HENKEL'S THIRTEENTH

The Ngaruawahia-Affco Second Division clash away

against Morrinsville was a memorable day for Ben Henkel. He

well remembers an occasion 30 months ago when he missed a

penalty against Morrinsville at Morrinsville and here he found

himself facing the same goal on the same ground attempting to

net his 13th consecutive penalty; and again, he missed. The 0-0

draw that resulted at the end of time made him well, aware of

the parallel in 1977.

JOLLY GREEN GIANT WINS

A four-point gap has opened up between the first

three teams and other contenders in the Fourth Division

(South) Northern League competition. Tokoroa's 3.1 win over

Mount Maunganui allowed Huntly, Rotorua and Ngaruawahia

to pull further away. Four clubs have only one further match to

play in the division - Mount Maunganui, Cambridge, Tokoroa

and Kawerau, with Fraser looking doomed to relegation.

Thistle's 3-1 win away at Taupo and Rotorua's

expected 4-0 result against Fraser joined with Ngaruawahia's 4

-0 defeat . of Kawerau_to maintain their positions at the top.

Ngaruawahia's previous 0-3 win over Kawerau Town

could not be matched on Saturday, especially with the in formplay

of "Golly" Horua who seemed impossible to mark and to

whom Ngaruawahia gave plenty of room.

It certainly wasn't all Ngaruawahia, as the defence had

to contend with some classy build-ups from Kawerau and some

heart-throbbing back-passes from the Ngaruawahia United

defence. In the first spell chances went 12-3 to Ngaruawahia

with both teams looking dangerous at times.

A cracker of a shot from Mike Liddle in the fourth

minute brought out the best in the Kawerau keeper who had

not expected Mike to be able to spin 180 degrees and hit the

ball. Pepe Viedma had two chances with through balls but

could not engineer the goal as did Jimmy Reyes.

Jeff Tozer lobbed a through ball for Chris Barakat

to latch onto but he struck it too far. The ball bounced in front

of the advancing keeper, striking a firmer bit of ground and

arced over the goalie and on into the net. Chris could have

easily accelerated the ball in to claim the goal but was content

to shepherd it in for a 35th minute goal. 1-0.

Viedma netted three times in the second spell. His

first came when he sprinted onto a through ball and snapped it

onto the keepers legs. The bobbling ball came back to Pepe,

who could not control his second shot but it went in anyway.

Alan Dorman fed Pepe the perfect diagonal cross and the shot

went away most professionally. John Brown's shot came off

the legs of the keeper and Viedma was there to strike home the

goal for a 4.0 win.

EIGHT MORE POINTS?

Huntly, Taupo and Fraser (twice) must fall before

Ngaruawahia's Green Machine can look at the possibility of

promotion to the Third Division next season.
