Welcome to the 2020 Yearbook for the
British International School Abu Dhabi
Yearbooks are wonderful keepsakes. They collect all
our memories in one place so we can look back in
the future to recall challenges and successes and the
friends and colleagues we shared them with. Many of
us will have yearbooks from the past and it is always
a joy to look through them and think back to each
particular year.
Bearing the above in mind, a little context is important
for those who may be reading this in the future! The
year 2019-20 started as normal, but following the
arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic the school buildings
were closed and students undertook remote learning
for all of Term 3. Thus we look back on a year which
had two very distinct parts to it.
Despite the changing situation, the school year at BIS
Abu Dhabi showed students excelling and thriving
just as they always have done. From outstanding
academic achievement through to participation in
extra-curricular activities and trips, students continued
to benefit from all that was on offer.
What we also see through these pages is the incredible
sense of community in the school; students, staff and
parents working closely together to ensure the best
possible educational experiences for everyone.
This community aspect is something very special
with regard to personal development. From everyday
collaborations through to the specific features of the
Service programme, we see students helping each
other and also helping people beyond the school. Our
students are already making the world a better place
and no doubt will continue to do so as they grow older.
So to all readers, whether in 2020 or beyond, please
enjoy these pages and the snapshot of life that they
bring. “You are only young once” as the saying goes –
the students of BIS Abu Dhabi are certainly making the
very most of being young and gaining everything they
can from their school.
1A, where do I begin? I feel like we just got started
and then before I knew it, the year was over. I am so
proud of each of you and feel privileged to have been
part of your journey this year. Watching you grow
and learn new things each day has been wonderful,
but nothing will beat the silliness we had in our
classroom every day (snacky-wacky and lunchywunchy
have been particular favourites of mine)!
You are a FANTASTIC bunch of children with bright
futures ahead of you. Term 3 certainly wasn’t easy
but I was so proud to see you trying your best with
your learning at home. Keep it up next year, try your
best and you will go a long way!
This year has been very different for us all,
But how fast the weeks did go,
As I’ve watched you continue to learn and grow.
But now the time has come,
For you to spread your wings and go.
So hold your head up proudly,
I know that you’ll go far.
The one thing that I hope you remember,
Is to know that you are all special,
Special because you are YOU!
You’ll all be shining beacons,
Just being who you are.
2A, you have been an incredible class and I want you
all to know just how much I loved being your teacher.
It was an honour to teach such amazing, adventurous
and ambitious children this year and I will miss you all
MRS. COCKER
You are all very special children,
And you really need to know,
How I loved being your teacher,
And how fast the year did go.
You arrived in September,
All quiet and so small,
We were separated in March,
Except for our daily conference call.
You stepped up to the challenge,
You didn’t just give up,
You made me proud every day.
When all your fantastic posts popped up!
Without you keeping me busy,
Smiling at me every day,
The time would have gone so slowly.
And my days would be so grey.
You have lit up my days,
Shown me how great you kids are,
Reminded me why I love to teach.
Even though it’s from afar,
You have grown up in front of me,
Your little teeth have fallen out,
You are confident and chatty,
My little class, I would not be without.
I am sad that our time was cut short,
In this crazy year we’ve had,
You’ll always hold a special place,
In my heart and in my head.
I know you have to leave me,
The time has come too fast,
I will be here if you need me,
My memories of you will last.
Please come back to visit me.
As through the grades you grow,
Try hard to learn all you can,
There is so much still to know.
One thing I tried to teach you,
To last your whole life through,
Is to know that you are special,
Just because you are you!
6A, what a talented class you are! From beginning
the year as conservationists protecting the
rainforest; becoming surgeons dissecting hearts;
architects designing cities and explorers venturing to
Antarctica, you certainly have developed a myriad of
skills over the year.
Each of you should be incredibly proud of your
progress and achievements in Year Six. You
have all demonstrated resilience, perseverance,
thoughtfulness and curiosity. Cherish these qualities
and build on them as you progress to Year Seven,
where I am sure you will accomplish great success.
Be confident and make the most of all opportunities
powerful and proof that you are trying; mistakes
have the power to turn you into something better
If you think you dare not, you don’t,
If you like to win, but don’t think you can,
It’s almost certain you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost,
For out of this world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will,
It’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you’re outclassed, you are:
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools;
Thank you for another brilliant year, 8C. I enjoyed
every day. You are all destined for great things, keep
working hard and take the disappointments that
come your way well and you will exceed expectations
in school and in life.
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
It’s been an interesting year to say the least, but whilst
undoubtedly a challenge, I think every student in 9C
has learnt something about themselves. You have
learnt that no matter what life throws at you, if you are
willing to adapt, stay positive and continue to work
hard then you can achieve amazing things. This year
has prepared you well for the start of your GCSE’s next
year and no matter what happens in the next 2 years
you will be successful.
Since the beginning of this academic year, 9D have
brought joy and laughter to form time every day,
including the times when we met online and could not
be in the same room! You have been a delight to spend
the school mornings with, each with your own unique
personalities and all being highly valued members of
our school community. As you now look ahead to the
next stage in your school life, I know you will continue
to bring positivity and determination to all that you do
and I look forward to seeing you thrive in Year 10.
Dear Year 9, Our third year together! It continues to
be a privilege to watch you grow into the adults you
are.
What a memory this will all be when we leave and
think back to BIS Abu Dhabi. We have learnt so much
about ourselves and our community and the things
we can achieve when we pull together.
As we move to next year, never forget to keep
learning and looking for opportunities to challenge
yourselves and go beyond your comfort zones.
I hope for nothing but the best for each of you and
your families. See you next year, Mrs. Grange.
Well done 10B for completing another academic
year which by far has probably been one of the most
challenging. I can not put in words how proud I am of
you all, especially with the situation where you have
had to work at home. The quality of work and effort
from each and every one of you has been second to
none since the beginning of the year.
I feel lucky having so many students in my form who
brighten up my day and I am so proud to receive the
many positive emails from your subject teachers
regarding all the great work being completed by you all
and the kindness you show to your peers.
Keep this up 10B and I am sure you all will be more
Well done on completing this most unusual of academic
years - who would have guessed what dramatic changes
would be upon us so shortly after this class photo was
taken. Actually, virtual learning has given each of you a
great opportunity to become independent learners for an
extended period of time; and this experience should serve
you well in your further education - particularly when
you go to university. Have a great break, recharge your
batteries and be ready to go again in Year 11, when normal
service will resume - inshallah.
a unique energetic high-spirited atmosphere. Your
diverse personalities have meant that you have been
able to learn and grow from each other and each of
you have embraced this opportunity. Form times
openly and reflect on each other’s viewpoints during
discussions. All of you have demonstrated a mature
open-mindedness to each other during these times.
Your ability to work together, supporting one another
has created a thriving environment for all you to learn
in form time as well as in your lessons. I am impressed
by how effectively you have managed to engage with
Form class 12A, it has been an absolute pleasure being
your Form Tutor this year. Being a new teacher in a new
country however experienced you may be, is still a nerve
racking experience! But you made me feel welcome from
day one, and that I will be forever grateful for. It’s been
great seeing you grow, learn and mature into individuals
that I know your parents are very proud of. So it’s for me
to thank you. To you, young gents, keep wearing those
suits with pride and young ladies, continue to form those
bonds that I so admire from afar, during form time.
Very much looking forward to conversing with you all
kind, thoughtful, intelligent, funny individuals who we
Congratulations, you did it! You have been the most
amazing form group I have ever had the privilege of
working with.
Advice for those of you going to university next year:
1) Never buy anything from the campus bookshop... you
will find it cheaper online!
2) Say “yes” to everything in your first semester - it will help
you to make new friends.
3) Put effort into staying in touch with your friends and
family wherever you call ‘home’, they will always be there
for you.
Wishing you all the best for university and beyond. Keep
shining and keep us updated with all the fantastic things
you are destined to do.
Finally, try to be on time to your lectures next year!
MS. MOYLES
When I think of 13C, what comes to mind?
Too many things but namely: Missed deadlines! CAS,
EE, TOK,...each worthy of their own individual saga.
Clearing you out of the IB Academy because you were
late to a lesson.
Or maybe sending you there to do something
productive, having a coffee and a chat in the Hub,
celebrating that all important jump to the next grade
level, or consoling you on a disappointing result.
Hearing of extracurricular successes, reveling in your
exciting university offers and future plans, or simply
just having a chat and a quiz in 372 , while listening to
my fabulous taste in music; I don’t think my mornings
will ever be the same.
You each brought a smile to my face with your
anecdotes and jokes everyday and I will miss seeing
you.
Thank you 13C for the last two years I wish you all every
success in the future and hopefully our paths will cross
again in the years to come. Make good choices!!
value of a moment
until it becomes a
memory. - Dr. Seuss.
