Leading 1-0 at half time

through a Jeff Tozer goal, Ngaruawahia

took control in the second half, and two

Mike Liddle goals clinched the win.

With a game in hand, the win

moved Ngaruawahia within striking

distance of leaders Oratia United and

Otara Rangers.

Tom Wallace Memorial

Huntly Press, June 1982

Ngaruawahia made it seven out

of seven to take the Tom Wallace

Memorial Cup in the Waikato 1st

Division Soccer Competition.

Scoring 25 goals with seven

against, the team presented their club

with the first trophy of the season.

The goals against have

comprised 3 penalties and two own-goals

with Melville being the only team to put

an original goal (two) past the defense.

Goals from Phillip Hunter,

Phillip Bullivant and Bill Emmens

assured Ngaruawahia-Affco United 1st

Division team of the Tom Wallace

Memorial Trophy on Saturday.

Arriving at Putaruru knowing

their hosts had to defeat them by four

clear goals or better, they were surprised

to meet an old team-mate in Wilf Peard,

playing striker for Putaruru Rangers,

who were also undefeated in

competition.

Peard showed he had lost little

of his form as he peppered the

Ngaruawahia goal with both kicks and

headers, but Sandy MacDonald

managed to attract the ball like a magnet

and his and Putaruru's goals stayed intact

for the first 49 minutes.

The Duffull brothers worked

106

well in defense with few lapses, and

Murphy, McIntosh and McCaig made

maximum use of the left wing. Such

freedom lead to Phillip Hunter sprinting

through on a ball and striking it at an

angle for the right-hand post. The keeper

parried but it was Bullivant who was on

hand to crack a tightly angled shot in at

the near post.

John Murphy ran a Putaruru

player off the ball in the penalty area and

Putaruru equalised. Putaruru handled in

their area shortly after and it was left to

Captain Emmens to net, making all

outfield players goal scorers in this

competition.

Phillip Hunter's goal was a

well executed chip from the edge of the

18-metre box as he spied the keeper a

fraction too far out and this gave

Ngaruawahia their 3-1 win.

Peard had a glorious chance to

pull one back when a through ball

bounced kindly for him behind the

Ngaruawahia defense, but his 5-metre

drive was placed too close to the keeper

and it was parried away.

Although Wilf Peard was not

named the Putaruru man of the match,

Ngaruawahia were well impressed with

his positional play and high percentage

of accurate strikes on goal (8 out of 9).

Ricky Duffull was named as the

Waikato Wines & Spirits Man for

Ngaruawahia.

Still in Touch

Huntly Press, 9th June 1982

Ngaruawahia-Affco United

Northern League 3rd Division squad

stayed firmly in touch with the frontrunners

with their 3-1 victory over

Hamilton Wanderers at home on Sunday.

New acquisitions from the

Reserve team Mike Liddle and Jeff

Harman were in the thick of everything,

with Liddle netting twice and Harman

being the saving grace of his team and

earning Man of The Match.

It was one of the better

committed team efforts to date this

season with all players featuring in total

commitment to the effort.

Both goals survived early

efforts by strikers with Harman heading

off the line a curling free kick that

eluded Sean Crowe; then John

McDermid saw his floater from the left

wing slide over the bar and onto the net

roof. Steve Williams, fullback, ran 50

metres to just nod wide a Ngaruawahia

free kick, but it was in the 35th minute

that Jeff Tozer waltzed his way through

the packed defense to put the Green

Machine up 1-0.

In the 38th minute Wanderers

defender Mark Templeman went off with

a knee injury and had to be transported

to hospital by ambulance. Jason Cargo

came close with an attacking free kick
