Hall says, the result could be a blessing

in disguise. Ngaruawahia must be

looking to promotion from the third

division this year after its healthy start to

the competition.

"We're unbeaten in the league,

we're still in the Chatham Cup after a

good win last week (5-0 over Hamilton

Wanderers), and we're starting to get a

bit behind in our fixtures."

The Country Foods Cup is the

least important of the three competitions

and, "if we had to go out, it's good to

know that we went out gracefully to a

first division side," Hall said.

Five Minute Explosion

Waikato Times, 17th May 1982

At Centennial Park,

Ngaruawahia, a game which stuttered

along for 85 minutes exploded in the last

five as the home side downed third

division leader Otara Rangers 2-1.

In their search for quality

football both sides made plenty of

mistakes, but the result was a game

which flowed freely, although lacking

the fire traditionally produced by the two

teams.

Big striker Jeff Tozer broke the

deadlock in the amiable romp 10 minutes

before halftime when he chested down a

through ball and made the most of a collision

which took out the Otara keeper to

put Ngaruawahia one up.

Both sides had their chances in

the second spell, with Otara working on

Ngaruawahia's tendency to bunch

through the centre of the paddock.

Ngaruawahia keeper Sean

Crow had plenty of work pulling down

crosses from the wing as Otara ran

everything wide in search of the

equaliser.

It finally came in the 86th

minute when a cross found Otara striker

Russell Barlow unmarked in the penalty

area, and he scorched in a snap left foot

shot on the turn.

The reverse stung the home side

into action, and with just two minutes to

play Otara failed to clear a cross from

the right and defender Jason Cargo

flung himself into a match-winning

diving header.

Waikato Meets

Bournemouth on Sunday

Waikato Times, 17th May 1982

Former New Zealand World

Cup squad member Alec Young has

been called in to strengthen the Waikato

soccer team to play Bournemouth on

Sunday.

Young, who represented New

Zealand while playing in the Rothmans

League for Hamilton, transferred to

Country Foods League third division

Tauranga City two seasons ago.

The lanky fullback is one of

seven regional league players to be

included in the 15-man Waikato squad

by selectors Ron Cane and Geoff

Tregurtha.

The others are Tony Dickman

(Cambridge), Geoff Flowerday (Huntly

Thistle), Jim Keaney (Claudelands

Rovers) and Sean Crowe, John

McDermid and Dick Plume from

Ngaruawahia-AFFCO United.

Eight members of Cane's

Hamilton City Rothmans League squad

make up the backbone of the Waikato

team.

The Hamilton front line of

Graeme Fleming, Mike Groom and Peter

Hoebergen has been kept intact.

Others included are goalkeeper

Paul Meecham, defenders Harry Gilgrist

and Doug Snapes, and midfielders

Laurie Fawcett and Paul Funnell.

The match will be played at

Hamilton's Porritt Stadium at 2pm.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth has

named a mixture of youth and

experience in its squad to tour New

Zealand.

The squad will be led by club

captain John Impey, a defender with

more than 250 league appearances.

Long serving goalkeeper Kenny

Allen, the most successful minder in

English league football this season, has

also been named in the 19-strong squad,

along with top goalscorers Dean Mooney

and Trevor Morgan.

Bournemouth clinched

promotion to the English third division

ten days ago after finishing fourth in the

fourth division.

The "Cherries" lost only four of

their 46 games this season, and Allen let
