Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe
even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Everything is a little different, but
getting a little less different now that we have outdoor dining.
But, in the interests of the public, we are still getting takeout
from our local restaurants to give you the gastronomic lowdown.
The place: The YB, niftily situated on Beach Avenue, between Perry
and Jackson.
The transformation: In this interesting new COVID-infected
world, there’s at least one silver lining, and that’s the explosion of
outdoor dining possibilities in America’s Original Seaside Resort.
Liked many other places, The YB now has seats on the sidewalk, thanks
to some forward thinking by the city council.
The company: Jack’s dear friend from New York City, Lawrence
Green, joined him and Diane for dinner. Since leaving the city to run the
food and beverage operation on Congress Hall’s Grand Lawn (see above
reference to outdoor dining explosion), Lawrence has been a somewhat
constant third wheel to Jack and Diane’s bicycle made for two. It’s a
good thing he’s decent company.
The conversation: All Jack and Lawrence ever talk about is
restaurants (with the occasional interruption to discuss British soccer
or the New York Yankees). Diane, naturally, is always thrilled by this.
The toast: Lawrence showed his usefulness by leaving our table
and heading to Collier’s, where he purchased two bottles of sparkling
rosé and a couple of those ready-to-drink Manhattan mixes (another
byproduct of COVID). We clinked glasses with the lovely Brandon
Stickle, who’s running The YB these days, along with chef Peter
Gingerelli. Diane desisted, as part of her dry June.
The food: As Lawrence headed off for Collier’s, he asked us to order
him pork belly to start and Atlantic cod for main. Which is exactly what
Jack had planned. Instead, Jack got tuna tacos to start and then decided
he couldn’t resist the cod, either. Diane left out the starter and went
straight for the yellowfin tuna. The food, as always, pleased the palates.
The conclusion: Outdoor dining really is the way to go and we
hope that the city council will seriously look into incorporating at least
some of the setups available to restaurants right now. In the meantime,
cheers and don’t forget to mask up!
SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its
third art exhibition of the 2020 season,
featuring three regional solo artists and
their work. “Outside/Inside,” by Greg
Bennett, “Time & Solidarity,” by Jim
Inzero, and “Forward Reflections,” by Penelope
El-Dalati will be on view at SOMA NewArt
Gallery July 11 through August 9.
Bennett has traveled and painted throughout
the Mid-Atlantic states and his paintings
are mechanical while still revealing emotional
views of his subjects and life. Inzero returns
for his seventh exhibit at SOMA and his collection
of new encaustic paintings harps on the
notions of temporality and oneness. El-Dalati’s
collection focuses on finding inner peace
during times of so much conflict.
SOMA is located at 31 Perry Street in
Carpenters Square Mall, Cape May. There will
be no opening artist receptions for the 2020
season due to COVID-19.
For additional information, please contact
the gallery by emailing stevesomagallery@
“Peaks and Valleys” by Jim Inzero and more can be seen at the gallery beginning July 11.
Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Salutations, nerds. And welcome to
another lesson on “How to Write
1200 Words and Say Nothing.” Beard
& Weight Watch: I’ve reached Level
9 Beard Insecurity. Meaning, does
it look full and distinguished like a founding
father, or does it look like a muskrat curled
up and died on my face? I’m torn between
impulses to shave it all off but also to never
shave again. Such conflict! I think I’ll let it
live… for now.
Conversely, I’m pretty pissed off about
my weight this week. I’m still holding steady
at 234, but after a couple of grueling wait
shifts at Exit Zero Filling Station Wednesday
and Thursday, I’d finally dipped under 230
(229.5) for the first time in…. I don’t know
how long, but it’s a long time. In that context,
234 is kind of a drag, but on the bright side,
I’ve kept 240 in the rearview for several consecutive
weeks now and, most importantly,
I’ve made Jack Wright the fattest guy working
at Exit Zero.
In that brief, shining 5-minutes around
1130pm Thursday when I was 229.5, I was
pondering what I’d done to get so low when it
dawned on me; I had dinner with Tim Joyce at
EZFS (the Burger Bowl, delicious) on Monday
after our canceled Rusty Nail gig (fire alarm,
all is well and they were back in operation the
following day), yada yada yada, half a Wawa
breaded chicken sandwich and a bowl of stale
Herr’s after work on Thursday. (The sandwich
and chips were my first carbs of the week
and sooooo gross and sooooo delicious.) My
only food between those meals was a jar
of cashews. I also took nearly 40,000 steps
during my two wait shifts. (Just typing all that
made me feel a little faint…) Anyway, I’ll take
it as a positive that I have to remind myself to
eat every couple of days.
And those wait shifts were quite fun,
if your definition of “fun” includes sweating
your balls off for 13 hours, carrying 10
miles worth of hot ass bowls and plates and
your inner thighs chafing so bad they look
like a baboon’s ass. (Where do I pick up my
Pulitzer?) Most days I genuinely enjoy being
a server at Cape May’s hippest outdoor gas
station Indian restaurant. Other days I’m a
miserable prick who if he has to take one
more step his feet are going to fall off.
Somewhere in this madness I met Regan,
Brent and Jody. As the wait for food stretched
out a bit, they stayed cool with an assortment
of Whiskey Punches and Cape May Brewing
Co. beers. And when their food arrived, Regan
could not stop marveling at our seven-inch
weiner. (Okay, that’s a fifth-grade level joke,
but also a great opportunity to tell you the
People keep telling me how
much they like the outgoing
phone message I co-wrote and
recorded. This really puts the
pressure on as I have to record
a new one this week. I can only
hope it lives up to your lofty
standards. (Also, I’ll write and
for… $100? 50? Ok, $20. “Hi, I’m
Terry O’Brien. You may remember
me from such voicemails as
Exit Zero Filling Station and Exit
Zero Filling Station Part 2…”
Incredibly Good Person of
the Week: On delivery last week,
I stopped into Ostara’s for a cup
out on delivery and, although
they play 200% too much reggae
and once an hour you have to
sit through what is generally the
cringe volcano of “now a song
by a local Cape May artist”, it’s
been pretty great. While I wish
they played more newer stuff, I
love having to ask my Google,
“What song is this?” I was also
never much of a Doo-Wop guy,
but Eddie Castegnetta’s oldies
show was a goddamn delight.
I couldn’t name three of the 50
songs I heard, but it was just
great. Also? “60 Minute Man”
was waaaaaaaaay ahead of its
time. So dirty.
I think I wrote about my
of coffee (it’s also where I got new Kobalt cordless electric
my nifty Fourth of July mask so
I could show my true patriotism
while being told what to do by my
overreaching government) and
ran into Cape May’s city manager
Jerry Inderwies, Jr. Since he’s
there literally every time I stop
in, I first asked, “Don’t you have
a job?” and then insisted on paying
for his and his partner who
shall remain nameless because I
don’t know his name’s coffee. No,
lawnmower. I absolutely love it,
but the battery doesn’t last long
enough to cut my yard on one
charge, so I bought a back-up
battery. $150! The damn mower
cost $250! I was venting to EZFS
neighbor Fay Kara (a fellow
Kobalt user) who said, “Why
didn’t you just get the weed
whacker? It costs about $150 and
comes with a battery.” I…. just…
I… dammit!
don’t thank me. I don’t do it for I think the Washington
the accolades. I do it out of pure Redskins should absolutely
altruism because I’m such a good
person. I really, really am.
I’ve used just about every
change their name... to the D.C.
Redskins.
My wife Cathrine says to me,
depends on if I’ve eaten breakfast,
how much coffee I’ve had,
any ruffage in my previous night’s
dinner and other factors you now
wish you didn’t know about) and
I’ve come to the conclusion that
the Shell station just over the
bridge has the highest quality TP
you’ll find in any of the terlets in
the seven territories I cover. The
rest room is also always neat and
tidy. Not, like, eat off the floor
clean. But perfectly acceptable
for a road side gas station. So,
grow out during the shutdown” I
said, “I did.”
I just finished Armada by
Ernest Cline. It is equal parts
Ender’s Game (my personal favorite
book) and The Last Starfighter
(an underseen 80s gem) and
trades in the same Boss Level
nostalgia as Ready Player One, his
previous book. It’s not great. I’m
not sure it’s even good. But it
took a week to read in the bathroom
(what’s with all the potty
stuff this week?) and I didn’t hate
myself when I finished it, so…
Kudos Jerry and Crew on a job yeah.
Under our current conditions, I knew
this day might come! I’m going to
review the same show for a second
time. The show is Fringe, and
I reviewed its first season a few
weeks ago here. Now, I’ve watched the entire
series — 100 episodes over five years. A Fringe
bender, you might say! More than 4,000 minutes
or 30+ movies!
The show is science fiction. Recall from
my last review that Fringe is about FBI’s Fringe
Division investigating paranormal activity —
like X-Files. Not into that show or sci-fi? That’s
okay. I’m not a die-hard fan either. My wife
loves the genre though and if you think you’re
going to watch what equates to 30+ movies
alone, think again!
We are both die-hard fans of good writing,
excellent character development, interesting
plot turns and engaging storylines.
What started out very much like X-Files —
individual episodes about freakish mysteries
— turned into a whole subculture that kept
fans engaged. This fan base was so engaged
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
that when FOX wanted to cancel after a third
season, there was a revolt. The final two seasons
added were among the best!
Crossing alternate universes and changing
reality was just the beginning. From there,
we jumped timelines, erased characters from
history and saw the rise of what appeared
to be a few benevolent oddball observers to
become an imperial empire of mind-bending
dictators.
On a mirror Earth, we meet all the counterparts
to characters on this side. The main
characters are a mad scientist (John Noble),
his genius son (Joshua Jackson) and an FBI
agent with untapped special abilities (Anna
Torv). These are complex and engaging characters
— counterparts overall are played
beautifully differently.
Over there, the primary mode of air transportation
is zeppelins, their Statue of Liberty
is cast in what appears to be bronze and the
twin towers still stand. Newark’s Penn Station
is also called Springsteen Station. There’s no
deep dive into these differences, all we know
is that this other world is falling apart. They’ve
looked toward us to determine they must
destroy us to save themselves.
Far out? You bet, but so relatable! Did you
ever have deja vu? Or ask yourself, “What if
I had done things differently — could my life
have changed?” That’s a part of the appeal.
Did they fill every gap? Not really. Did they
engage us enough to suspend disbelief and
stay on the edge of your seat? Absolutely!
The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
Say this aloud: “Canadian.” And then
again, adding “I am a…” at the beginning.
How does it make you feel?
Proud? Ashamed? Slightly tingly? I’ll
wager it made you feel less unclean
than if you had just said “I am a Wildwooder,”
though, so don’t you go judging.
I ask because I was responsible for finding
and naming Canada, and so feel some regret.
Not that I don’t think that country is not a fine
one – it is magnificent, wild, safe, prosperous
and still does not have a majority of French
people living there (now, what was my very
funny joke about the difference between the
French and toast, again… damn, I always forget
the punchline..) but yet somehow, to say “I
am Canadian” is met with at best politeness
and all too often with tittering behind the
hand. And I fear that I gave the country too
NICE a name.
Of course I blame those wretched
Scotchmen, a dozen of whom were with me
when I discovered Canada. We were a slightly
military expedition, in that we carried enough
beads and trinkets to purchase any amount of
land from it’s rightful, erm, original inhabitants,
and enough muskets to encourage those
natives to accept the deal before the terms
changed and they would no longer be offered as
favourable an exchange rate as 100,000 acres
for a tiny tin hatchet and a pocket mirror.
So we had just arrived in what was to be
Canada, after mistakenly taking a left after El
Dorado (yes, it was THAT El Dorado, the lost
fabled city of gold. We buried it before we left,
so those infernal wandering Spaniard would
not find and steal it, but then the Young Albert
of the time ate the map and it remains lost forever
– which is rather unfortunate, given my
rough calculation that it consisted of approximately
30 million tons of gold).
Anyway, we stumbled upon a mountainous
paradise, with rivers full of leaping
salmon, the air so thick with game birds that a
single shot into the sky brought down enough
to feast on for a year, and we decided to go
ahead and keep it. My Scotch guide, sensing
that he might be in for a share of this vast land,
was overly solicitous, as are all that grasping
race when they sense profit, and every time I
went to do something, would shout “Can ah
dae that fur ye?” which roughly translates to
an offer of assistance. So often did I hear that
guttural phrase that when it came to naming
the country, it was all I had in my head,
and “Can Ah Dae” became in time Canada.
And I think that helpful tone has damned the
nation’s reputation. If only I had made it a more
negative “Cannae Dae,” they would be better
regarded today.
How do you reward the pets that are
part of your family? Bring them along
on your Cape May vacation!
Americans have loved pets
since our beginning. At first, colonists
brought cats and dogs with them to
be working animals, and adopted squirrels,
raccoons and songbirds as comfort animals,
even dressing them in costume and including
them in portraits. Most American presidents
kept pets, both for work and comfort. George
Washington had a hound named Sweetlips
and John Adams a mutt named Satan. James
Madison’s parrot Polly outlived him but kept
his secrets. Lincoln’s “Fido” popularized the
name. Theodore Roosevelt and his six kids
kept a menagerie including lizards, guinea pigs
and snakes, along with several mutts. Troubled
presidents have used their dogs as a distraction
— scandal-plagued Warren G. Harding
brought his Laddie Boy to all events, including
golfing trips and Cabinet meetings, where he
had his own chair. FDR defended his dog Fala
from accusations that president had used a
The Activity Column
Navy destroyer to transport him at taxpayer
expense, saying, “I have a right to resent, to
object, to libelous statements about my dog.”
The Checkers speech prolonged Nixon’s career.
Clinton’s Socks was a rare White House cat to
gain fame, and Barney softened the image of
George W. Bush at the start of the Iraq War.
Currently, about 60% percent of Americans
have a pet, and in the time of coronavirus,
our dogs and cats have gone back to work.
THE LOCALS
They let the kids read to them, interrupt boring
video meetings, alert us to the arrival of grocery
deliveries, model proper stretching, and
serve as heating pads for sore muscles. Dogs
make sure we get out of the house with daily
walks, and rarely object to a second, third, or
fourteenth trip around the block — all this in
addition to their usual duties of keeping blood
pressure down and preventing us from talking
to ourselves.
We’re still learning about the risks of coronavirus
in pets, so be careful if you bring your
pet to town. It seems that we’re more likely
to sicken them than they are to sicken us.
Cape May already requires that you clean up
after your dogs, keep them leashed and off
the beaches and Washington Street Mall, but
you should also keep them away from strangers,
just in case. Traditionally, some Cape May
retailers are pet-friendly, allowing dogs inside
and offering shared water bowls, but use caution
during these scary times. Be prepared to
comfort them through the unofficial fireworks
celebrations that seem to be happening nightly.
As I write this, we are still a week out
from the 4th of July, by human standards,
the beginning of Summer.
Sorry humans, according to the natural
calendar, it is already fall.
The first southbound birds are passing
now. Sunday, June 28 was hot and sultry,
with dew points high. Monday, June 29 saw
diminished humidity as a cold front cleared
our area — the first cold front of fall. It ferried
legions of Short-billed Dowitcher and a
few Lesser Yellowlegs into our region. These
northern breeders have already completed
their breeding cycle and are heading for winter
quarters. Offshore fishermen may notice
wedges of Eastern Willet driving south. This
common salt marsh breeder is also wrapping
up the nesting season. Leaving young to fend
for themselves, the adults set out for South
America — young later follow. This staggered
strategy eases congestion along prime
migratory routes, and it is followed by most
shorebird species. Another Willet subspecies,
the Western Willet, breeds in the prairie
pothole region of the Great Plains. Taller and
more Godwit-like, these western birds fly east
to the Atlantic coast in July where they can be
seen foraging in the wave zone of Cape May
beaches. This subspecies does winter in North
America, found coastally from New Jersey to
Mexico.
In a few days you will notice that the volume
of swallows over swimming pools and
bayberry thickets will grow in volume. Here
in our town of Mauricetown, Purple Martin
are already gathering in their pre-migration
concentrations — not the hundreds and
thousands that will festoon the marsh grass
along the Maurice River in July and August,
but 10-30 per evening are gathering on the
Methodist Church steeple in town. In a few
weeks, southbound Yellow Warblers will be
distributed along the Cape after every passing
cold front, the vanguard for Cape May’s celebrated
fall songbird migration, which peaks
over Labor Day weekend.
If you want to pick up a migratory timetable
for the comings and goings of birds,
check out “The Birds off Cape May” by David
Sibley. It deserves a place on every resident’s
bookshelf right beside your “Sibley Guide to
Birds,”— the gold standard in field guides.
So, if you want to know how to tell the
difference between an Eastern or Western
Willet, turn to your Sibley. I do for identification
tips and the natural history. Both books
and many more are available at Cape May Bird
Observatory.
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV
Hasson family
The Answer Lady invites inquiries
from gentle readers on all manner of
relationship quandaries, matters of
the heart and ethics. Sit back, enjoy
a cup of coffee and contemplate the
wisdom herein:
Dear Answer Lady
During the COVID/Stay-at-Home confinement,
my husband ate non-stop. Literally,
his head was in the refrigerator every two
hours. At the same time, I took great care to
watch everything I ate. We both had doctor’s
appointments last week and I lectured him that
now there would be a reckoning for his undisciplined
behavior. Well, there was. He LOST
10 lbs. while eating everything in sight — I
GAINED six lbs. Tell me how this is fair in any
universe. He’s held it over me ever since. Tell me
why I shouldn’t go on strike and let him make
his own dinner, while I sit in a corner chomping
on celery sticks? — Weight Watcher
Dear Watcher
For goodness sake, let him take up the
burden a few days of the week. One compromise
would be to get take-out a couple of times
a week — you can each get what you want.
George’s has some wonderful Greek offerings
that are healthy and filling. As to the weight
gain/loss, it sounds like a metabolic issue. A
nice, long walk will resolve that. Get your takeout,
picnic in Cape May Point State Park and
then take a romantic walk on the beach to keep
fit and feel happy. Happy thoughts make for a
healthy body.
Dear Answer Lady
My foursome has played golf every
Wednesday at Cape May National for years.
We are all competitive and usually have a bet
going on every hole and often press — enter
sudden death — when we think we can gain
an upper hand. Last week, I twisted my ankle
and one of the more competitive players said,
“Wow, that looks painful. How ‘bout we press
this next hole?” You’ve got to be kidding me. I
said, yes, not wanting to look like a wuss, and
won. But still, was that right? — Good Sport
Dear Sport
You were indeed a good sport. Your only
option is to be on the lookout when your
“friend” finds himself in a weak position. For
example — when he’s looking for a “gimme”
on the putting green. Or the ploy of asking for
strokes — with the idea being his game isn’t
up to snuff. Golfers often use these edges to
their advantage, especially when there is a bet
in play. You might want to get to Cape May
National a little early to hit some balls and
practice your short game.
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
SCARLET is an energetic, young pup who
came to the shelter as a stray. She is working
on her leash manners and learning other
behavioral cues to manage her energy. She
loves chasing balls, squeaky toys and stuffed
toys in the yard. Scarlet would be best if
adopted by an active family with older children
who are willing to continue her training.
HARLEY is a three-year-old, 75 lb. boy who
likes to think he’s a lap dog. He came to the
shelter when his owners could no longer care
for him. Harley enjoys taking walks, has great
leash manners and requires a grain free diet.
He loves to be pet and would make a wonderful
companion for a family who would allow
him to be the only pet.
CINNAMON is an eight-year-old girl and
came to the shelter when her owner could no
longer care for her. She is a sweet pup who
loves people, going for long walks and she has
excellent leash skills. Cinnamon gets along
with other cats but is not very enthusiastic
with other dogs. She is house-trained and
needs a family who will accept all her love.
