Rupert’s Review
My 6th Year at the Chamber Helm
As I celebrate 6 years as the
Somerset Chamber’s Chief
Executive on 2 nd May it is fitting
that while we can recognise our
successes over this period of
tremendous growth and change,
the Board are already looking at
the next 3-year business plan.
Several years ago I heard a
speaker use the phrase “your
past is for reference and not residence” and this is
something that has left an indelible mark on me as we
try to progress the Somerset Chamber forward to its
next phase of development. We will not live the past
and dote on previous success although we will learn
from our successes and failures as we build for the
future.
The new Business Plan, to be launched at our AGM in
November 2012, will be owned by the Board and I hope
embraced by the membership and our other
stakeholders; so over the next few weeks and months
everyone who has a stake in the Somerset Camber will
have the chance to contribute to shaping its future.
When you get invited to get involved through our
surveying or through a focus group, please do, as this
will help us deliver what our membership wants and will
value.
We know our members are at the centre of all we do
and that will remain so. We are setting an ambitious
target of achieving 1,000 members by 2020 (over the
lifetime of more than one 3-year plan). This is a 150%
increase, but will only bring us to the average
membership for BCC accredited Chambers. To deliver
this level of growth we have to put in place not just a
robust recruiting mechanism, but also a benefits
package that is meaningful, tangible and cost effective,
Our Patrons
You can find the Somerset Chamber of Commerce
on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
and a member relationship process that provides our
members with the level of service they deserve.
From our early deliberations we are keen to develop the
principles of the successful Hinkley Supply Chain
project, into mainstream procurement opportunities by
inviting our largest employers and businesses to use
the local supply chain more proactively. This will provide
benefit to both sides of the procurement process.
We will work with other agencies to support exporters
and those who may wish to export to garner more
business from international trade. We will continue to
project manage Into Somerset and the Hinkley Supply
Chain and make sure that our members can make the
most of business opportunities that arise from them.
We will also continue to represent the views of our
members and the Somerset business community on
matters of economic development policy at a local,
regional and national level such as broadband capacity,
skills & training agenda or road & rail infrastructure
development.
What do you think? What do you want your Somerset
Chamber of Commerce to do to support your business?
Is it new business opportunities; networking events;
discounted products or services; strong lobbying voice;
advice service; start-up or mentoring service?
We should not or will not be “all things to all people” as
this will devalue our brand and our services, but we will
endeavour to understand the needs of the Somerset
business community and provide a membership
package and pricing structure that will attract a wide
cross section of businesses to membership as we know
that the bigger the pool of members, the more business
opportunities there will be.
Please email me with your views to
rupertcox@somerset-chamber.co.uk and also
contribute more formally to our summer consultation.
A big thank you to the Patrons of the Somerset Chamber of Commerce whose continued
support is vital to the growth of the Chamber.
British Chamber of Commerce Awards 2012
Companies could win £25,000 at Chamber
awards
Companies are being urged to show that ‘Business is
Good for Britain’ by taking part in one of the nation’s
leading Awards.
showcase their talents and achievements to be in with
a chance of winning a £25,000 cash prize.
Open to all businesses that are members of an
Affiliated Chamber (such as Somerset Chamber), the
competition is designed to recognise and promote the
best businesses in Britain through a series of regional
heats followed by the National Final, which will be held
in London on November 29 th.
There are nine categories to choose from;
 Achievement in International Business
Award for Commitment to People Development
 Award for Excellence in Innovation
Award for Excellence in Customer Service
 Business of the Year Award
 Entrepreneur of the Year Award
 Marketing Campaign of the Year
 Most Promising New Business Award
 The Sustainability Award
The Awards, which are now in their 9 th year, is one of
the showcase events for the BCC’s ‘Business is Good
for Britain’ campaign that highlights the role of
business as a positive force for the UK recovery and the
success of local communities and individuals.
President Martyn Pellew said: “This year we want
everyone to understand the contribution business
makes to the economy, and to society as a whole.
Businesses will be at the forefront of the recovery,
providing jobs, and creating wealth.
“Every day we hear amazing stories from businesses
that are innovative, successful in international markets,
and create new products. It is stories like these that we
are looking to find and recognise through the Chamber
Awards. Last year, over 600 firms took part and 2012
promises to be even bigger as we look to demonstrate
that ‘Business is Good for Britain!’”
Closing date for entries is 29 th June, with companies
assessed at a regional level first, with the winners going
through to compete in the National Final in November.
At this stage, a high-profile judging panel of business
leaders and entrepreneurs assesses contenders,
before the overall winners are announced in each
category with one company winning the £25,000 cash
prize and the Outstanding Business Achievement title.
This year, it could be you and all you need to do is
complete and submit your entry form!
WHY ENTER?
Gaining that competitive edge!
The world of commerce is increasingly competitive, due
to factors such as e-commerce and ever changing
economic climates. Businesses in the UK have to work
harder and smarter for success.
As members of Accredited Chambers of Commerce our
entrants are part of a wider national business network,
and the Chamber Awards provide them with the
opportunity to gain recognition on a regional and
national scale for the hard work and achievements of
their business.
Taking business to the next level!
Previous winners have experienced year round
exposure from the Awards programme including
appearances on TV. With the added incentive of
winning a £25,000 cash prize courtesy of the RBS
Group, many businesses have taken advantage of this
opportunity!
Awards categories
Our awards categories aim to recognise the success
and achievements of your business across a number of
disciplines from international trade to innovation and
Seed Developments Sows plan for growth
Expansion plans follow HSBC-backed Management
Buy-In
The new management of Seed Developments, a
company that produces materials to facilitate the
successful growth of flower and vegetable seeds, is
targeting international and domestic expansion after
completing a management buy-in (MBI) of the business,
backed by HSBC’s South West and Wales Commercial
division.
The four strong investment team, lead by managing
director Andrew Gould, has acquired the entire share
capital of the business following the £2.5 million MBI,
with finance provided by HSBC. Mark Perrins,
International Commercial Manager at HSBC’s North
Devon and South Somerset Commercial Centre, led the
deal on behalf of the bank, whilst the acquirers were
advised by law firm Foot Anstey and accountants Albert
Goodman.
This is the second significant MBO/MBI deal HSBC’s
North Devon and South Somerset Commercial Centre
has supported since the start of the year. It provided
structured debt and ongoing banking services to
facilitate the £8.5 million MBO of Aero Stanrew in
January.
Seed Development is based near Bridgwater,
Somerset, and employs approximately 50 people. The
company produces materials to facilitate the growth of
domestic flower and plant seeds, including tape, mats
and disks. The products optimally place the seeds for
efficient growth without the need for handling seeds,
remove the need for thinning out seedlings and
resulting in better yields and stronger plants.
Pictured from left to right are Duncan Sykes,
Andrew Gould, Tracey Williams and Mark
Perrins.
It makes seed tapes and associated products for seed
companies throughout Europe, North America and
Australasia and enjoys a 70% share of the global
market, generating 98% of its £2.3 million turnover
from exports. It was formed in 1966 and the previous
joint owners, Pieterpikzonen BV, a leading Dutch seed
company, and Richard and Bella Flood, ran the
business since 1996.
Andrew Gould was previously finance director of the
Jockey Club for 22 years and is currently chief
executive of Verand Consulting. He believes the
business offers strong growth opportunities both at
home and abroad. He says: “We all like to be more
careful about what we eat these days and there is
certainly a trend towards growing your own food in the
UK. Many gardeners are using pot luck when planting
seeds and could be deterred from trying again if their
plants fail. We believe the UK is a real untapped
market for this product, but there are also strong
growth opportunities in our current international
markets and, potentially, beyond.”
Gary Burton, HSBC Regional Commercial Director for
the South West and Wales, added: “The management
team behind this MBI have significant business
experience and delivered a clear and coherent vision of
where they want to take the company, which has
already enjoyed strong success and operates in a
growth market. These factors present a compelling
case for investment and we were pleased to back the
management team in this MBI.
“This is the second MBO/MBI type deal we have
supported in the South West since the turn of year
following the Aero Stanrew deal in January and
although this type of deal is not as commonplace as it
once was, we are seeing an increase in activity in this
area.”
Duncan Sykes, Corporate Partner at law firm Foot
Anstey, said: “We are delighted to have worked with
Andrew Gould and the team on this deal. They clearly
have strong plans to expand the business which is
great news for the region. We look forward to
supporting the team with specialist advice in the
future."
Albert Goodman Corporate Finance Partner Tracey
Williams added: "It was good to work with a bank who
from the outset looked beyond the 'MBI' headline and
the conditions of the debt markets. This is a gem of a
business. Even in this climate, the usual prerequisites
apply and made this deal possible: impressive
management team, visibility of revenues and an
attractive and growing market sector."
Howzat! Somerset County
Cricket Players Get Behind
The Cheeselympics at
Quantock View
Former England star and Somerset
County Cricket Club captain Marcus
Trescothick and batsman James
Hildreth have lent their support to
this summer’s inaugural
cheeselympics by explaining the
games in a series of hilarious
YouTube clips.
The Cheeselympics will form part of
Somerset’s first ever Cider and
Cheese Festival on Saturday 16th
June at Quantock View, Nether
Stowey, near Bridgwater.
The event is being promoted by
former Somerset cricketer and local
Businessman, John Francis. John,
along with Nadine Isaac, set up
Quantock View 3 years ago as a
wedding and events venue.
Quantock View consists of a
converted 18 th Century Barn,
marquee lawn and twin lakes, with
the Quantock hills surrounding. John
explains: “Quantock View is a true
Somerset rustic venue with fantastic
views of the surrounding
countryside, a magical feel to the
place with the ability to hold both
small and large numbers for any
kind of event.”
(From Left to right) John Francis,
James Hildreth, Marcus Trescothick
and then on right is Richard Villis
(Cricketer Farm)
Quantock View’s Event Director and
co-owner, Nadine Isaac, previously
worked for Peter de Savry in
Grenada as a Project and Events
manager, before leaving for London
where she helped organise the
London Fashion Week and
International Motor Show. This was
before she had reached 24 years
old!
“We’ve wanted to create a cider and
cheese festival for some years and
now it’s finally going to happen. The
thought of listening to good music,
having lovely local food while
sipping cider next to our stunning
lakes gets me excited. With John’s
sporting background and the
Olympics this year we thought we
would put our own West Country
twist on the Games,” added Nadine.
Chamber Projects
Into Somerset So Well Connected
The team managing the new Somerset marketing
campaign So Well Connected has been extremely active
in the last month placing advertisements, press
releases and
outdoor posters
around the
country to draw
attention to
Somerset as a
great place to live
and work.
The So Well Connected campaign strapline highlights
the top class connections that Somerset has for new,
expanding and relocating businesses, including great
transport infrastructure, friendly and dynamic business
networks, growing connectivity to superfast broadband
with projects underway to secure this for 2015, and of
course an enviable quality of life.
“The marketing campaign developed by Impact Design
and Marketing, has taken major strides forward” says
Rupert Cox. “We have signed-up new ambassadors for
the campaign including Haynes Publishing, Charles
Hazlewood, Clarks Shoes and Sassi Holford and have
secured some great outdoor sites for promotion at Fleet
services westbound and closer to home at Gordano
services. These slots will be repeated later in the year
and supported with in-train advertising on Thames
Valley trains and further concourse posters. Our PR
agency ADPR are supporting this activity with some
great coverage in print and online”
In addition to the So Well Connected campaign, the Into
Somerset team has been working with Mendip Media
on a new Into Somerset promotional video. The video
will have its launch at the Somerset in Business
conference in May. It will showcase Somerset’s
innovative and entrepreneurial flair, with footage from
some of the high-tech industries that are operating very
successfully from the county. Mulberry will be featured
as a new ambassador for Somerset’s creative
industries and a new video case study for Mulberry will
be available on the Into Somerset website in early May.
“The So Well Connected campaign is the focus of the
marketing activity for the project, but an enquiry
doesn’t automatically lead to an investment.“ says
Rupert. “We work hand in hand with potential investors
to highlight opportunities and assist with issues as they
arise. Our relationships with both the public and private
sector are a key strength for us – putting into practice
the so well connected marketing message. With
reduced budgets, we still have a challenging few years
ahead to deliver inward investment to the county, but
we have made a great start with the campaign.”
Since May 2011 Into Somerset has welcomed 14 new
investors to the county creating 49 jobs, once all
Investments are complete. Over the lifetime of the
project, we estimate it will have benefitted the
Somerset economy by approx. £20m in job creation.
Premier Regional Law Firm Lands National
Award
South West Law Firm Foot Anstey has won the highly
prestigious Regional Law Firm of the Year award at the
British Legal Awards.
The British Legal Awards recognise the achievements of
law firms, teams and individuals who have responded
most successfully to the demands being placed on
them in the new post-recession business environment.
They celebrate achievement, excellence and innovation
in the industry. The Regional Law Firm of the Year
category was open to all UK commercial law firms
based outside London which had to convince the
judges that they were leaders in their chosen markets,
and had made significant progress over the past 12-18
months. Foot Anstey beat off significant competition to
land the award.
Commenting on the announcement, Managing Partner
John Westwell, said; “I am delighted with the result
which confirms the success of our strategy and further
extends our position as one of the region’s premier law
firms. We believe that this type of objective and
independent recognition is particularly important as it
helps organisations and professionals to choose the
right firm. We have grown by 30% in the last five years
and by 7% in the recessionary years and have invested
heavily in bringing the best talent to the region. We
pride ourselves on participating with our clients rather
than merely commentating and this, I believe, is why we
have been so successful.”
He added; “We understand that clients and
professionals who use and recommend us have a
vested interest in our success and we treat them as
valued stakeholders in our business.
“We have grown by 30% in the last five
years and by 7% in the recessionary years “
Our approach has helped to secure a growing regional
and national client base which includes Halfords,
Progressive Digital Media, Odeon/UCI Cinemas,
Screwfix and Which? Ltd. This year alone we have had
over 30 lawyers recognised as being leaders in their
field.
Clerksroom Help Create New Fundraising
Initiative
Chamber member,
Clerksroom based at
Taunton, have linked up with
local charity, Headway Somerset to create a novel
scheme called ‘Project 2012’ to help meet a funding
gap of £20,000 following cuts from Somerset County
Council.
The charity, which works with head/brain injury
survivors living in the county, have pledged that they
won’t let a cut in their funding mean a cut to their
services.
The plan is to get £20k in 12 months by asking 200
businesses, clubs or individuals to sign up for £100 to
join the special Project 2012’ website created and
designed by Clerksroom’s web team.
Clerksroom’s MD Stephen Ward said; “Our company is
already involved as members of the charity’s ‘21 Club’,
a corporate networking scheme with Headway
Somerset. I want to encourage smaller business, local
groups and individuals to also get involved. Project
2012 seemed a simple solution.”
“Brain injury can be devastating, not only for the
survivor but for their families too and I have been really
impressed with the services they provide at their three
Brain Injury Outreach Units across the county.”
Somerset in Business Conference 2012
Acclaimed Speakers Announced for the
2012 Somerset in Business Conference
Two renowned experts in the fields of business
innovation and collaboration will front this year’s
Somerset in Business Conference, entitled Innovate
to Succeed.
Keynote speaker Professor John Bessant, Professor
of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Exeter
University is a leading authority in the subject having
taught and consulted on technology and innovation
management for over 25 years. He will explain
exactly what we mean by innovation in business and
how businesses can grow by seizing change
initiatives and doing things differently, better, quicker
and more cost efficiently.
Acclaimed as one of Britain’s foremost experts on
Collaboration, inspirational speaker Nick Jankel will
talk on the opportunities in the age of collaboration.
In this talk, Nick will blend nuggets from evolutionary
science, sociology, history, neuroscience and
psychology to present a compelling case for how and
why the world is changing - and why every business
needs to open up as it does.
The Somerset in Business conference, which is
co-hosted by Into Somerset and the Somerset
Chamber of Commerce will take place at the
Westland Conference and Leisure Complex, Yeovil on
the 17 th May and is open to businesses of all sizes
and from all sectors, from Somerset and the wider
south west.
Innovate to Succeed will be the sixth conference
delivered by Into Somerset and the Chamber, and
the organisers anticipate it will be a bumper year with
delegate numbers expected to be in excess of 230.
Rupert Cox, Chief Executive of both Somerset
Chamber of Commerce and Into Somerset,
comments, “The Somerset in Business Conference is
the perfect platform to bring businesses together to
discuss the growing opportunities that Somerset can
offer. We have seen transformational change in a
wide range of sectors from how we manage and
deliver energy needs, to banking and finance,
technology and media sectors and these are forcing
companies to work and think differently. Successful
organisations will embrace this as an opportunity and
work with all their stakeholders to deliver exactly
what the market needs. But, this may require a
change in a company’s culture. We all know that
innovation and collaboration are the latest ‘buzz’
words and can mean a variety of things, but to a
proactive company it can mean success.”
Delegates will also hear from a number of local
business success stories including Nicholas Ames,
from Supacat, Chris Squires - EDF Energy and Andy
Knutt from Somerset Design & Enterprise Network.
