House Extends PPP Application Deadline;<br />

On Tuesday evening, the Senate approved a<br />

bill by unanimous consent that would keep<br />

the program accepting applications until<br />

August 8th. Passing the bill by unanimous<br />

consent allowed the Senate to set aside<br />

procedural rules to speed up proceedings.<br />

On Wednesday evening, the House passed<br />

its extension, also unanimously. The<br />

measure will now go to President Trump<br />

for his signature.<br />

Under the program, the SBA had approved<br />

almost 4.9 million loans, totaling $520.6<br />

billion. Despite the program’s popularity,<br />

it had approximately $130 billion in<br />

unallocated funds when it shut down.<br />

With so much left in the program, some<br />

advisors question the point of providing an<br />

extension.<br />

The measure will now go to President<br />

Trump for his signature.<br />

More than 200,000 LGBT adults in<br />

California at high risk for COVID-19 illness.<br />

According to new research by Kathryn<br />

O’Neill, a policy analyst with the Williams<br />

Institute at the UCLA School of Law.<br />

Using data from the California Health<br />

Interview Survey, researchers examined the<br />

health and economic characteristics that<br />

may increase vulnerability to COVID-19<br />

for the nearly 1.7 million LGBT adults in<br />

California.<br />

Key Findings<br />

Demographics<br />

-California is home to nearly 1.7 million<br />

LGBT adults, including 1,646,000 lesbian,<br />

gay, and bisexual people of any gender<br />

identity and 109,000 transgender people of<br />

any sexual orientation.<br />

-The majority (92%) of LGBT adults in<br />

California live in urban areas.<br />

Health<br />

-361,000 LGBT adults in California have<br />

fair or poor health.<br />

-Many LGBT adults in the state have<br />

underlying medical conditions that elevate<br />

their risk of serious illness related to<br />

COVID-19:<br />

-216,000 have asthma<br />

-114,000 have diabetes<br />

81,000 have heart disease<br />

-At least 114,000 have HIV<br />

-134,000 LGBT adults in California do not<br />

have health insurance.<br />

-150,000 LGBT adults in California have<br />

delayed or foregone needed medical care<br />

because of cost, or lack of insurance.<br />

Everyone is talking about passing rent<br />

power to stay in our homes, communities<br />

must organize because overcoming fear and<br />

isolation is impossible to do on our own.<br />

We organize because we seek to transform<br />

people's fear and isolation into dignity and<br />

solidarity both in your home, community<br />

and on a statewide level. Organizing isn’t<br />

just sending out an email or creating a social<br />

media page, although those will likely<br />

be steps that you take. The organization of<br />

tenant unions are the building blocks to<br />

our translocal, statewide, and international<br />

Tenants Together/Homes For All tenant<br />

unions share a common vision and principles<br />

tenant unions across our cities, states and<br />

The Campaign for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum<br />

What was it like to live as a young Jew in Berlin during the Nazi deportations? This<br />

exhibition details the life of Manfred Lewin, a young Jew who was active in one of<br />

Berlin’s Zionist youth groups until his deportation to and murder in Auschwitz-Birkenau.<br />

Manfred recorded these turbulent times in a small, hand-made book that he gave to his<br />

Jewish friend and gay companion, Gad Beck. Mr. Beck, a Holocaust survivor who again<br />

lives in Berlin, donated the booklet to the Museum in December 1999. The exhibition<br />

centers around the 17-page artifact, which illustrates the daily life of the two friends, their<br />

youth group, and the culture in which they lived.<br />

To understand why Manfred Lewin, a young Jew in Nazi Berlin, wrote this book in 1941<br />

for his friend Gad Beck—to understand why Gad, 19 and Jewish, risked his life attempting<br />

to save Manfred from deportation—read these words from the play that brought them<br />

together. German writer Friedrich von Schiller’s Don Carlos: No Matter what you plan on<br />

doing, will you promise to undertake no act without your friend? Will you make me this<br />

promise? Friendship, valor, and the fight for freedom were the ideals of this 18th-century<br />

German drama. In 1941, Gad and Manfred played the starring roles in their Jewish youth<br />

group’s reading of the play.<br />

Manfred Lewin was born on September 8,<br />

1922, in Berlin where he lived with his parents<br />

and four siblings in the predominantly Jewish<br />

section of the city. The family lived in poverty<br />

in three little rooms not far from the Beck<br />

house at Dragoner Strasse 43. Manfred’s<br />

father was a barber and his mother Jenny, a<br />

former secretary, took care of the family. She<br />

often had to find other sources of food to<br />

supplement the family’s insufficient Jewish<br />

food ration cards.<br />

Gad Beck was born on June 30, 1923, together<br />

with his twin sister Miriam. Gad’s mother<br />

Hedwig came from a Protestant family, but<br />

converted to Judaism before the marriage<br />

with Heinrich Beck in 1920. The children<br />

were raised according to Jewish traditions,<br />

supported by the Christian relatives. In<br />

1934 Gad changed to the Jewish school<br />

in the Grosse Hamburger Strasse. In 1939<br />

his parents were forced to move into the<br />

predominantly Jewish section of Berlin. They<br />

could no longer afford the school fees; Gad<br />

started to work as an apprentice.<br />

PREFACE<br />

The following oral history testimony is the<br />

result of a videotaped interview with Gad<br />

Beck. The reader should bear in mind that<br />

this is a verbatim transcript of spoken,<br />

rather than written prose.<br />

GAD BECK<br />

February 16, 1996<br />

Q: Maybe we can simply start by you saying<br />

who you are and where you were born.<br />

A: Klaus, I’ll do that. My name is Gad<br />

(Gerhard) Beck. I was born as Gerhard<br />

Beck. I was born in Berlin, 1923 _ on June<br />

30, in the middle of the year in to so-called<br />

“Barn Quarters,” the ghettos. We'll come<br />

back to that later.<br />

Q: And were your parents also born in<br />

Berlin?<br />

A: No, much, much nicer! My father is<br />

Viennese and even one of the Jewish<br />

Viennese that is actually Galician. Their<br />

love grew bigger and stronger and when the<br />

war ended, they decided to get married and<br />

there it began.<br />

Q: And was it a Jewish wedding or a<br />

Christian wedding?<br />

A: Ah, that's a very nice question [laughs].<br />

Of course, you can have a wedding without<br />

either one. No, according to Austrian law,<br />

he was Austrian. According to Austrian law,<br />

both people must have the same belief and<br />

she immediately said she would convert.<br />

Her Christian family was very skeptical,<br />

except for her mom, the old mother, she<br />

said, “Child, it doesn't matter. If you take on<br />

a belief and profess yourself to it, then you<br />

have to live according to it. Then you<br />

are Jewish, girl!” And so they were married,<br />

and in a very religious synagogue in Berlin,<br />

in the Adass (ph) Israel, because the other<br />

Rabbi, who would have married them, had<br />

gone on vacation. So the colleague, the<br />

very religious one, arranged the marriage<br />

certificate, how it was done then in the<br />

Jewish religion, and of course they couldn't<br />

read it; the writing was very small and it<br />

was also partly in Hebrew, I believe, and<br />

they both signed it, agreeing that their<br />

children, should there be any, would be<br />

raised religiously, conservatively, until their<br />

thirteenth birthday. With kosher food and<br />

all that, and all that. They signed that. 1920.<br />

the White House and medical experts<br />

those of us not employed in one of the<br />

not a risk worth taking.<br />

Finding interesting and productive<br />

activities to occupy shelter in place time<br />

can be tedious. For those interested<br />

in the arts, both local and national<br />

galleries are going online to give<br />

virtual tours of current exhibitions and<br />

background information on the artists.<br />

Regarding specific gay interest, areas<br />

ASK ANY BUDDY is a virtual photo<br />

album that as put together fragments<br />

from over 125 movies creating a wide<br />

variety of rare footage from the 60s,<br />

70s, and 80s. It is a compilation of<br />

film shots of dozens of legendary, but<br />

real cruising areas, and general social<br />

spaces, that have since disappeared. It<br />

is humorous and sexy documentation<br />

of gay life following the Stonewall Riots<br />

at least how it is depicted in the moves.<br />

Considering more contemporary<br />

and international films about gay<br />

life, "Queer Japan" looks at the<br />

LGBTQ community in that country<br />

in Tokyo and other cities in Japan. It<br />

demonstrates that gay liberation has<br />

become more global than what might<br />

be current thinking. This film shows<br />

how everyday people are daring to live<br />

their lives and defy the norms of gender<br />

and sexual identity in unconventional<br />

ways. One of the artists featured is<br />

the most influential manga artist,<br />

Gengoroh Tagame, who has created<br />

numerous explicitly erotic drawings<br />

and paintings of gay life in Japan. This<br />

Trump administration moves to repeal<br />

transgender protections in homeless<br />

shelters<br />

The Department of Housing and Urban<br />

Development plans to move forward with<br />

a measure that would permit federally<br />

funded homeless shelters to house<br />

transgender clients according to their sex<br />

assigned at birth.<br />

The HUD proposal would reverse a 2016<br />

measure implemented under the Obama<br />

administration that built on provisions<br />

enacted four years earlier.<br />

A report in April from the Williams<br />

Institute, a pro-LGBTQ think tank at<br />

UCLA, listed 1 in 5 homeless young people<br />

identify as LGBTQ. The study also revealed<br />

that about a third of trans and nonbinary<br />

people have lacked stable housing at some<br />

point.<br />

Another survey of trans people who have<br />

experienced homelessness, published<br />

in 2015 by the National Center for<br />

Transgender Equality, found that 70<br />

percent had experienced some form of<br />

discrimination, harassment or violence<br />

when trying to find safe shelter. Twenty-six<br />

percent said they had avoided seeking out<br />

services for fear of discrimination.<br />

in Congress<br />

Ritchie Torres and Mondaire Jones, both<br />

Democrats, are leading in their primary<br />

races in New York’s 15th and 17th<br />

Congressional districts, respectively.<br />

The candidates said the COVID-19<br />

pandemic has taken a toll on their counties,<br />

which were heavily affected by the first<br />

coronavirus outbreak in the spring.<br />

In a 6-3 decision June 15, the nation’s<br />

highest court ruled that sexual orientation<br />

and gender identity are included within<br />

the parameters of Title VII of the Civil<br />

Rights Act of 1964. The federal statute<br />

prohibits employment discrimination<br />

based on race, color, religion, sex, and<br />

national origin.<br />

Writing for the majority, Justice Neil<br />

Gorsuch noted; “Today, we must<br />

decide whether an employer can fire<br />

someone simply for being homosexual<br />

or transgender. The answer is clear. An<br />

employer who fires an individual for being<br />

homosexual or transgender fires that<br />

person for traits or actions it would not<br />

have questioned in members of a different<br />

sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable<br />

role in the decision, exactly what Title VII<br />

forbids.”<br />
