Waikato's first repre­sentative under-19 soccer team

leaves tomorrow to compete in the northern region tournament

at Rotorua.

The Waikato team, coached by NZFA Waikato area

coach Ron Cane, and managed by Claudelands Rovers coach

Brian Lloyd, will play matches against Bay of Plenty and two

Auckland sides.

After the tournament Don Jones, coach of Rothmans

League side Hanimex North Shore United, will select a northern

region under-19 team to play against central and southern region

sides in Wellington later this season.

The 'northern region tournament will also be watched

by national under-19 coach Doug Moore, who will keep an eye

on candidates for his squad.

Two Hamilton players, Mark Cossey and Mat Walker,

are already members of the national squad.

Waikato squad for the northern region tournament is.—

M. Hadleigh (Unicol); B.Slimm (Otorohanga); W. de Souza, M.

Redmond (St John's College); Elliot Cathro, Keith Mackrell

(Ngaruawahia-AFFC0 United); R. Dixon; I. Taylor (Claudelands

Rovers); S. Kerbers (Tokoroa); J. Reynolds, C. Patterson

(Huntly Thistle); D. Ireland, M. Cossey, M. Walker, F. Begley,

E. Sutcliffe (Hamilton).

The squad has had preparation for the tournament in the

form of trials, and a final warm-up match against the Hamilton

Rothmans League side last Sunday.

Draw for the tournament sees it play Auckland Red on

Saturday afternoon, Bay of Plenty on Sunday morning, and

Auckland Black on Sunday afternoon.

During May the Bournemouth team (which

had clinched promotion to the English 3rd Division

just 10 days before flying out) met Waikato. The

"Cherries” had lost just four of their 46 games

this season having the best defense in the 92-

team league.
