SKY is a sisterhood of teenage

girls all across Botswana.

Becoming a SKY girl means taking the pledge to define your

Sures - things you love)- and Shapos - (things you don't

need in your life. It's super simple. –

just send a message

to our Facebook inbox @skygirlsbw

and we will get right back to you.)

What sets SKY girls apart is that we stay true to

ourselves, and we are not swayed by peer pressure.

Whatever our Sures and Shapos are,

we stand by them, because those

choices define us, and

make each one of us unique.

What

is

SKY?

SKY

Pledge

I pledge to be true to myself

and what I believe in. To be who I am, not

who someone else thinks I should be.

I will say Sure Ka Yone to the things

that I am all about – like standing up for

my friends and following my dreams.

I will say Shapo Ka Yone to the things

I am good without – like smoking and

backstabbing. I will make choices that

are true to me.

I will follow my skyline.

I pledge to find my SKY.

Hi SKY Nation!

I’m Kelello, It’s an honour to be

writing the editor’s note of this SKY

GIRLS magazine edition.

Growing up and not having an older sister to

look up to and ask for advice from, I had the

SKY Girls Community to lean on in times of need,

and my mom of course.

I am grateful that I am able to be a part of something that played an

important role in my life from the time I was thirteen and moulded

the person I am today, 6 years later. Over the years, I have drawn

courage and confidence from the articles published in the SKY

Magazine and I was introduced to my personal heroes through this

platform like Tumie Nthutang. I hope that as you read this edition,

you are inspired in all the amazing ways that I was and still am. I

hope you know that you are capable of more than you can imagine

and that your heroes make you realise that through their stories.

I also hope you know that you have the power to shape your

world in whatever way you want. You are strong, beautiful and

capable.

With that being said, this magazine issue is all about the

heroes in our lives and us finding the heroism within ourselves.

As we say, not all heroes wear capes. Please enjoy awesome

articles such as ‘a hero in my life’ ‘My 2020’, ‘have a “super

period” as well as fun and exciting games.

I would also like to thank

everyone who contributed to this

edition of the SKY Girls edition.

Thanks for showing every young

girl and boy reading this, that

their dreams are possible! With

that I hope you enjoy.

#staytruetoyourself

Love, Kelello!

A new year a new decade. The SKY sisterhood is exited for

2020 and we have our new year resolutions. We love this

journey we get to share and experience with all our SKY

sisters. Inspiring each other, supporting one another, and

being our best selves. So take a look at what we as SKY want

each and every one of us to look forward to this year!

Mental Health

Re shapo ka stress. Re shapo ka acting

fine when we’re not. And re shapo ka

making other people feel terrible. Mental

health is as important as your physical

and emotional health. This year we’re

looking forward to taking care of ourselves

mentally, physically, emotionally,

psychologically, everybody! We don’t

allow negative people bring us down,

and we also gotta be careful of what

we say about other people. Re sure ka a

sistahood that looks out for each other

whether it’s about school hardships,

boyfriend problems, money struggles, or

even beauty horrors! We need to look out

for each other and protect one another

ladies.

Read more Books!

Knowledge is power. The one thing no one can

take away from you is your knowledge. You

can never go wrong with studying, finishing

school, and being educated. Whether you

want to be a model, a fashion designer, an

Olympian, a professional football player,

a musician, a business owner, it’s always

good to be educated especially looking at the

circumstances of growing up in Botswana

with less opportunity to be recognized. Re sure

ka our books. Reading is cool.

Expand

the SKY

Sistahood

The sistahood grows

every day and we’re

always happy to welcome

new sisters to the

gang. In 2020, we look forward to

hearing new sures and new shapos from

each SKY girl across Botswana. If there’s a girl you know

that wants to join the sistahood, welcome her with open

arms. Let her know what we’re all about and make sure

she takes the pledge to stay true to her sures and shapos.

Follow

your Dreams

Re sure ka reaching our dreams and

working hard to make sure they

come true. Whether you aspire to

be a musician, a scientist, an actor, a fashion

designer, a CEO, or even the President of

Botswana, re sure ka wena! The journey may

seem long and far-fetched, but if you set your goals, stay

disciplined, work hard, and build yourself without getting

distracted, it’s all worth it. Remember, it doesn’t all happen in 1 day,

these things take time. Invest your time and energy, even resources such

as money in developing your dreams and achieving them. If you fail and

fail, don’t give up, get back up and keep working at it. Successful people

have also faced challenges and setbacks in life but they are successful

because they did not give up. Also, stay true to your own dreams, no

need to try to be someone else.

Try

new things

Re sure ka breaking

out of our shells and

discovering ourselves.

It’s good to try new

things that add value to

your life, whether it’s a

new hobby you’re interested in trying, a sports club

you wanna join, DIY projects, or a new year’s resolution

you want to achieve, we say go for it girl! It’s good for

your mental health and stress release to be involved

in extra-curricular activities that interest you. Things

you enjoy and can also help you grow as an individual.

This may also help you find your people, the people you

can get along with because you share similar interests.

Leave fear behind, re shapo ka yone.

New Year, New Me - literally! I came

into 2020 as a legal adult (finally

18 lol) who’s in her first year of

university and is living on her own

in China. I like to stay on top of

things, so I made a vision board with

resolutions for every area of my

life for this year that I like to call

my ‘personal year’.

Self-Care

But what is physical health without inner health? Self-care is a

definite must this year (and forever), which is why I make sure to

journal my thoughts and feelings every week. This helps me analyse

and evaluate my emotional health and the effect whatever I’m going

through at the time has on me. Because self-care also means taking

responsibility of your reaction to events in life.

6

Into

Twenty

Twenty

Still on self-care, I’ve recently cut out meat from my diet, not only

for the health benefits that has to offer but also for my mental

wellbeing. A lot of people don’t know this, but meat affects hormones

hence affects your mood, sleeping & bathroom patterns, etc. Crazy

right? So, replacing meat with alternative healthy omega 3 fatty

acids such as olive oil & avocados increases ‘good cholesterol’ levels

in the body, which is a key factor in healthy hormones

Now this is tough on some days as I Live with people who meat on a

daily, but discipline comes in handy and we keep moving forward <3

Health

One of my resolutions for the year is

to be fit. Leading a healthy lifestyle

has several undoubtable benefits,

which I would obviously like to enjoy.

So, I’ve decided to exercise AT LEAST

4 times a week, although so far it has

been almost everyday (yay! :D) I have

a timetable which I follow. I make the

effort to do a short & light exercise

even when I don’t feel like working out,

because a little workout is better than

no workout at all, right! SO, this goal

is going well, so far!

RELATIONSHIPS

Cutting out meat is believed to be good

for spirituality, and getting closer

to God is on my to-do list for 2020.

I started reading The Bible more and

praying every day. It’s hard to do so

when I’m not in the mood but I don’t force

it because I believe anything spiritual

related needs to come from the heart for

it to be effective.

In addition to my relationship with

God, I’m also working on improving my

relationship with everyone in my life.

I’m horrible at conflict resolution, my

resort when experiencing a conflict with

someone is often to silently cut them

off, meaning no healthy (if any at all)

communication takes place. Which is toxic

because misunderstanding is inevitable,

so does that mean I’m going to silently

distance myself for everyone? That’s not

realistic. Which is why this year I would

like to be a better communicator and

practice better conflict resolution skills.

It has NOT been easy, but it’s been worth

it. I’m hoping to look back at the year and

see that I’ve accomplished most if not

all my goals and resolutions for the year

and that I’m in a much better place than

I am now.

Finances

Since we use electronic money

here, I try to save money by

moving at least ¥20 to my

savings account every month,

and the rule is not to use that

money until December. Most of

my money goes to junk food and

clothes I buy online so I’m trying

to learn to cook more dishes. I’ve

been watching a lot of cooking

tutorials on YouTube too!

Travel &

Fun

I’m not a fan of flights

and the turbulence

thing they do so I’m

not planning on crossing oceans

in 2020 haha. The most I want

to do is the Tokyo Olympics in

July, only for #TeamBotswana.

Someone has to scream for

Christine Botlogetswe, you

know? I have a lot of activities

I want to do within China, like

go to Disneyland Shanghai this

summer for Elsa and Olof!

Personal

Since I have a lot of alone

time, I’m taking it to

improve my qualities as a

person. The goal is to be

fluent in Mandarin Chinese,

which I’m already learning,

and Russian. I also started

following a lot of fashion

pages that post things

I like because I’m trying

to completely change my

style. My first step was

leaving ALL my clothes back

home hehe. I’ve been putting

my phone aside for an hour

everyday to control my

phone usage. It’s not easy.

Another one of my goals is

to completely change and

post more videos on my

YouTube.

School

I just completed and

passed my first semester

of International Trade &

Economics. I’ll be studying

for 4 years, so the goal is to

maintain those grades. The

plan is to become the next

Bogolo Kenewendo :) I’ve

made a study schedule for

next month to avoid studying

everything the night before

like I did last semester. Go

botlhoko!

7

Relationships

God is a really big part of my

life, and that’s the relationship

I’m working on more than any

other this year. My mum and

I are best friends, and we’re

both working really hard to

maintain that bond by video

calling countless times a day

and ask each other about

small things like what color to

paint our nails. I’m still not into

romantic relationships, so I plan

on showering my friends with all

that love I have to give lol.

Lorraine Nchwengwa

THE THREE

WHO

Inspire

ME

Like the cover says, not all heroes

wear capes! Here’s SKY Girl Lorraine

Nchwengwa talking about her local

heroes, 3 friends who inspire her every

day… no capes required :)

On the top of my list I will start with Anita Tlotlo Baliki commonly

known as 1_y oung_mama. The owner of AB BEAUTY. This

woman is a true inspiration, we first met at a class we took

together and became group mates. Unfortunately I had no idea

who she is but as we worked together, she never seized to amaze

me with her drive to get her goals accomplished. I always used

the excuse of I am a student and it is all I have time for. She

sat me down once and asked about my dreams and how she could

help and that is how Lorraine came into being. She told me I

don’t have to be one thing at a time if I can be everything I want

all at once. So today I recognise her inspiration and nagging me

to reach for greater heights. She has proven to me that I can

me be everything all at once, as she is a student, wife, mother,

business owner, artist, daughter and friend but most importantly

a humble inspiration and dream chaser.

10

Secondly, I am inspired by my best friend Thabisang Modimoothata.

A Limkokwing International Business graduate of 21 years old.

She is a power to reckon with, her motto in life is to keep getting

better and never settle for what doesn’t make your heart flatter.

She knows what she wants and she cannot be in any room where

she feels unappreciated. She touches hearts with her community

service work and how she never misses out on an opportunity for

her views and opinions to be heard. She inspired me to go after

my dreams and do only what makes me happy regardless of the

pressure and downs that come with life. To be honest she is the

reason I sometimes push myself harder because my best friend is

doing great and I cant let myself drag her down.

11

Lastly, I have to mention the biggest academic

inspiration I have ever known. It has to be Patricia

Moiteelasilo. She is a 24-year-old Bachelor

of Finance graduate from the University of

Botswana and just started work at Absa. I always

felt disadvantaged by growing up in the ghetto

and going to underrated schools until we met at

form 1, yes I know its been ages! We are from

the same background and she taught me how

to be happy with my own achievements and to

never ever compare myself to anyone or feel I

am disadvantaged by anything because only I got

the power. Her passion for excelling academically

always inspired me to do better, to date she stills

does because eventually people fall out of love for

school, but with her it is never the case. She is the

reason I want to pursue masters and doctorates,

you know how the hierarchy goes like.

Some girls say ba sure ka

Feminism. Le rona we believe

in providing boys and girls

equal opportunities and

catering to their needs

without discriminating

against their gender. Re

and treating each other

with love, respect, and

fairness regardless of

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

was featured on ‘Flawless’

by Beyonce, talking about

what society teaches

girls vs what it teaches

boys stating the

biases and double

standards.

“We teach girls to shrink

themselves

To make themselves smaller

We say to girls

“You can have ambition

But not too much

You should aim to be

successful

But not too successful

Otherwise you will threaten

Because I am female

I am expected to aspire to

marriage

I am expected to make my life

choices

Always keeping in mind that

Marriage is the most

important

Now marriage can be a source

of Joy and love and mutual

support

But why do we teach teach

girls to aspire to marriage

And we don’t teach boys the

same?

We raise girls to see each

other as competitors

Not for jobs or for

accomplishments

Which I think can be a good

thing

But for the attention of men

We teach girls that they

cannot be sexual beings,

Amazing Nigerian author

and feminist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave a Ted talk called ‘We should

all be feminists’ and Beyonce loved it so much she featured it in her song

‘Flawless’. Below are the words that Beyonce sampled in the song. Re sure

In the way that boys are

Clearly some things need

to change and we as a

to stay true to ourselves

and pave a way for future

girls to feel loved,

respected, and valued. iT’S

I couldn’t believe it! All my life I thought I was an ordinary teenage girl. But

then I discovered I had superpowers. Let me explain…

Keke’s my name. I am sixteen years old. I am a student at Mogoditshane

Senior School. I have 1 friend and I’m probably the biggest weirdo at school.

My birthday is on the 24th of July, a day I used to call the worst day of my life.

Wonder why? Well the answer is easy; it’s a day that made me miss my mother

more than any other. My mother died when I was three years old; so, I can

hardly remember her. And what’s the point of living without her, a half of me?

I woke up early that unwanted morning, 0600 am, 24/07/19. My big brother

Kevin lives away from home, in Phakalane. He always video calls me, about

every two weeks. So, he was the first to wish me a happy sweet 16. Soon after

that, my father tried to cheer me up by singing to me and cooking me a nice hot

breakfast. For a split second, I felt okay.

Well the second passed; I have to get back to my normal routine. I put on my

uniform and went off to wait for the school bus. On the way, I started to

feel a little lightheaded. “Maybe I had a cold or something,” I thought to

myself. Still I kept on walking. I arrived just on time. When I got in, there

was a soft buzzing sound. I figured it was because there were a few

people who were chatting but then a strange thing happened. I started

hearing loud voices in my head. As I passed each person, the voices

got stronger and stronger, along with it came excruciating pain. I

threw myself down on my usual seat at the back of the bus. Was

I going crazy? Well I sure thought so because this isn’t normal.

What the hell was going on in my head?

The voices kept getting louder as more students came into the bus. For some reason, it

was like I could read their minds. Actually… that’s right. I COULD hear the thoughts of

everyone in the bus. I was terrified - literally soaking in my own sweat. As if overhearing

Thuto plan to eat niknaks with peanut butter was not stressful enough, a group of girls

who did not like me got in. Angel, the leader of the clique, had a piece of cake in her hand.

A birthday cake… And was heading straight for me. As she took steps towards me, the

voices in my head started chanting “SMASH HER FACE WITH THE CAKE.” I looked around

and saw heads turned towards me but not a single lip was moving. It was then that I realised

that the voices were of the kids around me. I started freaking out, closed my eyes and

pictured myself in my secret hide out.

When I opened my eyes, there I was, standing in the abandoned treehouse just across my

house. I pinched myself on the arm to check if I was dreaming. Nope. This was real. It felt

like the world was spinning around. “I can teleport too?!” I mistakenly shouted out loud. Accepting

that I had a superpower was already giving me trouble. Wrapping my head around

two seemed almost impossible.

I ran home to find the house beautifully decorated with balloons written “Happy Sweet

Sixteen” hanging from the ceiling. My dad jumped out of the kitchen and yelled

“SURPRISE!” I immediately broke down and started sputtering out everything that had

happened to me that day. When I looked in his face, he looked unbelievably calm, as

if he was hearing someone telling him about the weather. He then went on to tell me

that everyone in my family has superpowers - him, Kevin, and my mom too. “I didn’t

want you to find out yet. Without the powers, you’re my little girl and I can protect

you from the world. I couldn’t protect you from your mum’s death but I guess I can

show you how to use your powers to protect yourself,” he breathed out.

“So this is real?”

“Yes it is kiddo. And you seem to have gotten a little piece of your mum in you.

She was a master teleporter.”

“She was…” I cried out, as my dad wrapped his arms around me.

“Happy birthday sweetie. She would’ve been so proud of you.”

From that day, everything changed, I feel like a whole new

person. I don’t feel worthless like before. Life has

purpose now. I spend my days helping the

hopeless and making rescues, you

know, basic superhero stuff. :)

“We should be teaching young

girls to take up space. Nothing

is as important as taking up

space in society and cementing

yourself”

We have some really dope inspirational quotes

said by smart, beautiful, hardworking women we

adore. From Mzansi’s very own Queen Zozibini

to the youngest film executive producer Marsai

Martin who co-produced and acted in her

own movie at only 14 years old. We also have

a spotlight from one of the biggest household

names today, the one and only Meghan Markle

who is just a ray of sunshine and such a force

to be reckoned with. We hope their voices will

inspire you in so many ways to stay true to

yourself.

Marsai

Martin

Zozibini

Tunzi

“A lot of people will say different

stuff like, ‘You CAN’T do it.’

They’ll say no before I even say

anything. You just have to believe

in yourself, and there’s a reason

they might say no, because they

probably haven’t seen it before.”

Gal

Gadot

“I think women are amazing

for being able to show what

they feel. I admire women who

do. I think it’s a mistake when

women cover their emotions

to look tough. I say let’s own

who we are and use it as a

strength.”

Yara

Shahidi

“I know, ultimately,

I want to help effect change;

otherwise, I would look at myself

in the mirror every day and think,

‘What in the world am

I doing with my life?’ “

About boys

Kindness is the No. 1 quality I look

for in a man. You can see in how he

treats anyone - from a CEO to a

housekeeper - and it’s a reflection

of how nice a guy is. Funniness and

confidence come after that... When

a guy approaches me, it’s fantastic

if he can make me laugh.

About

Fashion

Women who have

understood fashion and style

for so long have always

known it’s not about having

more pieces. I’ve always

shopped on the sale rack,

and I’ve always been the girl

flipping through the hangers

trying to find the best deal.

About life

My parents always told me if I believed

something was wrong, I should try to fix it.

But also be able to delegate, because there

are some things that you just can’t do by

yourself.

Self care

“You need to know that you’re enough—a

mantra that has now ingrained itself so deeply

within me that not a day goes by without

hearing it chime in my head. That five pounds

lost won’t make you happier, that more makeup

won’t make you prettier,. You are complete

with or without a partner. You are enough just

as you are.”

ABOUT

CONFIDENCE

I think so much of what we learn when we

get older is being comfortable in our own skin and learning

what looks good, and not being so trend-centric.

Feminism

“You can be a woman who wants

to look good and still stand up for

Have a

Super

Period!

My First Period

When I was 13 and waiting for my results after finishing

standard 7, I still thought I had a long way to go before I started

my periods. Even though a few of my friends had already gotten theirs,

I never wanted to get older so I hoped mine would come by the time I was at UB or

something. Anyways, it was just a chill day and I was lazing around when I felt my tummy churning as

if I had a belly ache, so I went to use the loo. That’s when I noticed brownish smudged dots on my

BRAND NEW yellow ‘Monday’ panties. I was so upset later on when the stain wouldn’t come off.

While sitting on the toilet contemplating how ‘I’m suddenly a woman!’ and wondering how in the

world women play sports on their periods, I resigned to calling my older cousin (I basically screamed

her name from the toilet and she came running, it was an emergency alright!) I guess she was kinda

helpful… She gave me pads and both her and my aunt gave me a small pep talk about hygiene

and changing my pads. That was easy enough. I changed my pad 7 times that day - every

time I felt like there was some blood I changed it. My aunt was not happy with my wasteful

behaviour since I’m supposed to use a pack for the rest of the week! That was news to me.

One of the good things from this experience was that I had supportive people around

me who didn’t make a big deal about my first period. Legit nobody cared, they just

went about their usual business. That gave me some confidence

that they believed and trusted I’m grown enough to take

care of myself.

22

Ke shapo ka

being embarrassed

I felt like there was some period

stigma. Not at school but just the vibe

around adults. They would make you feel

weird about your period or try to lecture you

about sex, like ma’am I’m 14, chill! We shouldn’t

feel ashamed about something that almost every

girl and woman experience naturally! Also, I hated

having to change my pad during class. Having to

take out a pad from my bag and walk out to the

girls’ toilets, I felt like all eyes were on me the

entire time and everyone knew I was on my

period and somehow that made me feel

a little ashamed or embarrassed?

Being a teenage girl is such a

battle sometimes iyo!

Ke shapo ka using

products incorrectly

I did not enjoy playing netball or basketball while

on my period. I felt like my pad would shift to

one side and I spent most of the game worrying

about it falling out of my pants or my dress.

Can you imagine? Also, I hated finding unwrapped

used pads in the girls’ toilets. Like can we wrap

our used pads using TP kana a pad wrapper and

throw them in the bin please? Thank you very

much!

Ke sure ka confidence

Periods are natural and there is nothing to be

ashamed of. You shouldn’t have to jumps hoops

trying to hide your pads especially when you go

change them. But if you’re not comfortable for

that yet, you can always have a small make-up

bag and put your pads or tampons in it. Or put

them in your school uniform pockets so that you

don’t have to carry your backpack every time you

go to the toilet.

23

Ke sure

ka finding

the right product

I use pads but other people use

tampons. I know someone that uses a

menstrual cup and she has cut costs in her

monthly budget. It’s your choice to use whatever

you want. Just make sure you have more

information about how to use it and you feel

comfortable and confident. During the first

and second day, I usually get a heavy flow.

But there are pads specific for night use.

They are much longer and cover the back

area so that you don’t leak when lying

down. Today, I buy 3 types of menstrual

hygiene products- day pads, night

pads, and panty liners. Being a

woman is expensive bathong!! These

should be FREE ah!

Ke shapo ka random timing

I heard a period comes once every month but mine

never came on the same date as the last one. It

was kinda frustrating not knowing when my period

would suddenly make its appearance. I named my

period ‘Prudence’ (Hallowed be her name *rolls eyes*)

She was so unpredictable and just as annoying.

So, I made sure to always pack an extra pad in my

backpack in case she made her grand appearance at

the most inopportune time.

Ke sure ka tracking my period

Today, I have an app on my phone called

‘Flo’ that helps me track my period. What

I found out is that a period comes every

28 days plus or minus, and you count the

first day of your period as 1 to determine

when the next one will come. A lot of

things can affect your hormones and so

it’s not always exactly 28 days, but if

you have a calendar, you can mark your

period and see when to expect another

one.

in sports

We all know that

taking part in sports is good for

the body and the mind! And of course

it’s always good to celebrate the

achievements of others. So here are

just a few of our favourite sports

superstars of the moment, we are

seriously in awe of their skills!

Remember this name – it will be associated with an

incomparable sports legend in the years to come.

Kenosi recently made history by being the first

female boxer to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic

Games. She was not only the first female Motswana

boxer to qualify for the games, but the first female

boxer in the entire world to do so. This was after

an astounding victory of 5 - 0 against Morocco’s

Bertal Widad, at the African Olympic Qualifiers, in

the Featherweight division. With a tweet praising her

of a job well done from the Office of the President,

Sadie can rest assured she has the nation’s support.

Simone Adrianne Biles is an

American artistic gymnast.

At the age of 23,

she has a total of 30 Olympic and World

Championship medals, and sits as the world’s

third most decorated gymnast.

We receive lots and lots of advice

questions through our Facebook inbox

and we’re always happy to reply. Thank

you for sending SKY your questions

and we hope to make your day better

every time. We love you xo

Larona cutie :* : “Hi SKY”

SKY: “Hi Larona”

Larona cutie :* : “I know you guys talk about

shapo ka smoking. Ne ke ipotsa if it’s ok to

talk about teenage pregnancy?”

SKY: “Yes love, everything we feature on our

magazine is what girls in Botswana want to

talk about. So wassup?”

Larona cutie:* : “ Thebathong I wanna talk

to young people about teenage pregnancy

because there are many girls in my school

that drop out because of it. Please help, how

can I inspire young people?”

SKY: Hi Larona, that’s amazing that you feel

the need to inspire young people and talk to

them about a problem you’ve noticed in your

school. Keep it up!

26

Let me ask you a few questions:

Teenage

pregnancy

1. Don’t you guys have this discussion in

your guidance and counselling class,

kana ko Moral Education?

2. What message would you like to send to

your school mates?

3. And lastly, why do you think the girls in

your school fall pregnant?

Larona cutie :* : “Well first of all, I think

adults like to pretend gore young people

aren’t having sex but then act shocked

when their daughters fall pregnant. It really

upsets me when many girls leave school to

have babies when they could be getting an

education. It’s not fair to not give young

people the right tools and information they

need to stay safe and prevent pregnancy so

that they can stay in school and finish. That’s

why I’m passionate about this topic because

it affects girls’ education. Gape we always

shame girls when they fall pregnant which is

not ok.

Even our parents don’t want to talk to us

about sex so I wonder where they think we’re

gonna learn anything. Some young girls are

taken advantage of ke basimane ba ko UB

kana those that are working just because

they are young and naïve kana ba se confident

to say NO! The guys ba ba bolella gore they

can take care of them and send them airtimenyana

or buy them stuff they can’t afford.

I have a friend, she’s 16 dating a guy yoo

ko Limko o mo bechetsa ka Nandos and I’m

scared she might get pregnant because she

keeps missing her periods. So I think we need

to talk more about this with our teachers and

our parents. Kana legale SKY can actually

discuss this on the magazine kana on SKY

Live?”

SKY: You seem like a really smart girl with

a bright future. We’re really proud of you

and the level of maturity you possess to

recognize such a need in young people’s

education. Thank you for being a voice for

many girls around Botswana <3 You bring up

important points as to why young girls fall

pregnant. Like what you said, to protect our

girls, sex education is necessary to have in

the curriculum and at home. Otherwise young

people are going to do whatever they think

is right but fail. We also need to make sure

boys and men take responsibility when it

comes to safe sex. The older men you mention

should be reported when they impregnate

a school girl. What’s a UB dude doing with

a high school girl in school uniform? They

should leave them to finish and graduate.

Do they not care about their future?

#LeaveTeenageGirlsAlone! You have ignited

such an interesting topic Larona and we hope

we can meet you so we talk in person. Maybe

SKY can come to your school? ;)

Larona cutie :*: “Woowww!! Thank you soooo

much SKY. I’m so happy we have SKY Girls

and we can talk about everything because we

need this.”

Bullying

27

Kamogelo Skai-kru bestie

“Hi SKY, please help! My friend is getting bullied by some girls

at school and I don’t know how to help her. She’s scared and

doesn’t wanna report them kagore they will bully her thata”

SKY

Hi babe, shem sorry to hear your friend is getting bullied. Bullies are so annoying.

You’re such a good friend reaching out to us to find ways to help her out. Re sure ka

wena love. Well, it’s good that she has you by her side. Sometimes people that are

bullied tend to isolate themselves and find that they don’t have anyone sticking up

for them. It’s good your friend has you at this moment. She should definitely talk

to one of the teachers (class teacher kana guidance teacher). These cases need to

be attended to before they escalate to bigger things. The girls bullying her are just

teenage girls, and they need to be disciplined for their nastiness. Re shapo ka di bully!!

Kamogelo Skai-kru bestie

“omg thanks for your reply SKY. I will talk to my friend. These girls

follow her after school and make fun of her. She cries sometimes

and it makes me sad seeing her defenseless and giving up ”

SKY

We feel you babes. It’s not nice seeing someone you care about feeling sad and o

le helpless about it. Just know that being there for her and giving her a shoulder

to cry on is helpful. Walking with her after school or sitting with her at lunch and

doing stuff with her will show her gore she has people by her side and that can

be enough. The one thing she needs to understand is that bullies tend to pick on

people they feel are weaker than they are and are an easy target. If she shows

gore she doesn’t care they might eventually get tired of it and give up. Bullies

tend to use your insecurities against you. So if your friend accepts her flaws,

or the things that she feels insecure about, what bullies say won’t affect her as

much. Being confident in herself and not caring about what people say about her

will lift her up. And remember, bullies have their own insecurities as well, that’s

why they tend to become bullies. They only feel better about themselves when

they bring others down. Sometimes we feel sorry for them too.

Good luck! xo

“I want to be a SKY Girl”

take the SKY pledge to stay true. Send

us your full names, your location, your

age, your number, and your 3 sures and

shapos. We will then add you to our list

of SKY Girls.”

Segolame GomezSwiftie: “how do I stay true to my sures and shapos?”

SKY: “That’s a good question. Well since sures and shapos are personal,

you have to be disciplined to live by them. These can also be your goals

in life. Some girls are sure ka education because they want to focus and

make sure to get good grades which is important in their lives. So to

stay true to this sure you have to set-up study timetables, and goals

for your grades. Other girls ba shapo ka peer pressure because they

feel gore getting influenced negatively by their peers would get them in

trouble or get them to break their pledge. So to stay true to this shapo

they make sure to keep friends that influence them positively. it’s up

to you to write down your own truth and stick your sures and shapos

somewhere you can see them every day as a reminder to stay true. We

hope this helps <3”

Impulsive Spending

In 2020, re shapo ka over spending all

As you go into this new year,

you may be dealing with some

doubts about your future and what your

next move is. You need to remind yourself

that you have overcome a lot of challenges

before and that is a testament of

the heroine you are. Take it a day

at a time and believe in yourself.

As the dreamer that

you are, you will start to see

some of your dreams coming true. This

will be followed by your hard work

of course. The heroine in you will

come out as you journey through this

year. Always remember that you’ve got

this!!

(Feb 19- Mar 20)

(Jan 20- Feb 18)

You are in a great space mentally

and you should be proud of that. As

you navigate through 2020, trust

your instincts and keep a close circle

of supportive friends and family

around you. Heroes are impactful in

their surroundings; be a reflection

of this.

In this season, don’t dwell in your thoughts and

mind. Due to the vastness of our mind, you may find

yourself thinking too much about your lives which in

turn may put you under pressure. You are doing just

well and you should know that all heroes need some

assurance from time to time- You are doing just

fine. Enjoy your 2020.

Jun 20 - Jul 22

May 21 - Jun 20

Everyone deserves a break and this

is not the sentiment at the beginning

of the year. Even heroes need to

reset in order to be in the right space

for the year of 2020. Take your time

with yourself. While you take time

for yourself, make sure that you are

productive and plan for how to achieve

your goals for this year.

(Sept 22 - Oct 23) (Oct 24- Nov 21)

Your ability to plan will

start to pay off as the strategies you have

put into place start to unravel. Remember

that the best heroes follow through with

their plans. Trust in those plans and execute

accordingly. 2020 is a great year for you.

(Apr 20 - May 20

You may have had

misunderstandings will friends or

people close to you in the past, but what matters

is what you did after making mistakes. Regrets are

self- imprisonment, so forgive yourself and step into

this year with a clear view of who you are. You are

bright and caring; an energy that everyone needs.

35

(Mar 21- Apr 19)

You are currently killing it

and slaying your goals. Even though

this is all amazing for you, don’t keep your

loved ones out of the loop all in the name

of focusing on yourself. As a hero, you must

remember that you are who you are because

of the ones around you.

Embrace the support.

You may not feel fully

connected to your surroundings right

now and this is perfectly fine. It is a way

of your body telling you that there is more

coming your way. There is a need for you

to prepare yourself for the next stage you

want. Preparation is key to all heroes and

while you’re at it, keep a

positive mindset for 2020.

(Jul 23- Aug 22)

Aug 23 - Sept 21

You have been worrying

about your life and questioning whether

you are on the right track. This is a reminder

that you are doing really well and not to

put so much pressure on yourself. Believe

in yourself and your

abilities because you are as great as you

think you are. 2020 is the year of plenty

blessings.

Lately, you may have

been feeling the pressure to get your

to-do list done and checked off. Lean

into this feeling! You are disciplined,

responsible and more than capable of

achieving your goals. Work at your own

pace but don’t be afraid to dream big!

2020 is ready to become whatever you

make of it.
