Galloway Park Thriller

Waikato Times, 24th May 1982

The local cup derby with

everything!

That was the only way to

describe the nail biting first round

Adidas Chatham Cup soccer match

between Claudelands Rovers and

Ngaruawahia-AFFC0 United at

Galloway Park on Saturday.

Tension, goals, controversy and

the traditional bite between the two

Waikato teams created a spectacle that

had the cold, wet crowd enthralled for

more than two hours.

Deservedly, Claudelands finally

won through to the second round of the

cup, but its supporters had plenty of

anxious moments before hero of the day

Eddie Wilson pulled it through.

Ninety minutes of normal time

and 30 minutes of extra time could not

break the deadlock as Ngaruawahia

twice scrambled in late equalisers to

bring the scoreline to 3-3.

Then, with Rovers supporters

lining the touchlines to cheer him on,

Wilson saved three of Ngaruawahia's

five penalty shots to win Claudelands the

shoot-out 3-2.

The turning point of the game

was the ordering off of Ngaruawahia

'keeper Sean Crowe 11 minutes into the

second half.

Crowe's early shower thrust

fullback John Mohn into the unenviable

position of having to face the music at

the end.

Although Mohn saved one and

Craig Stewart missed one, it was the

class of Wilson which carried the day.

Claudelands deserved the win

because it adapted better to the soggy

underfoot conditions, and made most of

the play during the 120 minutes.

But Ngaruawahia earned

admiration for having the determination

to fight back twice despite being a man

short and looking outplayed.

Ngaruawahia opened the

scoring in the 18th minute when

midfielder Mackrell was left unmarked

on the far post and had time to spare to

pick his spot.

Dennis Wilson put Claudelands

level seconds before halftime when he

bent a free kick around the Ngaruawahia

wall into the top right corner.

Crowe's ordering off seemed to

spell the end for Ngaruawahia, especially

as it led to a penalty, which Murray

Branch comfortably put away.

But Ngaruawahia climbed back

to force the game into extra time with a

Geoff Tozer goal just two minutes

before no-side (full-time).

Claudelands hit the front again

two minutes into the first period of extra

time through a freak goal by Ray Dixon

which floated from near halfway over

Mohn's head and just under the crossbar.

But again it was not enough to

clinch victory for Claudelands, as Mick

Little struck back for Ngaruawahia four

minutes from the end after Claudelands

had failed to clear a Tozer shot.

In dramatic fashion Wilson

saved the first penalty, from John

McDermid, and Claudelands led 2-1

with successful attempts by Branch and

Ian Fisher against Ngaruawahia's solitary

success by Jason Cargo.

Stewart knocked Claudelands'

third attempt on to the bar, but Wilson

nullified the failure by smothering

Mohn's shot.

Dennis Wilson put one in off

the post for Claudelands and Nelson

Grandona replied_ for Ngaruawahia.

Mohn kept Ngaruawahia in

with a chance when he saved Jim

Keatkey's spot kick, but with the chance

of levelling the scores, Liddle could only

hit a weak kick straight to Wilson.

Within Striking Distance

Waikato Times, 31st May 1982

At Ngaruawahia the home side

continued its challenge for promotion

from the third division with a sound 3-1

win over Hamilton Wanderers.
