Division Northern League

Huntly Press 14th April 1982

With already 26 games behind

them this season, Ngaruawahia AFFCO

United Soccer Club are riding the crest

of a wave.

With three pre-season

Tournaments and several friendlies; the

Senior Northern League Squad have

played in 26 matches this season for only

two losses (one on the toss of a coin, and

the other on penalties).

The leadership and example of

ex-National League players Dick Plume

and John McDermid who transferred

from Hamilton, has given Ngaruawahia

the strength and the bite it lacked last

season. Coach Dave Hall has been able

to use the preseason games as a build-up

to the Country Foods Cup, The Chatham

Cup competition and the Northern

League series.

A 2-0 win over Claudelands

Rovers in the first game of the League

was followed on Saturday at Kelston

West by a 3-1 victory for an Easter

bonus.

Kelston have always been the

nemesis of Ngaruawahia and in past

seasons have always come from behind

to snatch last-gasp wins. For. the first 20

minutes Ngaruawahia looked quite

ordinary and soaked up a lot of pressure

and survived a few close encounters

Then Ngaruawahia clicked and it was

power-football for the remaining 70

minutes

John McDermid was awarded

the Player of the Day for United for

leading his team in a 100% attacking

style of football The speed at which

Ngaruawahia turned defense into an

attack on the Kelston goal was

something that made for exciting football

There was no slow build-up in midfield

everything was done rapidly, with

United strikers getting behind

the .opposition defense continually.

This win keeps Ngaruawahia up

top of the table and committing the other

teams to a hard season.

On Saturday Ngaruawahia are

at home to Huntly Thistle, with both

teams eager to add points to their tally

there should be some exciting football

The rivalry between Ngaruawahia's

lively forwards and Huntly's effective off

-side trap along with entertaining and

aggressive match play will excite the

spectators at Centennial Park,

Ngaruawahia.

Best in third division

Waikato Times, 19th April 1982

In the third division,

Ngaruawahia-AFFCO United stayed at

the top of the table with a 3-1 win over

neighbour Huntly Thistle at

Ngaruawahia.

Ngaruawahia had to come from

a goal down after striker Geoff

Flowerday had put Huntly ahead with a

breakaway goal.

Nelson Grandona hit back for

the home side to level the scores with a

finely chipped shot shortly before

halftime.

The second half belonged to

Ngaruawahia, and further goals to

Grandona and midfielder Jason Cargo

kept its unbeaten record intact.

First Loss Suffered

Waikato Times, 3rd May 1982

Ngaruawahia-Affco United,

from the Country Foods northern soccer

league's third division, has suffered its

first loss of the season — and it took a

first division side to beat them.

Dave Hall's "green machine"

went down 2-1 to Eden in a Country

Foods Cup-tie at Centennial Park,

Ngaruawahia, after an exciting and

competitive match on Saturday.

The outcome was in doubt,

from Ngaruawahia's fighting start to a

grandstand finish that had spectators

applauding both sides — and the referee

— from the field.

Ngaruawahia started the match

by peppering the Auckland team's goal,

and went 1-0 after 20 minutes through

John Stewart.

Stewart was injured soon after

and spent the night in Waikato Hospital.

Eden equalised shortly before halftime

and went 2-1 ahead after the break.

Ngaruawahia ran the first

division side off their feet in the last half

-hour, hitting the woodwork a couple of

times, but couldn't grab an equaliser.

In the clubhouse after the

match, Eden players admitted they were

lucky to get the win.

But, as Ngaruawahia's coach
