“2020 has certainly been a historic year.
To quote Dickens “It was the best of
times, it was the worst of times.” We have
seen how fragile our existence is but on a
positive note we have been given a wake
up call on seeking better social equality,
taking better care of ourselves and our
planet. The impact of COVID 19 and the
climate emergency are now at the forefront
of our agenda and as we move forward
they will impact the way we live and
design spaces for what will become the new

A bespoke modernist house perched on the side of

At one of the first design meetings with the client he
mentioned his love of turn of the century design and
modernism. We decided early on to explore this idea
of simple raw materials, expressed in clean lines that
cut through the landscape and to locate walls in such
a way that allows the inside to blend with the outside.
The house should feel like an extension of the land
and vis-a-versa.

2Part of achieving thriving, resilient, sustainable cities is
ensuring that citizens can realise their potential, cope with
the normal stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully,
and make a contribution to their community. At COLE,
we are passionate about making liveable cities. We have a
background of assisting on urban design projects in London
and Phnom Penh. Recently, we have been looking at two
projects which focus on the future of urban design and how
wellness and community can be put at the forefront of the
design process. Both very different in size and context but
both sharing a common theme to create places that thrive,
are resilient and sustainable. We share our 4 considerations
when looking at how urban design can improve peoples
physical and mental wellbeing.
1. Access to safe well managed
green space
Research consistently finds links between urban
green spaces (vegetated land and water) and
mental health and wellbeing, even after adjusting
for socioeconomic variation.
2. Activity into peoples daily
routines
When designers and planners think about exercise,
there can be a tendency to consider it a physical
health intervention. However, activity is one of
the most important design opportunities for mental
health.
3.Creating pro-social places
There is extensive potential for designers to
innovate, creating features within projects that
facilitate positive, safe, natural interactions
amongst people and foster a sense of community,
integration and belonging.
4. Safety and security
Appropriate design of roads, good street lighting,
and distinct landmarks and way-finding cues are
just some of the design features that can increase
perceptions of safety in a neighbourhood.

DESIGN THE DIFFERENCE
PROJECTS
“COLE is an extraordinary architecture firm that takes various projects
whether it is profit or non-profit. By doing so, it allows me as an architect to
learn to be flexible, working with different clients with varied needs. Moreover,
I like how each designer including me is able to go through different processes
in order to express their inner talent such as in conceptual development process,
project management or detailing.
Growing up, I’ve always loved drawing and art. For me, architecture is one
of the ways we express arts through infrastructure and buildings. It functions
as one of the main elements of a city, a town or even a country; so, being a
creator of some of a places architecture is exciting and at the same time very
powerful.
The best thing that I’ve learned is to grow from what I’ve already had and
expand those ideas and have control over it. This lesson might not be a specific
skill but it gave me a principle to follow in every step of my design process.
I am currently working on a private residential project. The design focus
is on the engagement between building and its greenery surrounding.
I’m also involved with the next steps of Urban Village, which has
restaurants, retail areas and a school and I am very happy with the way
it is progressing.
As mentioned above, I always love to involve myself in any diversity of
the arts field as hobbies. I am a part-time Henna Artist and an Actor.
It is both profit and non- profit as I really enjoy doing it during my free
time.
Before joining COLE earlier in the year I oversaw the
construction of the 6 senses 5 star Koh Russie resort. I’ve 20
years of experience in supervision construction projects, incl.
various designers, coordination skills, a critical view, attention
to detail and the desire to develop myself.
I’m currently working on an office building refurbishment with
lots of issues with the existing structure but we are working
through them and approaching completion. I am also working
on another couple of office spaces. One for a bank marketing
company looking to break the mold of corporate office space
and the other is for a social enterprise whose workforce has
a range of disabilities so this has meant a focus on universal
design principles.

“COLE has a motivated team of talented young designers
and architects with different skill-sets and preferences in
architecture, a great friendly atmosphere. I love the fact
that we work out of an office in a historical building.
Architecture (considering masterplans as part of it)
defines our environment. The main parts of our lives we
do spend in this environment. Architecture has the task to
provide an environment that functions and keeps us safe
and healthy.
WHO
Rotanak
Senior Project Architect
I like big projects, Multi-storey buildings whether it is residential or
commercial, its one of the types that always captivates me. It is very
challenging and interesting to design such projects as it is like a stackup
of mixed use buildings or houses so it requires clever techniques to
be as economical as possible. Likewise, I always embrace greenery to
my design, hence adding it into a high-rise would satisfying to see the
balance between concrete and nature.
I think I’d like to work on more high-rise affordable residential buildings.
I’ve worked on this kind of project before and it comes with a very strict
client brief which is challenging. Yet, it’s enabled me to precisely think
of each step of the design development such as space usage and process
of finding environmental friendly materials.”
My hobbies are my dirt-bike, mountain bike, and kayak and
my other love (other than architectural projects) is cats.
I like existing building projects, as they have a history and
stories to tell and surprises to reveal.
My perfect project would allow me to coordinate all participants
from the very beginning. It would have a clear brief and
would comply with all formal requirements.”

MIXED USE
“Architecture is public space held by buildings”
Public space
Important on all our projects
We are serious when it comes to designing spaces for
people to enjoy. Be it offices, shops schools or homes, it is
important to us that people want to be there and to use the
spaces around them. Life is too short for badly designed
buildings or cities with non existent parks and a lack of
public space.
When we look at master planning or any building design
the first thing we consider is how people are going to use
the space? How can we encourage them to use it for other
things as well? and then; How do we enclose that space to
support those needs. A great example of this is our recent
commission to assist in the creation of the Friends Futures
Factory which started with us exploring the creation of
a town square and making the building as permeable as
possible...
Here are seven things we consider when creating public
spaces for all...
SUMMER 2020
1. Ensure all users have convenient and safe access to and
through public spaces
2. Include a diversity of activities in public spaces that
extend the hours of use.
3. Arrange the public space to allow direct, clear sight lines
from surrounding areas into and through the spaces.
4. Ensure safety and amenity in public spaces
5. Design for comfort; arrange paths, seating and main
areas to catch the sun in colder areas and be shaded in
hotter climates
6. Support a strong sense of place through local character
7. Find ways to support maintenance by users, establish
a program of ongoing events and activities for a wide
range of users
