First and foremost, I hope you, your
friends and your family have stayed
well during this fraught period. My
sincerest, heartfelt condolences go
out to anyone who has lost a loved
one during this time. Never has our
sense of civic duty felt stronger - we
all have a part to play in keeping
ourselves well, not just for our own
sakes, but to help halt the spread of
this horrible disease. So, face masks
at the ready, and hand santizer within
arm’s reach, let’s try and delve into
the new normal!
With all this considered, it is still very
heartening to see the early, tentative
steps back toward normality. Being a
small, family business ourselves, we
know just how much this period has
affected businesses up and down the
land - you may have even noticed
that we didn’t produce our usual
May/June issue. We are back, albeit
at a smaller size than usual, with lots
of content to help lift some of the
gloom and to give our treasured local
independents a platform to stand
up and say hello - please, as much
as possible, give them your support
- after all, money spent in local
independents is more likely to stay in
the community.
In this issue you’ll find the usual
dose of delicious recipes, home
and garden inspiration, advice from
industry experts and an insight into
what is going on locally. We fully
recommend reading with a cuppa -
or a large G&T in the sunshine.
Hopefully the whole gang, including
Editor Katie, will be back next edition
and usual programming will resume
- we will see you in September
when we will be looking at all things
schools, harvest time and hopefully
some travel ideas and what’s ons!
open and ready
to welcome you
National Garden Scheme has reopening of gardens in England to visitors
All funds raised will go to the charity’s Help Support Our Nurses campaign
The National Garden Scheme is delighted
to announce that its gardens in England are
reopening.
In order to comply with social distancing
and other Government guidelines, all
gardens will open in a system of prepurchased
tickets for a timed slot at the
visitor’s garden of choice. Tickets must be
purchased via the National Garden Scheme
website.
Numbers of visitors per timed slot will vary
from garden to garden, depending on size.
These and all other relevant details can be
found at a garden’s entry on the website.
Gardens will not offer teas or other
refreshments, at some gardens where there
is sufficient space, people will be allowed to
bring their own picnics.
All buildings will be closed and access to
toilets will only be provided in an emergency
and so long as it does not involve access
to a house.
George Plumptre, Chief Executive of the
National Garden Scheme comments,
“We are delighted that we are able to
open the gates of some of our gardens
in England and welcome people. Right
now our gardens are blossoming into their
midsummer glories and so it is wonderful
that our garden owners can share them with
visitors.
“For the current period the opening system
we are having to operate is quite different
from a normal open day when people just
arrive and pay at the gate. At the moment
entry is only by pre-purchased ticket
and not all the gardens are able to open,
so visitors need to check details on our
website www.ngs.org.uk
“While our gardens have all been closed
we have run a very successful campaign,
Help Support Our Nurses, drawing attention
to the amazing work on the frontline of
the Coronavirus crisis being done by the
nursing charities we support. One hundred
per cent of funds raised at gardens during
the rest of 2020 will go to the Help Support
Our Nurses campaign.”
About the National Garden Scheme
Founded in 1927 to raise funds for
community nurses the National Garden
Scheme has given away over £60million
to nursing and health charities and is
the largest single funder for many of its
beneficiaries. The money is raised through
the opening of exceptional gardens across
England and Wales. In 2019 the gardens
raised £4 million. In 2020, 3,700 gardens
were scheduled to open, but the current
lockdown means that their gates have
been closed for the first time in the charity’s
history.
Queen’s Nurse Quote:
“I love the National Garden Scheme which
has been the most brilliant supporter of
Queen’s Nurses like me. It was founded by
the Queen’s Nursing Institute which makes
me very proud. As we battle Coronavirus on
the front line in the community, knowing we
have their support is a real comfort.”
Boarding schools offer unrivalled
opportunities for learning
State and independent schools understand
that a good education is a powerful tool
and all educators need to encourage a
passion for learning. We all undertake to
join the dots together to give our pupils the
best chance but if all schools are ultimately
striving for the same outcome, does a full
boarding school environment have the
edge?
Boarding schools have time to prepare a
young mind, academically and pastorally.
Longer days and weekends provide the
opportunity for a whole host of extra
experiences and support, leading to a wellrounded
individual.
Encouragement and facilitation begin in
the House environment. At Sherborne
the first wave of support comes from the
House Team led by the Housemaster.
Tutors have time with their tutees
discussing academic progress and pastoral
concerns, each week. This regular contact
and rounded view of each boy builds a
strong relationship to ensure all pupils are
motivated and engaged.
Matrons play an integral part within
boarding schools. Any misconceptions
by Sherborne boys that matrons will tidy
their rooms are quickly dispelled and
self-sufficiency, an important life skill, is
developed! Our matrons are held close
to the hearts of the boys and it is a very
special relationship where these key
stalwarts of the School have the medical,
emotional and organisational needs of the
boys at the forefront of their minds.
Academic progress is important. The nature
of full boarding brings a longer school day
and departments are open beyond the
working day. Boys can access support but
there are also opportunities for enrichment
with boarding schools offering an unrivalled
range of co-curricular clubs supplementing
the more traditional activities. Maybe full
boarding offers ‘an educational experience
with no limits’.
The most recent example at Sherborne
is a Calligraphy club run by new Head of
Computer Science Dr Wild alongside some
popular long-standing clubs including Fives,
Fly Fishing, Sailing and Debating! Boys also
enjoy a close relationship with Sherborne
Girls with whom joint activities, subjects and
social opportunities are well established.
Boarding schools offer the chance to
separate home life in the boarding house
from study time. Our newly refurbished
School Library offers a wonderful setting
and with notable alumni including Alan
Turing, Hugh Bonneville, Chris Martin and
Jeremy Irons there is a distinct sense of
purpose at the School. The friendly team of
library staff is on hand to help with research
and study skills and boys (and staff) are
often found having a little bit of quiet time.
Integral values at Sherborne encourage
boys to be respectful, confident,
passionate, independent and curious, while
PSHE and School Assemblies promote
a culture of kindness and compassion.
Mentors, predominately Sixth Form, offer
an alternative listening service or extra
academic support. This in turn strengthens
the community in House and takes the
‘Sherborne Spirit’ into life beyond the
School.
So do boarding schools have the edge over
their day counterparts? Well, all schools
work incredibly hard to support their pupils
academically and pastorally, teachers
are passionate about their subjects
and institutions aspire to prepare pupils
effectively for ‘the world beyond’.
We believe full boarding at Sherborne
works, providing an outstanding
educational experience for our boys. And
we hope that when boys leave Sherborne,
Great Ballard Launches
a Senior School
ADVERTISING FEATURE
11-16 education re-imagined…
In traditional secondary education, pupils progress from Years 7 to
Year 8 to Year 9 and then have two years of GCSE courses. Years 7,
8 and 9 can lack both a focus and a goal. Great Ballard’s new senior
school will feel very different to that of a standard secondary school
and here’s why...
The PSB provides an exciting 2 year course for Years 7 and 8,
certificating not just main subjects but also art, drama, sport and
personal characteristics such as leadership and resilience. They will
have 3 year senior school (Years 9-11) and their first Year 9 cohort
will start in September 2021, with Year 10 following in 2022 and Year
11 in 2023.
Year 9 will be a purposeful year as pupils will begin preparation for
their GCSEs having chosen their GCSE options at the end of Year
8 as part of their PSB graduation programme. This will mean that
pupils avoid choosing their options mid-way through Year 9, then
having to continue with subjects that they have dropped at GCSE for
additional term and a half.
Pupils will remain engaged over the full 5 years. In Year 7 and 8 their
work is continuously assessed to provide a certificate at the end of
Year 8. The focus then switches to preparation for GCSEs over three
years allowing enough time for the demanding new syllabuses. This
will mean that every secondary year contributes towards educational
qualifications.
Additional benefits include:
• Great Ballard School prides itself on preparing children both
academically and emotionally and this will continue throughout
the senior school. Great Ballard has a passionate focus on
wellbeing, with pupils from Reception to Year 8 following our
iSpace and iWonder wellbeing programmes. This current
wellness programme will be developed and continued,
covering age appropriate topics in order to produce well
balanced individuals who are emotionally prepared to go
out into the world at age 16. In addition to this, they hope
to maintain a programme of fixtures in their current sports
whilst providing a personal fitness plan, designed in an age
appropriate manner to support physical wellness.
• They aim for all pupils to finish both Bronze and Silver Duke
of Edinburgh awards by the end of Year 11. This programme
offers personal development, increasing skills whilst
developing each pupil as a future citizen, volunteering within
the community. This will be a natural progression from our
Forest School and outdoor learning programmes within the
Prep school.
• Pupils who may have previously left Great Ballard at the end
of Year 8 will not have to adjust to a new school with different
teachers, different rules and expectations and different
infrastructure just before their GCSEs.
Postcards
FROM PORTUGAL
Travel expert Pippa O’Keefe gives us her insights into
travelling to Portugal post-lockdown and the many
wonders it holds for every kind of traveller....
There is life after lockdown!
Especially in the Mediterranean,
well Portugal to be more precise.
The Portuguese have eased their
way out of confinamento and are
enjoying the country’s beaches
and local eateries again. The only
thing a miss is the tourism they
so heavily rely on.
I’ve always thought of Portugal as that
undiscovered restaurant that you are
hesitant to share with others incase
it balloons in popularity. Personal
feelings aside, my Portuguese
counterparts are eager to show how
impressively unscathed from COVID
they are and encourage us to take the
plunge to and visit.
Restaurants, cafés, beaches, hotels and
villas are back in business and it feels
great. They are proudly displaying the
Clean & Safe seal created by the Tourism
board to signify all necessary health
regulations have been complied with.
Having spent the best part of a month
eating my way through formerly closed
for business hot spots (for research
purposes of course) it has all felt
surprisingly “normal”, restaurants are
more diligent with their hygiene and you
must wear a mask if you go inside any
premise, but the wine still tastes the
same and the occasional beachside view
harks you back to freer (pre-covid) times.
Lately, it seems there is an air of
nervousness about travelling anywhere,
UK included. Portugal have opened their
borders to holiday makers and even
though there’s talks of ‘air bridges’,
people are still undecided as to whether
to travel to the region or not. So to
perhaps tempt you, here are some
reasons to visit:
My dad always used to make a joke
about the Daila Lama ordering a pizza
and it being one with everything. I feel
the same about Portugal being a multi
faceted holiday destination; you have
a draw dropping coastline as well as
plenty of fly and flop beaches, bustling
markets, vineyards galore, buzzing
cities, UNESCO world heritage sites,
culture, national parks, mountains,
countryside, variety of cuisine, lakes,
rivers and much much more.
PRAIAS
Beaches
Having travelled a fair bit with my job
over the years, I’m hard pushed to find
beaches I adore more than in Portugal,
from the east of the Algarve where
you’ll find gentle seas and remote little
islands to the more rugged landscapes
of the West. If you travel north up the
coast past beaches such as Odeceixe,
a turquoise swirl of river running through
it, you’ll reach the undisturbed white
sands of Comporta, where horse riding
is encouraged and great beachside
restaurants are plentiful. For surfers
however, you’ll be wanting to head north
of Lisbon to places like Santa Cruz and
Nazare - where an impressive coastline
frames local towns.
LUXO BARATO
Affordable Luxury
Portugal as well as being authentic and
relatively untouristed, has a cheaper
price tag than other European countries,
and whilst it may not have the finesse
of say Italy or Greece, they more than
www.chichesterlifestyle.co.uk | 13

compensate for their shortfalls through
culture and charm. You will be hard
pressed to find many starbucks or
big chain restaurants. Luxury hotels
are sensibly priced with many off the
beaten track gems being an absolute
steal - even in the summer months! This
goes for the food and wine too, and I’m
talking about the Michelin star suspects.
CULTURA
Culture
Embrace Portuguese culture;
• Find a fado bar order a glass of port or
bica pingado (strong coffee) and listen,
along with locals, to a singer performing
traditional songs.
• Explore the beauty that lies within their
many churches and monasteries from the
whitewashed churches of the south to
Sao Francisco in Porto, where more than
450lb of gold encrusts the interior.
• Admire picture-perfect tiles or azulejos
as the locals call them, which seem
to flood many an instagram feed of
any visitor to the country. In the south
the colours are more warm reds, blue
and white throughout the country and
yellows, greens and blues in the Alentejo
countryside region.
• ARTisans, they live off the land and use
materials such as cork to make anything
from furniture to jewelry.
• Cities; Porto is brimming with soul, oldworld
charm and gorgeous architecture
(JK Rowling spent some time here
sponging up some inspiration). Lisbon
with its yellow trams, steep hills and
buzzing nightlife.
• Festivals, they love a party! They are
also a very proud country, and even this
year for Dia do Portugal in June, they still
lined the streets with bright decorations
and feasting stands.
• Football, their life blood. It’s a slim
chance to find a public establishment that
does not have a TV on showing football.
VINHO
Wine
The wine is unapologetically fabulous.
Anyone who has been to Portugal knows
(or will soon learn) about the wonder
of the Portuguese grape. With a good
year-round climate and the influence
of the Atlantic, the country is known
to produce some of the best wines on
the planet, and with them keeping a
lot of its produce to themselves (unlike
many others), you can be guaranteed its
extensive quality and affordability.
Each region of Portugal has its own
distinct climate; the cooler temperatures
and Atlantic breeze make the far north
of Portugal (north of Porto/Braga region)
ideal for producing the very popular ‘Vinho
Verde’, whereas the daytime heat and cool
nighttime temperatures in the middle of the
countryside, as you head further south into
the Alentejo wine region, are perfect for
ripening the grapes for a beautifully smooth
red (otherwise known as ‘Vinho Tinto’).
COMIDA
Food
Much like the wines, Portuguese olive oil
is one of the country’s best-kept secrets,
but once tasted it is never forgotten. I love
some freshly baked pão caseiro with oil, a
staple at most restaurants throughout the
country, and if it’s on the menu order some
Serra da Estrela cheese.
The Portuguese food scene has often
been overlooked, however the country’s
young chefs are bringing delicious twists
to traditional dishes like cod and grilled
sardines infused with locally foraged
herbs and spices. A handful of the most
successful big names such as Rui Paula
and Jose Avillez have set the bar high
for the others. Notable spots include Rui
Paula’s DOP in Porto and DOC which
sits on the River Douro. Belcanto and
Cantinho do Avillez, all owned by Jose
Avillez should be on your list of places to
try in Lisbon.
When in the Algarve many like to flock to
notorious beach spots such as Maria’s
and 2Passos for their fresh fish and
chilled rose, be sure to book however,
especially in the summer!
As a bonafide foodie I tend to veer off
the tourist path to local places with daily
changing menus and opportunities to
14 | www.chichesterlifestyle.co.uk

practice my broken Portuguese. My clients will always
be given a full list of my regional favourites to dine at and
dishes (for example the Francesainha in Porto - essentially
a croque monsieur on steroids).
PASTEIS DE NATA
Portuguese custard tarts
These deserve their own section - they are Portuguese
happiness in its purest form. Sometimes, when in
Lisbon, I will amend a route just so I can head to Pasteis
de Belem, where the recipe originated in 1837, brought,
some say, through a secret underground corridor by
monks in the kitchen of the magnificent, neighbouring
Monastery of Jeronimos.
DORMIR
Sleep
An activity I’m not entirely convinced the Portuguese
do (which may have something to do with their
Schwarzenegger strength coffee), yet their country is full
of enticing places to lay your head at night. The hotel
scene in the 90s was either rustic bed and breakfasts
or big hotel chains, now we’ve seen a rise in unique
boutiques.
I don’t shy away from bigger hotel groups; in fact there is
the gorgeous Six Senses in the Douro Valley (pictured top
right) that is much like others in the group, spa centric and
a real hub of wellbeing. The location lends itself perfectly
to the nature of the brand and it’s top of my list for some
high end R&R in Portugal.
Most recently I’ve discovered boutique hotel Palacio
Principe Real in Lisbon, a city in need of what Gail (the
owner) has brought to it. It has all the bells and whistles of
a five star hotel yet without the stuffiness, the ethos here
is enjoy the place as if it were your own. The interiors are
timeless and classy, no corners have been cut here - your
bedroom even comes with a SMEG fridge filled with little
treats. Plus any hotel with freestanding bathtubs in their
rooms wins my vote.
Outside the cities you have places like their countryside
and wine region Alentejo, which is populated with
relatively unheard of boutique hotels such as a firm
favourite of mine - Herdade Malhadinha Nova. Owned
and run by the Soares wine family you essentially feel
like one of their amigos when you go to stay. A few of
their bottles have labels designed by their grandchildren,
which like the rest of the estate gives a real personal
experience.
If you were to do a road trip, which I thoroughly
recommend you could twin the above mentioned with
a visit to Fazenda Nova Country House in the Algarve.
Another, best kept secret, type place. The owner’s taste
can be seen in the architecture of the former farmhouse,
eclectic artwork and vinyl library. You are also in close
proximity to the gorgeous fishing town of Olhão where
you wander the cobbled streets in the evening and get
speedboats over to deserted islands during the day.
I could wax lyrical all day long about the accommodation
in Portugal, or just the country in general, so please do
get in touch with me if you want to know more.
Alas there you have it, Portugal, travel now to
experience it in all its glory...
PAPPARDELLE
FLORAL
PASTA
by Alpha Foodie
Add a touch of something special
to your mid-week menu with Alpha
Foodie's homemade Pappardelle
floral pasta and basil pesto. The
special floral, herby twist not only
looks gorgeous but tastes it too! This
pasta dough recipe is 100g '00' grade
pasta flour and 1 egg per person, so
is easy to adjust for more servings.
Serves: 3
INGREDIENTS
For the pasta:
300g (2.5 cups) ’00’ grade pasta flour
3 Leghorn White eggs
A selection of your favourite fresh
herbs (we use thyme and sage)
A selection of edible flowers
For the basil pesto:
1-2 garlic cloves
2 tbsp pine nuts
2 tbsp olive oil
A bunch of Greek basil
Pinch of salt and black pepper
METHOD
To begin making the homemade
pappardelle, start by placing the flour
on a board or in a bowl.
Make a well in the middle and add the
eggs. Beat the eggs with a fork and
then start incorporating the flour until
you obtain a thoroughly combined
mixture.
Knead the dough with your hands,
shaping, pulling, stretching (alternatively
you can use a mixer with a dough
hook). Knead it until the dough is
smooth and elastic. If it sticks to your
hand when touched then add a little
more flour and knead till smooth. You
can also help yourself with a rolling pin,
rolling and folding and rolling again. The
process takes a while so be patient!
It’s a necessary step so that the pasta
becomes smooth and silky, not lumpy
and dry.
Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough
till it is flat enough to feed into a pasta
machine on level ‘0’. Continue feeding it
through ‘0’, folding it in half then feeding
it through repeatedly until a regular
shape. Make sure to sprinkle lightly with
flour to stop it from sticking. Then you
can make it thinner with the machine.
When you have a thin long sheet of
pasta dough, stretch it on your work
plane and arrange your fresh herbs and
flowers on it. Then carefully lay another
sheet on top. With the help of a rolling
pin, carefully roll over so that the two
sheets of dough get stuck together.
OR
If you use a rolling pin for the whole
process, make sure to roll it out and
stretch it into thin sheets. Make sure to
have 2 (or an even number of) sheets
with a relatively similar size. Or you can
cut a long one into 2, as you will need to
layer one on top of the other.
Cut the pasta. I chose to cut it into long
strips, like Tagliatelle or Pappardelle, but
you can cut it in different shapes/sizes.
To cut it into long strips, you just need
to fold the pasta a couple of times and
then just cut with a knife.
To prepare the basil pesto, just mix/
blend together all the pesto ingredients.
It’s as simple as that!
To cook the pasta, put it in boiling water
and cook for 3 minutes, combine with
the basil pesto and serve immediately.
RICOTTA,
SPINACH AND
PECORINO
GNOCCHI
by Nicola Millbank
Gnocchi is surprisingly easy to make
and comes together quickly, especially
with this super easy sauce. Serves: 2
INGREDIENTS
For the gnocchi:
300g baby spinach, wilted in a pan and
finely chopped
350g good quality fresh ricotta
150g plain flour
3 Clarence Court Old Cotswold Legbar
eggs
80g grated pecorino
For the sauce:
50g salted butter
50g frozen peas, thawed
A handful of fresh pea shoots
Freshly cracked pepper
METHOD
Place the spinach, ricotta, flour, eggs
and pecorino in a large bowl. Mix until
combined and a sticky dough forms. On
a well-floured surface, roll the gnocchi
into a long sausage and using a knife
cut into 2cm pieces. Press your knuckle
into the centre of each piece to create
a dimple.
Drop the gnocchi into a pan of salted
boiling water and cook for 2-3 minutes
or until they’ve risen to the surface.
Meanwhile, in a frying pan, melt the
butter until it starts to foam and add
the peas. When the gnocchi is cooked,
using a slotted spoon, drain them
from the water and into the frying pan,
swirling the pan as you do. The small
amount of residual starchy water will
emulsify with the butter to create a silky
sauce.
Spoon on the plate, top with fresh pea
shoots and a sprinkle of black pepper.
TILES
FLOOR TILES
BEST FOR: Kitchens and
bathrooms - especially if walls also
need covering.
A GOOD CHOICE IF: You
like stylish finishes and the lowmaintenance
quality of tiles. They
also conduct heat well for underfloor
heating.
TAKE TO THE
FLOOR
Time to refresh the flooring in your home?
We look at four popular materials and
which areas they work best for...
WOODEN FLOORING
BEST FOR: Living spaces like sitting rooms and studies.
TIPS & TRICKS: There are so
many finishes available - the trend for
patterns isn’t abating - we love the
Boreal Mix Wood-Effect Tiles, above right, and the Grande
Saltram on the kitchen floor, left, both Original Style.
TIPS & TRICKS: Take
time to consider if you
want hardwood floors or
engineered wood flooring.
Engineered wood flooring
tends to work better in
moist-prone areas, as
their base flexes less. Well
maintained solid wood
floors will last for decades
and can be re-sanded
multiple times.
WOOD
A GOOD CHOICE IF: You are looking for a classic
option which adds longterm value to your home. You do
have to be mindful of which rooms you choose to use it in.
Both options provide lots of
benefits and many colour
and pattern choices, so it’s
worth doing your research.
Image from flooringvillage.co.uk
LUXURY VINYL TILES
BEST FOR: These work
anywhere in the home, but
particularly well in kitchens and
bathrooms or high traffic areas.
They are easy to maintain.
A GOOD CHOICE IF:
You want a hard-wearing, low
maintenance floor with an
enormous range of patterns
and finishes. We love the new
heritage-style collections from
Karndean and Amtico plus their
wood and stone effect tiles are
very realistic.
Karndean
LVT
TIPS & TRICKS: You can
use these anywhere and the
way you lay them can create
some great personal style.
Amtico
CARPETS
BEST FOR: Bedrooms and some living rooms
- nothing replicates the cosiness of a carpet. Also
good for noise reduction.
A GOOD CHOICE IF: You have small children
- stain resistant blends are available. There is a
huge choice when you buy carpets - the colours
can really complement a scheme and the soft feel
instantly warms up a room and provides thermal
insulation - perfect for any property.
TIPS & TRICKS: In
high traffic areas choose
hardwearing finishes like the
stylish 100% wool Berber
collection from Kingsmead
Carpets.
Kingsmead Carpets
Kingsmead Carpets -
Berber Traditions
Luxury Vinyl Tiles are not
known for their environmental
credentials (other than their
long-lasting finish) so we were
excited to hear about Amtico’s
new Cirro range which is
PVC free. At the moment it’s
a commercial product, but
it’s good to see the industry
REFRESH your walls with some new
prints. Never underestimate the transformative
power of art! Get some favourite posters,
postcards or even fabrics framed or invest in
some new, fun eye candy for the walls - it’s cheap
but effective!
We love Desenio’s vast range of posters, with
options for framed, unframed and mounted
RENOVATE by bringing
the outside in. Try to create connected
spaces, either by echoing flooring
choices in the home and the patio, or
using complementary furniture styles
as you’ll see in the home.
Some experts estimate that bi-folding
doors can add around 5-10% to the
resale valuation of a property, so
if you’re thinking about renovation
changes, glazing is a good investment
which will also improve the way you
use the space in the interim. Metal
Crittall doors also make a fabulous
statement when paired with other
black glazing and fixtures.
NOTES FROM THE GARDEN
DISCOVERING THE JOY OF nature
Expert plantsman and radio
presenter Matt Biggs recommends that
we should use the past few months,
having been in lockdown, and take
note of the beauty of nature.
For those of us lucky enough to have a
garden or outdoor space, during this time we
have probably spent more hours outside than
at any other time.
Whether enjoying a morning coffee to the
sound of the local blackbird, building a den
with the kids or growing some veggies we
have certainly got to know our outdoor
space - and appreciate not only the physical
benefits but the mental benefits that it offers
too. A walk around the local area for our daily
exercise is also a really good insight into what
gardens can offer and we notice the small
changes that occur so much more when we
are not in a car or rushing around.
With the strict lockdown days hopefully
behind us it may now be time to consider
how we have used our outdoor spaces, what
worked, what didn’t and what we would like
to change going forward. Taking time to plan
that now, while it is still fresh in our minds, is
the best possible positive thing to do - a chat
with your local nursery or garden centre is a
great starter, they have so much expertise
and are always so happy to share it. It is also
a great time to plant vegetables as well as
sowing some fast-growing herbs.
Additionally, you may find that a local
(registered) landscaper might be needed for
some more fundamental changes so give
them a call too to get the ball rolling.
The quieter streets and lack of traffic noise
have also allowed us to enjoy birdsong and
although I can tell the song of a blackbird
from that of a robin I have been delighted at
all of the other
bird song I am
hearing - and
it is a great
way for a bit
of homeschooling
too. Get the
children to identify what they hear and you
can learn together - the RSPB website
will be a great help! There are various ways to
continue to enjoy the wildlife in your gardens,
nest boxes, feeding stations and bug hotels
are a real boon and with a bit of creativity
don’t have to cost a fortune either, so
however you have enjoyed the outdoors this
spring, let’s make sure that it continues to be
a part of all of our lives going forward.
stunning collection of gardens...
Waterperry Gardens is a magical place where you are surrounded
Home to the renowned horticultural college between 1932
spectacular ornamental gardens.
Over the past twenty years though the gardens have developed
and grown, and many new projects have been undertaken and
completed.
You’ll now find a Formal Garden, the Mary Rose Garden, a
Waterlily Canal and the Long Colour Border, and recently a small
arboretum was planted in the meadow area beyond the canal.
get to grip with your
finances
Money guru Martin Lewis has some great advice to keep your bank
balance in check
Take my direct debit challenge - can you
save £100s in just 5 minutes?
Today, I’m laying down the gauntlet. I want
to find out how many of you are wasting
cash - letting money drip from your bank
accounts without knowing, for regular
payments to services and companies you
no longer use or need. It shouldn’t take
long and it can be extremely lucrative.
To enthuse you before we begin, here’s
a couple of the hundreds of tweets I got
after talking about it on This Morning a
few days ago… Louise tweeted “Literally
a 5 minute check on my online banking
and found a phone bill I was paying
for a phone I don’t own anymore and
a subscription that I don’t even think I
receive any more! Just been able to cut
out about £100 a month! Thank you,
Martin!” and Rob “CV maker software
£14.99 a month? I did one edit to a cv and
haven’t been back on the site since. That
was 6 months ago. They never even told
me they were charging me”
Equally if you follow this and save, do let
me know by tweeting @martinslewis.
There are three types of regular payments
Most of you will be familiar with two of
them, but the third type is the tricky one.
- Direct debits. Typical use: Energy &
utilities. You give a firm your bank details
and permission to debit your account
when necessary, and it decides what to
take and when, yet you’ve a right to ask
the bank to stop it - but do check you’re
out of contract first.
- Standing orders. Typical use: Regular
payments to people. Here you set up an
automated instruction to pay a firm or
person a fixed amount, and you set the
frequency. Cancelling is easy via your
bank.
- Recurring payments. Typical use:
Subscriptions, payday loans, or
pornography sites. These used to be
known as continuous payment authorities
- where you give a debit or credit card
26 | www.chichesterlifestyle.co.uk
number and the firm can take payment
when it feels fit. Yet they look just like
single transactions so they’re tougher to
spot.
It’s generally easier to cancel these via
firms themselves, but sometimes they play
hardball - since 2009 you’ve had a right to
cancel with the bank, though some staff
wrongly say you can’t.
How to find regular payments.
Both standing orders and direct debits are
easy to locate. If you bank online there’s
usually a page that lists them, so it’s
easy to check (best to do it that way so it
includes currently paused subscriptions as
well). If not, you can request it.
Recurring payments are primarily just
about going through statements to check.
There are some apps like smart-bill.co.uk
and yolt.com which can help via the open
banking tool. If you find firms you’ve not
heard of, try Google or your bank.
Don’t be suckered in to keep payments
you don’t actually want.
I’ve written before about my Money
Mantras for shopping – for the skint, “Do I
need it? Can I afford it? Have I checked if
it’s cheaper elsewhere?” or the not skint,
“Will I use it? Is it worth it? Have I checked
if it’s cheaper elsewhere?” Answer “no”
and you shouldn’t buy. Yet we need to
apply similar logic to regular payments
too. Yet often we just leave the money
flowing out of our accounts unconsidered.
Even then, many people may find it
hard to decide which payment to keep
and which to cut. And especially with
subscription services, they know there’s a
powerful psychology here.
Companies use what I call the ‘inertia
dividend’. It’s no coincidence many
subscription firms are successful. We,
humans, are naturally pre-disposed to
not liking to lose something that we
have. Many people wouldn’t sign up for a
movie service that they don’t really need
if they had to pay for it, but would for a
free month’s trial. They go in with a view
to cancelling it when it ends, but at that
point they become accustomed to it and
now getting rid of it means a loss - and we
don’t like loss.
The lust for such things doesn’t bounce
back like elastic. We tend to feel the loss
of a service far more potently than the joy
at its gain in the first place. So, be brutal
with yourself, especially at a time like now.
Deciding what to keep and what to loose
It’s often a fight between logic and instinct.
Here’s a few points to help:
1. The obvious ditch - where you’re paying
for something pointless. A cameraman
on one of my shows once admitted to
me: “I found I pay £1,000s in council tax
on my OLD home”. Others find they pay
insurance for old long forgotten mobiles.
If this happens always try and see if you
can get the money back (you don’t always
have a right to it though).
2. Things you don’t need but do want, ask
is it worth it? There are some things you
want, but don’t need, then the question
is, is the gain you get worth the money?
Think in annual cost, £8/mth is £100/yr
- so if it’s a TV subscription you only use
a few times, is it worth it? If not, cancel
or try and find something cheaper. As Jo
said: “Sorted my bills in Jan and cancelled
the gym (went twice in 2019), saving £300/
year.”
3. Things you definitely need - can you do
it cheaper and get the same. Check if it’s a
good price online or via comparison sites
and consider haggling. If it’s not good
value use it as a spur to switch whether
it’s energy bills, broadband, water bills or
more look, at what you can do to save.
Is now the time to think about investing –
especially if you’re a woman?
Highly volatile global markets, unprecedented monetary and
fiscal support from governments, and businesses doing what
they can to stay afloat; no one could have predicted the situation
we’re in today six months ago.
For investors, times like this can be unsettling. But crises like
these do happen – think of the financial crisis in 2008 or the dotcom
bubble. Markets recover over time and they do get back to
normal. It’s why investing is always a long-term commitment and
about riding the ups and downs.
Towards the end of last year, we ran a survey* with YouGov
which showed almost a quarter (24%) of high net worth (HNW)
women had no investment portfolio. The same percentage of
HNW women had no pension. For us these stats were alarming,
and particularly when compared to men (only 14% of HNW men
were without an investment portfolio and 18% had no pension).
It means a significant portion of women (and some men) with
money to invest are missing out on the opportunity to protect and
grow their wealth. Held in cash their money will only erode over
time due to rock bottom interest rates and inflation.
As we experience the COVID-19 crisis and wait to see the full
extent of the economic impact, it’s no surprise people might put
off investing. However, it’s vitally important that those who can
invest don’t dismiss the option as they will inevitably lose out in
the long term.
Importantly, it’s also about investors holding their nerve
through times like these as, even missing just a few days in any
equity market can limit returns. For example, if you’d invested
US$10,000 in the US equity market (S&P 500 Index) from 1980 to
the end of 2019, it would be worth c.US$660,000. If you’d missed
just five of the best trading days during that 40+ year period,
the value of your portfolio would be down by around 35% with a
value of US$427,000; if you’d missed 10 of the best trading days
during this period, the value of your portfolio would be around
US$318,000.
Of course, there is risk involved in investing which these unusual
times have highlighted, so it’s important to seek professional
advice, and a wealth manager will help you take the right level
of risk for your overall circumstances. They will also help you
to spread investment risk through the diversification of your
investments.
When something like this happens, the headlines can be scary,
but it can also be the best time to reflect on your plans for the
future. Going through a crisis like this brings important things into
perspective and a new financial plan might be just the way to
help you achieve the future you want.
To find out more about investing or to speak to a Wealth
Adviser, get in touch: worcester@canaccord.com or
01905 953623.
*All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was
1,012 high net worth individuals. Fieldwork was undertaken between 11 - 24
October 2019. The survey was carried out online.
Investment involves risk. The value of investments and the income from them can
go down as well as up and you may not get back the amount originally invested.
Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.
Visiting a
care home;
ADVERTISING FEATURE
the a-z
of top
tips
Dementia expert Professor June Andrews
gives us her insightful tips into visiting a
loved one in residential or nursing care...
When someone with dementia moves into
a care home, it is often a great relief for
the family. Many things are immediately
better. You can get an undisturbed night’s
sleep and it’s possible to go out and about
without worrying how your loved one is, and
whether they are safe. But it is not always
so simple. You might worry about whether
the new resident is being looked after
properly, or whether they are fretting and
missing you.
Visiting now becomes an important issue.
How often should you go and for how long,
and what on earth do you do when you are
there? Because people ask me this, I made
an A-Z of visiting ideas an important part
of my new book on care home. Especially
as you know the person you are visiting, I
expect you will be able to think of variations
on this theme.
AAvoid contradicting someone with
dementia, even for clarification.
Bring the newspaper or photos to look at.
Calmly sit and wait. Just being there is
good in itself.
Don’t be louder than needed.
Even if you are in a hurry, don’t appear to
rush.
Find conversation-starters apart from ‘Do
you remember when … ?’ Direct questions
are like a memory test, and uncomfortable.
Give a hug (with permission) or find
appropriate contact like a hand massage.
Have food to share, or go for a
cuppa.
Introduce yourself again every time, even if
you are sure they know you.
Just wait after speaking. To give extra time
for a response, count to ten.
Keep an eye out for tiredness, and offer
sips of water.
Limit the numbers visiting at any one time.
Make an attempt to get outside, if only on a
roof terrace or balcony.
Never forget that the person can read your
body language.
Offer to bring your dog or other pet,
especially if it is calm and affectionate.
Pick their best time of day.
Quick visits are acceptable - what matters
is the quality.
Read out loud.
Sing together.
Try to be in a quiet room.
Understand, if they are rude, that this is not
personal.
Visiting cards or notes let others know that
you called and are good for reminding the
resident that they are loved and respected.
When it is time to go, find a distraction to
cover your departure.
XXX is for kissing - only do it if you used to
do it before.
Young visitors are always popular, and
babies are amazing.
ZZZ is for when they sleep through your
visit; you were there - that matters - so leave
a card. Use the time to relax yourself or talk
to someone else who is lonely.
Z
If just visiting the care home starts to be
hard work for the family, neighbours and
friends can help. It might be hard to make
sure someone is there every day, and you
can work together to fill the gaps. Have fun!
How to Choose a Care Home will be
old peoples home”; but knowing in my heart and head that this was
the safety very best steps decision ahead I could make. of What COVID-19 was so heartbreaking and the was
the team role reversal are of looking taking and accepting forward the responsibility to welcoming of making
such a life changing choice on behalf of a loved one, and it was the
hardest families decision and I had visitors ever had make. again soon!
Finding the type of care available within the many different homes
is Woodlands daunting in took itself. the Do precaution I want a new of locking large modern down home a couple with of all
the weeks “facilities” before bright the general walls, all public. new staff.. This was or do done I want with the complete home
that cooperation offers the from nearest families possible and staff. likeness The team to a home? had PPE With all in
familiar place ready staff, for many use who and protection have been procedures at the same in home place. for This years
and protected years with their the residents maximum and experience staff. Activities and became ongoing even training
within more important, that same both home one with to a one Manager and on who the entertainment
is daily contact
with side! every (the Karaoke residents was and a staff? particular hit!).
Do Woodlands I want to see is a every small, certificate specialist for care every home, course with and staff pictures who of
member have been of staff highly because trained there and are so qualified, many, or to do care I want for people to be
greeted with Alzheimer’s by the same disease team and/or week Dementia. in week out? Many These have same been
staff caring knowing for its residence my loved for one ten not years only or during more. the This day advantage but also at
night, means when that continuity they are alone and experience, and feeling are lost? highly Knowing valued - without
referring qualities, to that records have certainly - that it’s been Horlicks put to and the not test chocolate in the last that few
