warm to Chilean

Waikato Times, 19th July 1982

Chilean midfielder Nacho

Reyes was the man of the moment at

Ngaruawahia's Centennial Park on

Saturday.

Reyes slammed in two goals in

the last four minutes as Ngaruawahia-

AFFCO United staged a stunning comeback

in a Country Foods League third

division soccer match.

After falling behind to a second

half own goal, Ngaruawahia trailed arch

rival Oratia United 0-1 after 86 minutes,

its hopes of promotion apparently dashed

for the season.

With one of the best defensive

records in the league behind it, Oratia

had looked unlikely to concede a goal to

the struggling Ngaruawahia attack.

But Reyes gave the home side a

new lease of life when he nipped in for

the equaliser with just four minutes left

on the clock.

And in injury time it was the

darting Chilean again, slotting the goal

which could see Ngaruawahia on its way

into the second division next season.

Otara Rangers went out to a

five point lead with a comfortable 4-1

win over struggling Kelston West in

Auckland, leaving a two-way race between

Oratia and Ngaruawahia for the

second promotion spot.

Saturday's win gave

Ngaruawahia a slender one point

advantage over Oratia, and its chances

will rest on next week's vital away clash

with Otara.
