DENNIS SIMPSON
DENNIS SIMPSON
The Prairie Lily - Lilium philadelphicum. Found throughout Canada and parts of the U.S. It can grow to a
height of up to 90 centimeters. It produces red or orange blooms between June and August. It’s listed as
an endangered species in Maryland, New Mexico, Tennessee and North Carolina and as the Saskatchewan
provincial floral emblem, it is protected under the Provincial Emblems and Honours Act, and cannot be
picked, uprooted or destroyed in any manner. Photos are fine though. Cats are extremely sensitive to lily
toxicity and ingestion is often fatal.
Over the years, topics addressed have included: the
amazing songbirds, NCC easements, wildlife conservation,
the last ice age, travel across the plains,
flooding, community pastures, connectivity and
conservation, climate change and our future water,
Indigenous perspectives on conservation, and solar
energy.
Late last fall, Dave Phillips, a local ecologist and
Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) Board member,
provided the NCC perspective on the topic
“Conservation Priorities.” An NCC study shows that
conservation in southern Saskatchewan is nationally
important. About 30 people gathered in the renovated
multi-purpose room at the Lumsden High School
to hear Dave. Many questions were asked following
the illustrated presentation, and Dave was able to
answer all of them…and often elaborate. A summary
of his talk follows. Thanks, Dave!
Recent studies by the Nature Conservancy of
Canada (NCC) show that while southern Saskatchewan’s
natural habitats are among Canada’s richest
areas for biodiversity, they are also some of our
country’s most threatened and least protected. NCC
is now producing maps and other planning tools to
help focus and concentrate the efforts of landowners,
private organizations, and government on managing
and protecting the most important natural areas for
conservation.
NCC undertook a conservation assessment for
southern Canada several years ago. This study aimed
to rank the relative biodiversity and protected area
status of natural habitats in 77 of the country’s
94 ecoregions in southern parts of Canada where
human impacts have been greatest. Data sets that included
records from all 77 ecoregions were gathered
and analyzed to estimate biodiversity, threat and
representation in protected areas in each ecoregion.
Typical measures of biodiversity included species
richness, key biodiversity areas and species at risk,
while typical threats included human footprint,
land-use change and watershed stress.
The results showed that three ecoregions comprising
Saskatchewan’s landscape south of our northern
forests are in Canada’s top tier for biodiversity, threat and the need for future conservation. Careful
management of the remaining patches of natural habitat in our aspen parkland, moist mixed grassland
and mixed grassland ecoregions will be crucial to achieving national and provincial goals for
biodiversity and nature conservation.
NCC will use the results of this project to support the organization’s conservation work and its partner’s
efforts by providing a systematic approach to categorize ecoregions based on biodiversity values,
threats and conservation responses. While the significant biodiversity and threat levels are wellknown
in many southern ecoregions, this analysis gives new information and evidence to support the
urgency of conservation in these areas.
Most Canadian ecoregions with higher biodiversity and higher threat have a high proportion of
private lands and few protected areas. This is particularly true in the aspen parkland, moist mixed
grassland and mixed grassland ecoregions of southern Saskatchewan. Conservation organizations
working in these ecoregions will need to work cooperatively with landowners and continue to protect
key sites for biodiversity.
Achieving Saskatchewan’s goal of protecting a minimum of 12% of terrestrial and freshwater areas
will be challenging in these ecoregions and may not be achieved for many generations. In most cases,
protected areas in these ecoregions will be small. They will require intensive on-going management
to maintain their biodiversity values and mitigate threats associated with small, fragmented nature
reserves. Giving greater recognition to private landowners for their stewardship in managing and
protecting residual natural land cover will be even more important going forward. On a small scale,
natural areas managed for land uses like riparian buffer strips and erosion control help by maintaining
and connecting residual patches of native habitat. On a larger scale, nature-friendly land uses like
managed livestock grazing on native pastures can play a crucial role in sustaining biodiversity at the
regional level.
About NCC. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the nation’s leading not-for-profit, private
land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species
they sustain. Since 1962, NCC and its partners have helped to conserve 14 million hectares (35 million
acres), coast to coast to coast. In Saskatchewan, more than 198,219 hectares (489,810 acres) have
been protected. To learn more, visit natureconservancy.ca.
Find A Way To Try Again
I’m squirming as I try to find a comfortable position while sitting on
the couch.
LIZ
My neck is itchy, my lower
back is bothering me, and
CAMERON
the ends of my braid keep
poking me in the chest. I’m
distracted by any little sound
and annoyed that my glasses
keep slipping down my nose.
My Chromebook is open on
my lap, I am looking everywhere
but at the screen and
I am thinking long and hard
about raiding the freezer for all
the ice cream I can find. It is the fifth restart of
this column, and I have deleted more words than
I care to think about. The whole process has me
feeling like I did when I was 8 months pregnant
in the middle of a heatwave: crabby and not to be
trifled with.
Writer’s block - when an author has problems
producing a piece of work or coming up
with ideas - can be frustrating, maddening and
downright painful, especially if you are labouring
under a deadline. It can last for days, months -
even years - and some people never recover. I am
lucky in that I am not dependent on this column
for my livelihood - I write because I enjoy it - so
if I go through a stage like I’m going through
now, where I simply can’t seem to pull sentences
together, I don’t run screaming through the
streets tearing at my hair. (Although the thought
has definitely crossed my mind.) It does bother
me when I am unable to hit my target date, but
if March and April taught me nothing else, I’ve
learned to be gentle with my psyche.
Three months ago, many of us were rather
abruptly forced into confinement that restricted
our movements and reduced our extracurricular
activities to almost nothing. Before that,
most people ran their children to and from
school, dance, hockey, soccer, and themselves to
and from, work, the gym, sporting events and
weekend get-togethers with friends. Because
the element of life that binds us together is our
ability to experience things and then share those
experiences with each other, losing it leaves us
without much to talk about. (Except the weather,
of course. It is the one absolute fascination, with
no political or religious affiliation, that we truly
have in common.) My point is that when your
world shrinks as much as all of ours has, it is not
surprising that we repeat ourselves in conversation,
or find ourselves without a whole lot to say
or, worse, not knowing how to say anything at all.
This is not the first time that I have struggled
with a column. When I wrote for the Waterfront
Press, I tried any and all suggestions to get my
verbal juices flowing again when I found myself at
a loss for words. I went for walks, rearranged the
furniture, re-read Sherlock Holmes (even though
I have memorized every case he ever solved), listened
to classical music, made and drank coffee,
Canadians see increase in
dangerous driving during
pandemic, CAA finds
Ottawa – A majority of Canadians
(59 percent) are reporting an increase
in dangerous driving while COVID-19
restrictions have been in place,
according to a new poll by the Canadian
Automobile Association (CAA)
released today.
“These numbers are concerning,”
says Ian Jack, vice-president of public
affairs, CAA National. “It doesn’t
matter if you are going for a 5-minute
trip to the store, or a 30-minute scenic
drive, keeping each other safe on and
around our roads should always be top
of mind.”
Speeding drivers top the list, with
44 percent of Canadians saying they
saw someone speeding in the last few
months. Other top observed behaviours,
in order, include aggressive
driving, drivers using or talking on
their phones behind the wheel, and
reckless driving. Going back to at least
2013, speeding has not cracked the
top 5 list in polls where CAA asked
Canadians to rank unsafe driving behaviours.
“In the last few months, we
have seen fewer cars on our roads, and
more cyclists and pedestrians, who are
most at risk when drivers are speeding
and distracted behind the wheel,” Jack
says.
Nearly three quarters (72 percent) of
respondents said they had been driving
less since COVID restrictions were
put in place, and among Canadians
who cycle at all, 30% said they had increased
the activity during COVID-19.
The latest CAA findings are based on
a poll of 2,824 Canadians carried out
from June 5 to 16, 2020. A probability
sample of the same size would yield a
margin of error of +/-1.84%, 19 times
out of 20.
Canada’s rising food insecurity problem
Food inflation is on the way up,
despite lower prices for other
consumer goods. And COVID-19 has
impacted incomes
Statistics Canada has confirmed what most of us
knew already: Canada is becoming a hungrier place.
According to a survey conducted by the federal
agency in May, almost one in seven (14.6 per cent)
Canadians indicated they lived in a household where
there was food insecurity in the past month.
In 2017-18, a similar survey showed 10.5 per cent of
households in Canada felt food insecure.
There are about 12.5 million households in Canada.
This means more than 512,000 more households in
Canada are experiencing food insecurity compared
Rural Municipality of McKillop No. 220
NOTICE
Public notice is hereby given that the Council of the Rural Municipality of
McKillop No. 220 intends to adopt a bylaw under The Planning and Development
Act, 2007 to amend Bylaw No. 376/2019, known as the Zoning Bylaw.
Intent
The proposed bylaw will remove clause 8.4.11.2 x in its entirety from the Zoning
Bylaw. The bylaw will also reduce the setbacks in Section 8 Table 5: Oil and
Gas Development from 1.0 KM to 0.5 KM. It will also amend the Zoning Map
referred to in Appendix A of Bylaw 3767/2019 to rezone lands as described
below from AR1 Agriculture Resource District 1 to LS2 Lakeshore Residential
District 2. Additionally, the bylaw will rezone the lands described below from
AR2 Agriculture Resource District 2 to AR1 Agriculture/ Resource District 1.
Affected Lands
The affected lands for the third and fourth amendment are known locally as
Flavel Beach and Belmont Beach. The affected lands are legally described
as Parcel A Plan 101344564 and SE-34-22-23-W2M. The affected lands for
amendment 5 are legally described as Parcel A Plan 10386166 which forms part
of NW-35-24-21-W2M. The affected lands will be posted on the R.M. of McKillop
website with detailed plans of proposed subdivisions and parcel pictures where
the shaded areas are to be rezoned. Maps of the affected lands are available to
view at RMofMcKillop.com
Reason
Due to the lack of criteria for Council’s decision making for increasing setback
distances for Oil and Gas developments in the AR1 Zoning district the clause
8.4.11.2 x and would be inconsistent with the licensing of oil wells, and The
Statements of Provincial interest.
AND
The setbacks in Table 5: Oil and Gas Development will be reduced from 1.0 KM
to 0.5 KM in order to be consistent with the Ministry of Energy and Resources
recommends a distance of 0.5 KM between oil wells with sour gas having H2S
concentrations of greater than 100 ppm and development.
AND
The lands known locally as Flavel Beach and Belmont Beach will be rezoned to
be brought into compliance with Bylaw 376/2019 and to have the proper zoning
district to apply to those properties.
AND
Parcel A on NW 35-24-21-W2M will be rezoned to the appropriate zoning district
of AR1 in order to bring the lands of the proposed subdivision taking place into
compliance within the zoning district.
Public Inspection
Any person may inspect the Bylaw(s) at the R.M. of McKillop office between the
hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 P.M. Monday to Friday excluding statutory holidays.
Copies are available at the R.M. website RMofMcKillop.com.
Public Hearing
Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday July 14th, 2020 at 9:00 AM in
Council Chambers to hear any person or group that wants to comment on the
proposed bylaw(s). Council will also consider written comments received at
the hearing (or delivered to the Administrator at the municipal office before
the hearing)
Issued at R.M. of McKillop No. 220 this June 15th, 2020
Signed: Brandi Morissette
to just two years ago. That’s more than the number of
households in the city of Ottawa.
StatsCan results were consistent with a survey conducted
by the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie
University at about the same time. In it, 61.0 per cent
of Canadians surveyed felt they had enough of the
food they wanted and didn’t consider access to food
an issue. That sentiment was at 72.6 per cent last
year, so we’ve seen a drop of more than 11 per cent.
Alberta saw the largest drop between the two periods,
at 21.2 per cent.
That means an additional 4.1 million Canadians
now see access to affordable food for survival as
a challenge over a year ago. That’s massive. And
the situation may well be worse by the time the
COVID-19 pandemic is over.
Surveys are likely to continue to point to a changing
Canadian food security landscape. The fall
should give us a better picture of the number
of Canadian households that will feel food
insecure.
The growing food insecurity is largely because
many Canadians have lost their jobs and
most of us face a future overflowing with uncertainty.
More than eight million Canadians
applied for the Canada Emergency Response
Benefit (CERB), but the program will eventually
end. More than $52 billion has been paid
out to Canadians so far. That’s equivalent to a
third of the province of Ontario’s entire annual
budget.
Rising food prices will likely make matters
worse. The food inflation rate is at 3.4 per cent
and could reach 4.0 per cent by year’s end. Typical
food inflation is anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5
per cent.
Costs to produce, process and distribute
food are all increasing. Physical distancing,
personnel turnover, training, additional shifts,
the use of personal protective gear, equipment
modifications and an increase in automation
all contribute to higher costs. To get food to
market, companies across the supply chain
need to charge more.
Grocers may be reluctant to pass on these
extra costs to consumers but eventually they
won’t have much choice.
Liz Cameron continued from page 2
The broader backdrop shows deflationary pressures
affecting many other aspects of our economy.
Many things are getting cheaper. StatsCan notes
that our general inflation rate is at -0.4 per cent, a
drop of -0.2 per cent from the month before. Clothes,
footwear, education and transportation are among
the components of the consumer price index that are
dropping.
Some say that since consumers are spending less
on other things, they will have more money for food.
But that’s not the reality.
Grocers have occasionally had to deal with food
prices rising much faster than the general inflation
rate but nothing like this. COVID-19 has created an
unprecedented simultaneous supply and demand
shock.
With lower prices for general consumer goods,
expectations will shift, leading to more frugality in
the marketplace. Current conditions show there’s less
cash in the market.
Grocers, other food retailers and restaurants will
have to fight for market share while dealing with
higher costs. That likely means fewer stores, less
stock variety in stores and so on.
Investments are being made in e-commerce by
many players – from farmers to processors to grocers
– to help make the entire supply chain much more
democratic.
The decoupling between the two inflation rates –
general goods and food – will make a four per cent
food inflation rate feel more like 10 or 12 per cent for
the average food consumer. Offsetting the effects of
higher-than-usual food inflation in a deflationary environment
will be a significant challenge for grocers.
However, some analysts predict that the general
deflationary phase is only momentary, and prices
should get back into their inflationary groove within
months. As people return to work, there will be more
money in the economy, and hopefully we see an inflation
rate we can all afford. It’s the only way to make
Canada feel less food insecure.
Let’s just hope these analysts are right.
Sylvain Charlebois, Professor, Dalhousie University
Dr. Sylvain Charlebois is senior director of the
agri-food analytics lab and a professor in food
distribution and policy at Dalhousie University.
and generally tried to avoid any writing at all. I researched what to eat when to sleep, how to meditate,
everything except what worked in the end and what others have consistently recommended. Write.
Just write. Put words down. Create sentences. Scribble. Muse. Brainstorm a possible work of fiction.
Create characters, anything. This is not about writing a Bestseller (although if that is your intent, the
theory behind what to do at this stage is still the same), it is merely a way to keep doing what you love
to do. At the very least, tell yourself all of the above, over and over.
As I have said before, I would never lay claim to being a writer. I know too many people who have
taken courses and classes, worked with publishers, obtained journalism degrees and aspired to
achieve a level of learning at far greater heights than I, to give myself those airs. But I do like to share
some of who I am with other people, and besides, writing is good for the brain.
And so, even though I was ready to toss my laptop out the window, I kept trying. Three sentences
forward, one back, followed by a string of phrases that sounded good, but were promptly erased because
they didn’t make sense when put together. It took time, but eventually, this column emerged, and
with a little self-encouragement I got through it without having a complete meltdown. Unfortunately, I
cannot say the same for the ice cream. It didn’t survive - but it’s sacrifice will not be forgotten.
Muenster’s Hofmann has big league dreams
He’s got the ready-made nickname — the Monster
from Muenster. Now. Saskatchewan’s Logan
Hofmann has the next few years to try to live up to it.
Hofmann is striving to join an exclusive group of
baseball players — major leaguers whose home bases
are in Western Canada. It’s a short list; current Western
Canadians on Major League
Baseball team rosters include
FROM THE
pitchers James Paxton (Delta,
SIDELINES B.C.) of the Yankees and Mike
BRUCE PENTON Soroka (Calgary) of the Atlanta
Braves.
Hofmann, a native of Muenster,
Sask., was chosen by Pittsburgh
Pirates in the recent amateur
draft, going in the fifth and final
round, 138th overall.
Normally, the major league
draft is a drawn-out affair lasting
40 rounds, but because of the
COVID-19 pandemic, it was shortened
this year to five. Being selected from among such a
reduced pool of players is quite a feather in the cap
for Hofmann, who was picked in the 35th round
of the draft last year by St. Louis but didn’t sign a
contract. His desire to improve his draft status by
playing one more year of college baseball paid off in
spades. A fifth-rounder commands a much bigger
contract offer than one chosen in the 35th round.
The 20-year-old right-hander was almost unhittable
in his final season with Northwestern State
in Louisiana, striking out 38 batters in 28 innings,
giving up zero earned runs. Yes, that would be a 0.00
ERA. His stats in the Cape Cod Summer League last
year weren’t as spectacular, but they were still impressive
enough for the Pirates’ brass — 27 strikeouts
and only five walks in 20 1/3 innings and a spot on
the league’s all-star team.
Being selected 138th overall means Hofmann
holds the honour of being the highest pick ever for a
Saskatchewan product. James Avery of Moose Jaw,
who went to the Reds with the 152nd pick in 2005,
formerly held that distinction.
“Obviously I had a good start to the year and my
goal was to be a top-10 rounder going into this year,
and once I heard (the draft) was cut to five rounds
I wasn’t too happy about it,” Hofmann told Saskatoon’s
CKOM News. “I kind of thought it was a 50-50
chance I’d get drafted still.”
There’s no timeline for when Hofmann might proceed
through the Pirates’ system. Baseball is slated
to resume in late July as a result of the pandemic.
But all of Muenster, all of Saskatchewan and fans all
across Western Canada are hoping he can approach
the levels of success enjoyed by Paxton, who has a 56-
32 record and a no-hitter in seven seasons, and Soroka,
who posted a 13-4 record in 2019 and emerged as
the ace of the Braves staff.
Bob Molinaro of pilotonline.com (Hampton, Va.):
“When baseball and the NBA return, does it make
sense to play the national anthem in empty parks and
arenas? Just asking.”
Molinaro again: “ESPN notes that the highest-paid
public employee in 40 states is a football or men’s
basketball coach. Clearly then, the priorities of the
other 10 states need adjustment.”
Comedy guy Steve Burgess of Vancouver, on Twitter:
“If the #Jays can’t play at Skydome their backup
plan is to move to Diseaseville in the state of Coronastan.”
Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “Florida
is still telling travellers from New York, New Jersey
and Connecticut to quarantine for 14 days. This
would kind of be like the Houston Astros making a
video telling the rest of baseball not to cheat.”
Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle: “Tiger
Woods vs. Phil Mickelson? Boring. Give viewers
the golf match they really want to see: Obama vs.
Trump.”
RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Reuters reports a
Overheard at the coffee shop
“I thought her account was for jokes, i
thought she was joking...JK...Rowling, she’s
just kidding, right?”
Washington Redskins linebacker Ryan Anderson,
on why he plays the game so hard: ‘If I can remember
my grandkids’ names then I didn’t play the game
Headline at TheOnion.com: “Staples Center employee
Tacoma broadcaster Mike Curto: “In 1920 Major
League Baseball outlawed the spitball. One hundred
years later, MLB is outlawing spit.”
Public-service tweet from Ottawa Public Health:
“We admit, sometimes wearing a mask in public isn’t
the most fashionable or comfortable choice. But some
people wear Leafs jerseys, so yeah. Just saying.”
Jay Busbee of Yahoo.com, on the tenuous resumption
of sports: “COVID-19 has surged back out to a
three-touchdown lead on us. But believe me, I know
it’s possible to come back from this kind of a deficit. I
am a Falcons fan, after all.”
Janice Hough again, on fantasy football: “Beginning
to think in 2020 the fantasy is that we can play
football.”
MINISTERIAL MESSAGES
Sometimes the Dog Bites
Ours is a rabid culture. Like meeting a dog
with a vicious and dangerous bite, operating in
social media can be dangerous. Someone finds
something another person has done offensive.
Sometimes it is mistaken identity, sometimes it is
a misunderstanding gone wrong, sometimes you
have found a mean person and regardless of the
situation the crowd pounces. Everyone is convinced
they are truly good, until the mob comes
for you.
There is a moral certitude that says the other
person is wrong and must be dealt with severely.
Companies are pressured to fire people from
jobs. Hate mail and death threats fly like song
birds darting about. Hate begets hate, in a downward
spiral that only offers a crash in the end.
The worst of it all is that there often is no forgiveness
available. There is no way to make the
situation right other than disappearing online,
effectively killing the offender. This is without
any kind of fair trial. It is fully scary, because
there is no rhyme or reason, just a fad in hate.
Without a way to forgive, society will just chew
through those it decides it does not like today.
There is no way back. People have went to get
names changed to try to move forward. The lack
of forgiveness speaks to a malice within that
festers and grows in a mob setting.
As a Christian I am especially saddened as
I watch events like this unfold. Not that there
are consequences to bad choices people make.
I believe that sin is real and this is capturing
social dimensions of sin. No, I am saddened that
there is no way offered to repent for the offender.
The person is held in their sin and it now defines
them, drowns them.
Christianity has always held that sin is bad,
whether it is sin against other people or against
God. The difference is that we know a way out.
We know that God sent his Son, Jesus, who died
for our sins and rose again. Our forgiveness is
based in that event, and it should affect our lives.
Indeed, as it is written in Ephesians 4:32, “Be
kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (ESV) We
forgive knowing that we are forgiven. We all have
sins in our lives. We all need forgiveness. Trying
to compare notes about who is worse, just adds to
your arrogance. Our need to be forgiven is humbling
to think about, but it is true.
We all have our faults, no one is perfect. The
problem today is that we seem to expect everyone
else to be perfect. We have forgotten to forgive
and held on to petty vengeance. We neglect what
change salvation implies for our lives. How do we
forgive others? It can be a long path for some, but
in letting go the Holy Spirit can do good work in
anyone’s life. Are we brave enough not to bite?
Rev. Rick Shott, Nokomis Baptist Church
Compact Kenton feels spacious inside
By Associated Designs
If you’re searching for a small
starter home with a spacious feel,
the Kenton just might fill the bill.
What’s more, it is equally well
suited to singles or families looking
to downsize their living space,
expenses and maintenance obligations.
Less to take care of equals
more time for fun!
homes surged in popularity
following their
inception in the 1950s.
For several decades
after that, they dominated
the home building
field. The Kenton
is an update of this
now-traditional style.
A slender post and a
bank of multipaned windows add
charm to its front facade.
great room that comprises
the living
room, dining room
and kitchen. Its vaulted
ceiling slopes up
from the front, crests
above the kitchen’s
work island, then
slopes down toward
the dining room and
the rest of the L-shaped kitchen at
the rear.
Light spills in through the expansive
front window plus four
side windows. Still more washes
in through French doors at the
rear, and another wide window
over the sink. The doors open onto
a covered deck, which could be
screened, if flying insects are bothersome
during outdoor meals.
Laundry appliances are conveniently
located in a utility room
that sits at the juncture of the
shared living spaces and the more
private sleeping areas. Owners’
suite amenities include a walk-in
closet and a private bathroom with
an oversized shower. Secondary
bedrooms share a bathroom that
has a combination tub and shower.
From inside the Kenton’s twocar
garage, you can enter the home
directly, through a door that opens
in right next to the coat closet and
front entry.
Another significant change
AG NOTES
CALVIN DANIELS
Over the decades, there have been significant
shifts in agriculture at the farm
level.
Most have been tied to production, the move
from horses to tractors, the move to zero-till
farming, the use of global positioning technologies.
But there have also been shifts in what is
grown.
Some of those shifts are based on better varieties,
rust resistance in wheat as an example.
But others have been because markets evolve.
Canola has become king in terms of Prairie crops
because of demand for its unique oil.
Pulse crops have grown in terms of acres planted
because new markets are being developed for
Canadian products.
It is likely the farm sector is on the verge of another
significant change, this one because a new
market is merging that will likely become a major
one moving forward.
The new market that is emerging, and quite
likely is going to grow significantly,
is for plant-based
protein, which is then turned
into products such as the
successfully marketed Beyond
Burger and Impossible
Burger.
With hamburger chains
jumping on the meatless
burger train interest in products
that mimic the taste of
meat, and offer the protein
too, are drawing attention. These
products were initially thought of mainly as an
alternative for vegetarians but are clearly finding
fans beyond those on strict vegetable diets.
We are now seeing dollars invested in infrastructure
to meet the growing demand for plant
protein.
For example, the federal government recently
announced $90 million to the Merit Functional
Foods plant protein plant in Winnipeg. The money
a, package of loans from Agriculture Canada,
Farm Credit Canada and Export Development
Canada, was announced June 22, by federal Agriculture
Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau.
The Merit plant will use proprietary technology
to extract canola and pea protein for human
consumption.
The Merit facility is not the only one being
built to produce plant protein. French processor
Roquette is building a pea protein plant in Portage
la Prairie, and other plant protein projects
are proceeding both on the Prairies and across
North America.
In Saskatchewan, the government will be
supporting the Bridge2Food Virtual 15th Plant-
Based Foods and Proteins Summit North America
2020 being held June 22-26.
“Last year, this event was held in Saskatoon.
The first time the event was hosted in North
America, and it was a big success for the plantbased
protein sector and larger agriculture value
chain in the province,” Trade and Export Development
Minister Jeremy Harrison said.
Such investments, both research and infrastructure,
hint strongly about the potential of
a new market for farm crops, and emerging
demand from consumers for new foods.
