WELCOME TO THE JULY ISSUE Life is slowly getting back to normal and surprisingly the biking world has had two months of good sales. It could be a thing of “stop dreaming and go buy that damn motorcycle” where guys that were at home during lock down that were teetering on the edge of buying a bike or not now got prompted to just go out and do it. You live once and you must live it well. Let’s hope like Miguel from RAD says, it’s not like a dam wall breaking, it’s a big flood now but then nothing afterwards? I don’t think he is right, us South Africans are resilient people and we are survivors and it’s actually great to see how communities have stood together. As I type this I’m getting ready to go and drop off blankets with the guys from FAST to needy people we see in and around JHB. We just all need to do our part and being a sympathetic human is a good start. And you know with some adversities comes other opportunities which got me thinking. Is this not the start we have all been waiting for, I have spoken about it many times before, but why is everybody not commuting on small motorcycles like they do in Asia and the rest of Africa for that matter? And is this Covid epidemic not the exact force majeure we have all been waiting for? Think about it, by far the biggest part of our working economy travels to work and back in a taxi, 10 to 20 people sitting in a close proximity to one another, and it would seem quite often without masks, so the question has to be asked. If you could for the same amount of money that you are spending on a taxi every month (R700 would seem to be the average), spend on a HP with the bank on a motorcycle. Are you not making it safer for yourself and your family? I mean from your home (you don’t have to walk down to a taxi rank) you put on your helmet (mask), cut through traffic and voila, you are at work in a fraction of the time it would of taken you previously and in a much less exposed manner to the virus as what you did before. Add to this that you pick someone up that lives close to you and give them a lift to and from work also in safety and charge them the normal fee they would of paid the taxi and you pay off your little bike in no time. I really think this is our opportunity to get the population riding. Just look at how many more Uber Eat and Mr D little bikes you see on the road, there is a new industry starting and we should ride this wave. It’s inevitable and it’s coming, we just need to make sure we are on it and feed it. On that matter, once a biker always a biker, and by that I mean, I have spoken to so many people who rode a little while they were younger than got married and had kids, put bikes on the back burner and now all of a sudden are back into it so sorry for the years they have lost. What I’m meaning with this is that us as the people living and feeding off the industry need to get more bums on seats just to try it again a little, never mind about selling the same person a bike every two years, let’s rather have a concerted effort in getting people who have not been riding for a while back on the bikes again. Spending time on a bike riding around experiencing the freedom is therapy for your soul. You will never see a bike parked outside a Psychiatrists office. On that point, we have a few interesting articles in this month’s issue. Starting off with some road tests, Yamaha MT09, KTM 1290 GT, BMW R 1250RT and then some interesting Turbo bikes from Fast by Neels. We then introduce a new contributor on our MotoGP side going forward, Simon Patterson. He has unbelievable access to riders and background stories so have a read on his Lorenzo interview, we are very excited to have him on board. As July was going to be our Isle of Man month story and it did not happen, we bring you the history of the Southern 100 also run on the island two weeks after the IOM. The difference is it is a mass start, the pics we got were very old so we have made it look like an old story book. It’s a fascinating read. For all you guys who are avid MotoGP and WSBK lovers, we include the new calendars for you to follow for the rest of the year, it’s going to be busy. I can’t wait. So till next, go out there and ride that damn motorcycle.
